Powerful Hurricane Lane Lumbers Toward Hawaii As Residents Prepare
Please keep our island brothers and sisters in your thoughts....hopefully Lane will make a hard left turn and Oahu will avoid the brunt.
Bryan, Geary, Rich.....keep us posted if we can help! LINK Hawaii residents are bracing as Hurricane Lane slowly neared the islands Thursday. Lane, a Category 4 storm moving northwest at 7 mph with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph, will have its center "move very close to or over the main Hawaiian Islands" Thursday through Friday, the National Weather Service said Wednesday night local time. Oahu island, which includes the capital Honolulu and most of the state's population, is under a hurricane warning, along with Maui County and Hawaii County. A hurricane watch is in effect for Kauai County. The National Weather Service in Honolulu reported rainfall on the Big Island already reaching 8 inches in 12 hours late Wednesday. Lane is expected to remain a hurricane "as it approaches the islands," according to the agency. Hurricane-force winds will extend up to 40 miles out from the storm's center; tropical-storm-force winds will extend up to 140 miles. ![]()

Hawaii has had a rough go of things this year. Hopefully the forecast is correct and it significantly weakens before it gets to the islands. If you're there, stay safe! I'm hoping to make my first trip there in March of next year.

Kauai is still recovering from land slides and such. More rain is the last thing they need.

I thought it would just put out the lava on top of the volcano and cap it.

I just chatted with a friend in Kona, just starting to rain heavily. Not much wind there yet. He's pretty relaxed as it is already a bit to the southwest of the big island and moving away. Will probably have a very rainy night.
The surf just came up this afternoon to about six feet in kona. I spoke with the ex on Kauai a while ago, they have boarded up the house in Haena and are going to stay in the condo in Princeville for the duration. They are planning to close the road out past hanalei tonight. There may well be more landslides in the areas of the last ones from a few months ago if it does rain as much as expected. I do hope that it stays to the south of the islands, they have had to deal with a lot already this year. I'l update as I hear more details. Cheers Richard |

Thanks for the info, Rich! Please do keep us posted.
Of course, according the The Weather Channel...the world is coming to an end. I love it when they're on the beach talking about all the concerned residents and then you see people going in and out of the ocean enjoying their day...lol. I understand the Air Force is moving their aircraft out of Hickam Field and the Navy is moving their ships and subs out to sea. Residents are also taking precautions..... ![]()

Ha, taping down da slippas, that's funny Baz.
Be sure that folks on Kauai are taking it seriously right now! The memory of Iniki is still fresh enough for folks there to plan on being as ready as possible. Too much preparation is not excessive, after having gone thru a big one. Fingers crossed for Hawaii. Cheers Richard |

Baz, taking hurricane precautions
I would think rain on lava would give you fog with a fair amount of sulfuric acid in it, which would suck. It would cool off the surface, give you a black crust on top at the caldera, but if Pele is feelin' it, that crust won't get too thick before it starts churning, maybe popping up in the air.

As spectacular and dramatic as the coverage of this phase of the eruption has been, this will help put into perspective. Of the over 4,000 square miles of the big island these flows have covered less than ten square miles.
New image debunks misconception of scale of Big Island lava flow - Hawaii News Now - KGMB and KHNL Don't get me wrong Pele is the queen of the big island, no doubt, but this eruption is contained in a very small area. The vog affects a lot of the island, but it's been that way more or less since the 1980s. Granted it is more lately. For the folks that live in that particular corner of the island it's been very impactful and news worthy. But for most of Hawaii that's a small remote area. Now a major hurricane land fall can and has caused island wide devastating damage. Also causing damage on other nearby islands as well, taking years to recover from. Heavy rains, power outages, landslides, all a bummer, but the recovery from that is usually in terms of days or a few weeks. Recovering from direct hit is much more long term situation. Still praying that this one stays well south of the islands. Cheers Richard |

Hurricane Lane was downgraded to a tropical storm early this morning, whew looks like Kauai caught a break for a change. It's become known as the hurricane magnet in Hawaii.
The heaviest impacts of this storm seems to be on the southeast sides of the Big Island and Maui. Pretty tremendous amounts of rain did fall on the volcano. We'll have to see what impact this has on the eruption. Not much me thinks. Still lots of rain likely to come yet. But at least the most destructive potential is past. On a personal note I'm hoping the ongoing rains don't cause more damage along the road to Wainiha and Haena, on the north shore of Kauai. The repairs from the May storm have been ongoing and were were getting a little closer to possibly resuming normal access maybe later this year. But the bare hillsides left by those big slides are vulnerable to more rains. I would hate to see more slides bury the work done to this point. Further setting back the allready slow recovery. Still fingers crossed. Cheers Richard |

Thanks for the updates, Rich. So happy to hear our islanders dodged a bullet there. Will continue to pray and keep in my thoughts for relief from rains.

I always watch the Weather Channel in the morning, was hoping for an Atlantic update.
I know the rains in Hawaii have been devastating, but the video of a local Life Guard facing the camera and tell everyone to stay out of the water, while families were swimming not 50ft behind him was hysterical. In storms like this and others I have experienced, Wind is spokesman, Water is the enemy.
