Financial Recovery from Divorce
I read somewhere a while back that it takes about 5 years to recover financially from a divorce (depending on circumstances). As of this morning I have paid of 25K of 30K in divorce settlement debts in less than a year.

My father went through his 2nd divorce about 3 years ago and he said he's all done with it (financially), but it was a major setback for him.

My Divorce settlement was cheaper than being married to my wife.

My father passed away last August. I'm still paying for his last divorce from wife 4. They got divorced 18 years ago. She was a spitful biatch and really stuck it to the old man. She took out and ran up credit cards in his name, she died and 5 years later they came looking for my father. He had two different law firms work on it and in the end had to take out a 2nd on the house to cover the debt which I'm now paying until we can unload the house.

My X & I settled between ourselves without lawyers. I found somebody to file the paperwork & we made our own settlement agreement, which was accepted by the court. Fortunately no kids involved. She took the house ($40K balance on a $260K house) and $25K in cash. This was in 1985. I didn't have a pot to piss in for quite a while, but I was happy.

I finally get my check from her next week (minus the mediator fees...geez, what a racket). I still have 17% of the equity in the house but otherwise no financial ties.

I have been divorced three times. The cheapest was my first.
I needed out and made her an offer. You get the house. You get the car. You get the cat. I'll pay you for 2 years so you can get a job. Take the offer or I'll have you killed. Hire a lawyer and I'll have you killed. My lawyer wrote to settlement and we were through. We are still friends sort of, separated by 8 states and a good understanding. Leave me alone or I'll have you killed. My second wife heard the story and when it came time for her to go, she got a killer lawyer and he ate my lunch.

Man you guys are lucky...my dad got straight ****ed.
My mom worked for a lawyer, who also represented her. They were both friends with every judge and clerk around. No conflict of interest there...

Why is divorce so expensive?
Because it is worth it. For me, the divorce was not so bad, but the ex cost me a fortune over time with stupid stuff concerning the kids. Last thing she did cost me about $10,000, and almost prevented our daughter from being able to attend college, after she got to school. She is about to divorce her second husband, he just does not know about it yet. He is such culo, I never said anything to him about it. She told me about it in a drunken phone call about 10 years ago. She will definitely go to Hell for the things she has done.

I think my lawyer got more than she did. Maybe hers got tired of listening, do claim was made for my business. We auctioned off the house (I was high bidder), and she got 1/2 what I bid over the loan. It was worth twice as much. I was clear in less than a year.

8 years for me to recover. I had to borrow most of the $35K I needed.

Lewis Grizzard, a humorist/columnist from Georgia (died several years ago) once wrote (after 3-4 divorces) "Instead of getting married again, next time I'll just find a woman I don't like and just buy her a house".

They never got married. He put up with her constant yapping and she put up with his womanizing. She would go away for vaca for a few days and if my father was not there when she got back she'd drive over to the "other" ones house, ring the bell and say "play times over, get your stuff, let's go home". She lasted the longest out of all of his relationships, it was weird but it worked.

I'm just curious, but to any of the posters that had expensive divorces, did you have a pre-nup? The wife and I do, I had family money and property when I came into the marriage, and honestly, she didn't want any of it, and had her won money as well. Don't get me wrong, we have no plans for divorce, I just wanted to know. I'm asking because I'm not sure my pre-nup would do me good at this point, I hear they are easily contested.
