Yes, in both FL. & GA, today is Confederate Memorial Day, a time to remember our fallen.

Nice outfit...
...meanwhile, (and possibly with some irony) the General Lee is for sale.

Is today the anniversary of the day the Confederates started, ended or something in between?

We still have my great grandfathers cap and ball pistol. My Father framed it with a Confederate belt buckle, a couple of bullets, some Confederate money and so on. Brother keeps it hung on his office wall. The butt end of it is cracked. He said that after he ran out of time to reload, he turned it around and started knocking heads with it. RIP

Byron... you're a little early for me. We here in the Carolinas wait until May 10th.
Florida and Georgia commemorate the surrender of Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston to Union General William Sherman on April 26, 1865. North and South Carolina choose May 10th to commemorate the death of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson (5/10/1863) and the capture of Confederate president Jefferson Davis (5/10/1865).

My birthday is 4/23. When I turned 16 I couldn't wait to get to the driver's license office to get my license. A few days after my birthday Dad took me down and... it was closed for Confederate Memorial Day. Grrrrrrrr. The government emplyees in GA actually had the day off!

And Memorial Day (the one those Yankees celebrate) is to remember the fallen on both sides of the civil war, altough it has been exapnded to remember all of our fallen service men (and women)

Be sure to tell him that us Americans are drinking to the health of US Grant and Abe Lincoln and celebrating the defeat of the American version of the Holocaust and mourning that the North allowed a hundred years of terror before forcing the south to rejoin the North.
By the way, "Stonewall" Jackson got his name derisively from a fellow confederate general who was in the middle of the fight, looking for reinforcements and saw Jackson's men holding their positions. He stated: "Look, there's Jackson, standing like a damned stone wall." The Stonewall myth was created only after he was gunned down by his own men at the end of the Battle of Chancellorville, and a better day's work they never did.

Jackson received the nickname during the Battle of Bull Run in 1861. During the battle the rebels were on retreat except for one brigade commanded by General Jackson. Due to Jackson's ability to hold his ground and his stubbornness, the men saw him similar to a stonewall, hence the nickname "Stonewall" Jackson. You make it sound as if his own me shot him due to his ineptitude. The thing you got correct was that it WAS at Chancellorsville in 1863 (right outside Fredericksburg Va.) BUT he and his escort was fired upon when mistaken as the enemy. I’m no diehard rebel, in fact I’m a Yankee but I do like to see history told correctly.

Wow I've lived in the south my entire life and I never knew there was a Confederate Memorial Day--cool!
Edit: Is that a Spynx (hairless) cat Byron? Sure looks like it.
