C.C. Meyers, my hero
C.C. Meyers construction company rebuilt the 580 freeway collapse area in Oakland in about 28 days. They also rebuilt many overcrossings in LA after the Northridge earthquake in very short order.
While I admire C.C. Meyers for their hard work and all, I think this also says an awful lot about how inefficient and obstructionist gov't is. When something like a freeway absolutely must be built, the job gets turned over to private industry, with none of the usual bureaucracy to get in the way. And they get the job done. I work with construction on a daily basis, and the time it takes to complete the most simple, minor task, when the local planning department or the Coastal Commission, or the Dept of Fish and Game, etc gets involved is just mind boggling. They routinely halt everything for no logical reason whatsoever. It's a story right out of Atlas Shrugged.
