Has Anyone Read THE ROAD by McCarthy Yet?

I have a had a few freinds highly recommend The Road by Cormack McCarthy. I just got it from Amazon for a few bucks, haven't started it yet. Looks like a quick, airplane read. Here is the thing, one friend has been having rough dreams since she read it and the other has taken on a different outlook on life (for now). Has anyone read this book? If so, what was your take on it?

I finished it two weeks ago while in NY on business. It's a very quick read, but its theme is extremely grim, and the narrative stays with you for a very long time. I knew right away to start reading another book - any book - to help mitigate "The Road" and its grim subject matter. Has it changed my outlook on life? I'm not sure. After reading the book, I can't imagine what sort of new outlook on life one is supposed to have, as the book is written when there exists little to no life. This won the 2007 Pulitzer for Fiction, btw. Even so, it should not be recommended as casual or light reading. It's anything but that.

I've tried to read 2 of CM's books and simply can't get through them. Grim is an understatement. But holy christmas, his prose and imagery are so fantastic his books will surely be featured in american literature classes--if they aren't already. He's an amazing author but too hard for me to read, which I do for pure mindless enjoyment. J
