Is my 46" rear projection TV worth attempting to repair?

Okay, I'll admit it up front. I DROPPED the TV down the stairs. Okay, when you stop laughing, we can resume.....

Anyway, it went end over end down the stairs and made sounds like shattering glass all the way down. Okay, take a break for more laughter...

So, to resume. I have not yet opened it up. But I assume I have destroyed the CRT's and the mirror. But the front screen was protected and is intact. The builtin stereo is probably okay. And the body shell is remarkably undamaged. So I assume I need three new CRT projectors and a mirror. Is this worth fixing?

When you can pickup a 720p 42" Plasma for $850, I would say no.

Janus,

Sorry to say but that is the best laugh I have had all day. "End over end" would have loved to have been there and seen everyone's faces. Course this comes after I have carried televisions up stairs like that and prayed that I did not drop it right back down. Hope I never do it myself.

IMHO its time for the "bulk trash pickup" or put an ad in Craigslist for someone to take it for whatever spare parts are left in the unit.

Plug it in and see what happens. You may have just broken the mirror and thrown the CRTs out of alignment. A mirror is cheap, and aligning the CTRs can be done with your remote control to a ceretain extent.
It might be toast or it might be OK.

There's probably no danger in plugging it in, but why bother? It could blow fuses or worse. It sounds like the mirror is gone and I'm sure the crt's are most likely gone too.

Good time to upgrade and upsize. I still have rear projection crts here too. Love the picture, just don't have the viewing angles of the new ones.

Hey man, I was hoping it would provide some levity. Glad it gave you a chuckle!

As it turns out, my friend William came over to inspect the carcass. And William knows a lot about electronics. So he inspected the thing and declared it was fixable. So he poked around a bit a Voila! He had the thing working pretty soon. It isn't perfect and may still need some new parts. But it works!

I was absolutely dumbfounded. You had to see the thing sumersaulting down the stairs to understand why I assumed it HAD to be destroyed. But William had it looking almost good. Not perfect. But boy, with a little tweaking I bet it will be perfect again. AMAZING.

Good call, Chris. I almost forgot to tell them that part of the story.

The TV cost me $50...cold, hard cash. Basically the deal is that big TV's are hard to sell because they cost too much to ship. So you can get them on eBay for pennies - as long as you are willing to pick it up yourself and break your back. So I saw an auction on eBay for a 46" TV at $50 which got NO BIDS...none...nada...so I emailed the seller and offered him $50 and he jumped at it. So I picked it up on Saturday and yeah, it was motherf*cking heavy. But I packed it into the hatchback of my 944 and drove it home no problem (No kidding. You'd be amazed what will fit in the back of a 944...the hatch is 48" wide - There truly is no substitute...) and then promptly DROPPED the TV down the stairs trying to get it into my house...

So that was why I was so willing to fix it. I figured if it cost me $100 to repair, then it would be a $150 TV. With so little invested in the TV, I figured I could not lose.

Here is a pic of the $50 Indestructible Beast...
