Image Size

I am trying to upload an image of my '80 Targa to use as an avartar and the site says that the image is to large. How do I make it smaller so I can use it when I post?

Well, you need to use piece of software that can scale down the image. There are many out there but the two most popular are

Photoshop - which is very expensive

The GIMP - which is free. Look for the Gimp for Windows if you are using Windows.

There is also another piece of software called MicroAngelo which makes icons. I have not used that one in years. It takes a little playing to get it right.

The other route is to post your picture and ask others very nicely to do the work for you. I have found that many are willing to photoshop pictures at the request of others.

Good luck

Matt

If you run XP the absolute best (easiest and simple) way it to download the MS Power Toys and download the image sizer. Its as simple as a right click the photo and pick the size you want and it will make a copy of your original (leaving it alone) and making you a copy. It will do 1 picture or 100!!! They also have a RAW viewer. No doubt about it!

I used photoshop to drop the jpeg size to about 760k.

VBulletin (the forum software here) has a file size limit of about 2megs (or was it 3???) either way think about other users who don't have broadband connections and server here which needs to balance the load of sending lots of heavy pictures to each member when they view a thread.

Most people will notice an increase after visiting the same thread again since most of the page is put into your browsers cache (local memory).

You could just set your camera to take lower resolution pictures and not have to worry about scaling your pictures afterwards, but then you would have lower quality pictures for your own ... hmmmm

check out download.com and I'm sure you'll find something for Windoze for free. I didn't know about the Microsoft solution.

For Mac users go to versiontracker.com they have lots of free stuff too. Or use the previews the software that comes included and drop the quality of the image and hit save.

GIMP is great! Almost better than photoshop which is really expensive. But both of these have a lot of things that you really don't need unless you want to get fancy

Just right click on your picture, select EDIT and the pic opens with MS paint.

Goto Image/Stretch-Skew (or press CTRL W) and change the 100x100% to ,say, 75% by 75% and then save as..

The only reason I like the MS option is because all you have to do is 'right click' on the picture and resize it - no additional programs to open. It takes less than 5 seconds to do and its SO easy even a caveman can do it!

Microsoft Office Picture Manager. Click on Edit Pictures, then select re-size.

Why don't you just use Paint?
Open the image in Paint, click on "Image" and select "Stretch/Skew" from the drop down. When you reduce the vertical and horizontal it will reduce the image size and the pixel count.

I'll second Super_Dave's recommend for XP Power Toys. Right click the image and choose a size. Works for multiple selections too. Resize all selected images with a single right click.

My Nikon point and shoot digital came with photo editing software that performs the usual photo enhancing, croping, resize, red-eye, sepia, b&w. I used to use Photoshop found it overkill for 90% of my modest needs.

It's tricky to get avatars to look good. Post the image or a link to it here and I'll take a stab at it for you.
