IP itself is a primitive protocol (as are many of the application infrastructures built around it) imo, but that's not necessarily a knock...it is what it is. The increase in hardware & network speeds have masked the gross inefficiencies of many protocols and applications. As a systems/networking geek, I shudder when I look "under the covers"...like seeing hotdogs being made...you don't want too . I've been aware of how HTTP connections worked for years, but never knew this tip...thanks Wayne!

Not to come off as condescending but if you ask these questions you should not be fooling with the registry settings.

The registry mentioned holds the key parameters and configuration settings necessary for your operating system to work properly. You could easily cripple your system to the point of needing a reinstall.

That said, I would recommend taking a few minutes to understand more about the registry and how to back-up before editing (this varies between OS versions).

I managed to install the Fasterfox software, but can't seem to be able to follow the instructions to the manager like the screenshot shown here. So, I don't know if I enabled it or not.

I gotta agree with Rick, if you don't know what this is all about, be careful. I was just going to use the prepackaged stuff and I can't even do that.

There is still a lot of web based software that is used by business that only works with IE.

But for general browsing I agree - Mozilla is much better than IE. Generally I find FF to be considerably faster.

Still lots of problems using FF with a widescreen monitor. I have installed IE Lite which allows one to have certain sites open in IE while using FF but it slows everything down because the site will open in FF then switch to IE. I guess its better than having to use both browsers at the same time.

Milt: I found it very easy to follow the instructions in the first link posted by Steve. Print them out, close all but one instance of Firefox and go for it. Here it is again: http://blog.brainstormbrand.com/productivity/2007/04/9-steps-to-speed-upbroadband-firefox-browsing

Note: The first step asks you to type "about:config" in the address bar. Make sure you type accurately as it is easy to type "about.config".....you need to use the colon (but no quotes).

Also, realize that when double clicking on certain config lines the value will flip from True to False or vice versa. When double clicking on others a popup box will appear where you can replace existing values.

Thanks once again, Rick. I went thru and all of the values were what was on the page already but one. I closed the page, closed FF, restarted and went back to our thread here that had the link to the speed test. I guess the physics will always be the same because my speed was unchanged. I also noticed no change in viewing a thread page with a lot of pics. So, I will just either get 3000 kbs DSL or wait it out until they finish the FIOS system in my neighborhood.

For those IE users who didn't follow the link masraum gave:

0. Backup registry

1. Click Start - Run.
2. Type "regedit" and click OK.
3. In the left pane navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings
4. In the right pane you should see the contents of Internet Settings.
5. Check Regedit's right-hand column for the following two lines (values): MaxConnectionsPerServer MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
6. If these values are present, right-click on the first value (MaxConnectionsPerServer), select Modify from the drop-down menu, click Decimal, and set the Value data field to 6. Repeat this process for the second value (MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server).
7. If these lines (values) are not listed, right-click on the white region of Regedit's right-hand column, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
8. Enter MaxConnectionsPerServer for the name of the new DWORD Value and press Enter. The new value should now appear in Regedit's right-hand column.
9. Right-click the new value and click Modify.
10. As in step six, click Decimal and set the Value Data field to 6, then click OK.
11. Repeat steps seven through 10 using MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server as the new DWORD Value name instead of MaxConnectionsPerServer.
12. Close Regedit and test Internet Explorer.

Just came across this... in the settings you can set the number of
connections also set some other neat stuff. I had done what Wayne
suggested, I set my connections to 8. When I installed the IE7 Pro
it picked up my settings ! I like the IE& Pro

After installing the Fasterfox, I found several images would come up broken up, partial, or heavily pixelated. Also, for the first time, youtube videos would stop shortly after starting. A local computer guy said Fasterfox sometimes causes that, and disabling it helped. The problems still persisted, and I increased my cache from 50 MB to 100 MB and so far everything's good. I posted a thread about it, but nobody here responded. I have little idea of what I'm doing. Does the cache setting seem about right now?
