Finally! My Tristar is here!

I've had the Tristar listed as one of my cars below for months now because I did own it. I just didn't have it, as it was in customs and getting CA-legal. But I picked it up today. It came from northern Sweden where it's too cold to salt roads. Therefore, no rust. It runs and handles great, and is great fun to drive.

At 112 HP, and 3600 pounds, it moves along pretty good. My Westy weighs 5150 pounds and has 80 HP. My dream is to trailer my 911 to races, but it may need a little more HP and torque. Maybe a 1.8T VW engine (220 HP and loads of torque) is in order some day.

A friend of mine has one of those; he recently installed a Subaru SVX engine.

Neat ride! I also was thinking L1011 when I read the post title.

What makes it a Tri-Star? Is it something other than a Vanagan Pickup? Just questioning the name - it's a very cool vehicle and I'd love one.

What makes it a Tristar is both the 4 doors and a luxury interior. Other Double cabs may have 4 doors, although most have three (no rear door on the driver's side) The interior is pretty plush, with a nice fabric headliner, nice door panels, and extra sound proofing. The doors feel and sound solid, not tinny like a regular vanagon. Non-Tristars have more vinyl and less carpeting and such in the interior.

Not often I feel right at home looking at cars with Swedish plates on this forum. But importing all they way from here? Are they scarce in US? I seem to see them rather often here.

They were never sold in the US, so yes, they are very rare here. I've only seen one other by chance on the road. (I've seen others at get-togethers) I think there are less than 20 in California. I like driving a car that came from near my grandfather's home town.

"Came from" as in where it was manufactured or bought ? If the latter, what town in Sweden?

It was built in Wolfsburg. But it was owned by a farmer in Dille, due west of my grandfather's home town of Orsnkoldvik.

Ah, ancestry from Ö-vik (Örnsköldsvik)! Nice place. Good breeding ground for hockey players.
How far west of that is Dille? The only place I know of by that name in that part of Sweden is at least 150 miles away. A tiny little village.

That's the place. I called it close to my grandfather's hometown and it is, compared to here in California.

Here are some interior shots, as promised.

How do you get something like that legal in Cali?

I had enough trouble trying to get my Carrera to pass smog

Ah yes. The sticker say Östersund. I think that is the closest "city". We use to go skiing in Åre, rather near by.
