Dark Shadow and Ripple of Light; Ball Lightning or My own Ghost Tale?

Last night sitting on the couch with my wife we experienced something very strange. I'll tell you what happened, you try to explain it, no attacking the messenger please.

It was the time of the evening not quite dark out but getting dimmer (twilight), about a half hour before the actual darkness of night. We keep our shades pulled all the way down for privacy in our urban single-family house setting. We had just gotten through eating dinner in front of the TV watching SCI-Fi channel’s Enterprise on VHS tape and were just a couple minutes into the “Dresden Files” TV program.

My wife and I continued our commercial break conversation; she was telling me about her second day of work after being unemployed for over a year. She is making a little less than before, but something is better than nothing. Anyway, it was approaching 7:00 PM (twilight) and I’m looking for a pause in her talking (all the married guys know what I’m talking about) so I could grab the remote and the TV guide. Suddenly but very subtlety she pauses, kind of looking over my shoulder like she sees something. I notice out of the corner of my eye a shadow moving high on the wall across the room, which is what she later told me she also saw. Just as I’m thinking how odd it is a shadow is moving counterclockwise IN the room, the dark turns to light and becomes a flash, a ripple of light so intense be both froze and jumped at the same time and then looked at each other in disbelief.

What was that, she said? You saw it too, I said to her?

She got up and went to the door pulling up the shade on the door as she said it might have been the front porch light going out. No the light is still on, it did not go out with a flash. We checked all the other lights, none had been on (see drawing for “L” or Lamp locations), and all were working fine.

I said it may have been the TV, I rewound the tape, sure enough on the TV program there were “flashes” as Dresden was looking at some dead bodies, but the flashes as played back were nowhere as intense as we both remembered. The conditions could not be repeated.

Maybe it was a street light my wife said, no I said the lights at either end of the block are just too far away and it really was not dark enough outside at the time for us to notice them or to even been on. Besides we can’t even get the city to replace the burnt out one at the end of the bock, been calling them for two years to get it fixed.

Our cat acted like nothing happened, so I'm not looking for a supernatural explanation. The two people who have died in our 1920's house have never been "active" in the 15 years we lived here.

These may sound like ridiculous questions, but paranormal events usually follow certain patterns:

How long have you owned your home? Are you the first owner? Do you have any children, specifically between the ages of 10 and 16? Have there been any recent deaths in the family?

There is a phenomenon called "shadow people" (don't laugh), which paranormal experts have separated from ghosts, hauntings, and poltergeists into its own separate category. Here is some info from Wikipedia, but the best source for this is a radio show called COAST TO COAST AM. If you want, I might be able to dig up an appropriate episode from the show's archives online:

"Shadow people (also known as Shadow men, shadow folk or shadow beings) are a purported supernatural phenomenon in which observers report seeing a dark form at the edge of their field of vision that disintegrates, or moves between walls, when noticed, usually within a split second.

Reports of shadow people are similar to purported ghost sightings, but differ in that shadow people are not reported as having human features, wearing modern/period clothing, or attempting to communicate. Witnesses also do not report the same feelings of being in the presence of something that 'was once human'.

There was no creapy ghostly feelings or sensation of presence.

It really was like a cloud blocked out the sun, and a bolt of lightning flashed. However, it was IN my house.:eek:

Hmmm that is bizarre. What made me initially think "shadow sighting" was that you saw it out of the corner of your eye - a common scientific explaination for "shadow people" is Pareidolia (from the Wiki):

"In most instances, witnesses report seeing shadow people in the peripheral areas of their vision. This areas of vision is linked to the areas of the brain that recognizes patterns, however it provides less detail to the brain than Macula (Center-forward) vision. This can lead to a condition know as pareidolia, in which the brain incorrectly interprets random patterns of light/shadow or texture as being familiar patterns such as faces and human forms.[2] The same condition can also be observed in Macula vision in low light conditions, or when viewing a complex but random image. A common example would be perceiving a shadow, thrown by an item of furniture in a darkened room, as being a person."

The shadow phase was the corner of my eye, but my wife was looking right at it over my shoulder!

We both describe the light part as a "ribbon", she turned her whole head and body to see that part of it.

I turned my head just in time to see the dark to light transition. I turned my head to see the shadow, but it was gone, then the ripple of light - like light off the waves of a lake.

Sounds like an interesting experience.

I'm open to the possibility of ghosts or other weird stuff that's not quickly, easily, or readily explained by current science, but I'm generally skeptical. I'd actually love to see a ghost or something like that.

What I know of you from this board, I'm not quick to think "whatever, he's a nutjob." So this is pretty neat. Keep us informed.

Could it have been a light bulb or smoke detector shorting out? Did you smell any o-zone?

I just talked to my buddy a Vietnam Vet with many near death experiences and who has practiced just about every religion out there as well having a great knowledge of history. He right away thought of shadow people. However I explained the light thing and he mentioned alternate universes, portals through time and some other cool stuff.

I analyzed the room based on my artist knowledge of light and shadow, things you need to know so you can draw and paint.

What I'm showing as a "portal" could just be the window at the top of the stair landing which I forgot to show in the first sketch. If the sun or some car headlights reflected off something and into our house, but there was an object in the way as the car turned, we just maybe I have an explanation – it’s a real stretch either way.

What's all the hubbub... you got to change the channel, right? Probably related to the flashes on the show you were watching. You comfirmed yourself that there were flashes on the tape. Sounds like too strong of a coincidence to ignore.

It would be truly comforting to have a scientifically confirmed existance of ghosts. Beyond faith there is nothing that assures us there is someting beyond the infinity of death.

For me, I hope there are such things.

Do you have kids? If you do, the last thing you want is a time/space continuum porthole they could fall into.

Do ghosts act up for flash camera at all?

I assume you've heard examples of EVP? It's close enough to proof for me...

My take - one of two possibilities:

1. As the sun was setting, some object blocked the light, which cast the original shadow. As the sun moved lower, or as the object moved (possibily in the wind), the shadow turned into the sun refracted through the object, which would be semi-transparent, or something like a stained glass window.

2. A car past your house, and at first blocked the sun, causing the shadow. Then the driver may have put on the headlights -- zenon lights tend to start with a flash.

I would have the Mrs. drive back and forth on the street tonight at around twilight, putting her lights on and off. You may get the same effect, or she may get swallowed up in an energy portal that will transport her into a different dimension. I think it may be a risk worth taking to find the truth...

At the time all the shades in the house were closed, even the one at the top of the stair landing.

It had been a sunny day but had become hazy or overcast by the time twilight came around. It's rained most of today so there has been a change in the weather since then.

That's an arm chair, next to it was our cat on one of those tall tree-like stands. She was unphased by the whole event sleeping on the top tier.

Electronic Voice Phenomena - phase shift of the in-audible to the audible. Nothing more than wave harmonics. Most forms of EMR do this to some extent. See this with light and other forms of energy. Combine it with a natural transducer and you will have this occur. Nothing magic or supernatural.

You should see the amazing things that happen to waves when you get below sub-micron lithography when trying to build microchips.

What is on the other side of the dining room??...windows?

You say she looks over your shoulder which is the dining room and sees something....about the same time you see something on the wall.

It moved fast once you thought you saw something.......like a mouse does.

When she saw it, it might of been in the dining room, I saw her eyes dart as it was over the big tube amp which was off at the time. As you can see there is a window over the tube amp. The shade was closed.

Sometimes on partially sunny and windy days the sun reflects off of the light colored brick garage next door, and when a cloud goes in from of the sun it can be like a light turning off at that window. However you know it's a light souce and the room goes darker, its not a shadow crawling across the upper part of the wall like this time.

The other side of the house faces a white aluminum sided house which can act like a solar mirror with the mid morning light.

I would love to hear your explaination as to what is happening when a paranormal investigator holding a tape recorder falls in a dark basement, and a disembodied voice on the tape (the man was alone in the basement) could be heard saying "Are you okay?"

What is in the direction of the kitchen? Could a bright light have shown in from that direction?

Once in the Montepelier Inn in VT. I said this place is great your only missing a Ghost, They said we have one. I said can I go look to see where. They said first 2 rooms at the top of the stairs. See the #1 on the room at the left I decided that was a good place to start. I was entering the room really aware going in slow WHEN the door slams into me as I'm entering the room.and I think I heard steps going down the hall..OHHH FK DID THAT SCARE ME...come to think of it, it was at about dusk to...I left quickly leaving a tail of pee behind me..well not the pee part I exagerated that part.

Next day I went up and checked that door to see if my weight or something explainable could have cause it to slam in my face. Nope it was either open or it would have been impossible (sic) to keep open.

The owners told me that an elderly lady who was a bit crazy owned the house and died there in the 20s. Since then they have smelled Lilacs when she was present. I think I might have scared her.

The next day I also sat in room 1 very quietly when a maid came to the door and didn't see me, needless to say I gave her a bit of a fright.

Once long ago during college, I lived in the BASEMENT APARTMENT of my real estate professors house.

It was summer and he and his family were gone on vacation somewhere

There were only a couple of windows in the apartment which didn't let in much light. One night while going to sleep, there was this massive flash as if someone set of a flash bulb. It lit up the entire room. I immediately sat up...but there was nothing.

Firefly? Nuclear Firefly? Something.

I laid back down and a few minutes later it happened again. This time I got up and put on the lights and walked around. Nothing I could find.

Never did figure out what it was.

In some ways it sounds similar to what you experienced...wierd light where it shouldn't be.

True story:

At the end of a wild night a couple years ago, I fell into a time/space continuum portal for a couple hours. Traveled time, saw God and came to with a friend standing over me checking my pulse.

Not nearly as much fun as you'd expect. The "portal" I fell into was also a staircase, so I was pretty bruised, and my wife won't let me touch mushrooms anymore.

Geez, no wonder. You brained the poor thing the first time you meet her.

That should surprise no one who has met you.

Anyway here is for the abstract theory..Lisa Randell is a Harvard Proffessor in Physics, she has written a book called "Warped Passages" which is about there being more than the 4 Dimensions we are accustomed to, and that Gravity is alink between them etc. After listening to an interview of her on C Rose, I came to the following conclusions or thoughts

We all know that humans exist in 4 dimensions, height, width, space and time. What if unbeknown to us due to our physical limitations, that we exist in more dimensions as well and that the connection to them is our imaginations/thoughts/dreams and our gut level intutions. That when our bodies die in this dimension we carry on in others. This would expalin alot of our Religious, mythological, near death etc experiences.

Now with Shadow People, Ghosts, Demons and whatnot..what if they are beings that exist in another dimension and they be seen etc because of a momentary or otherwise breakdown in the membrane that exists between dimensions.

This would be the science behind the events that otherwise would stand as imagination gone beserk in the eyes of you scientists.

Humans are going a little beyond E=MC2/ with regards to Physics.
