School House Rock

Not sure why I got the idea but I went on-line and bought the School House Rock DVD for Our Kids from Amazon.com.

Anyone have this for their kids?

yep, have an old VHS copy that my 6 and 8 year old girls still play. Nothing like getting those songs stuck in your head for the day.

It's hard to believe I'm 39 and still remember this info. Now where are my car keys?

Driving around one day and "VERB!" popped into my head. Got to the office, dialed up Amazon and had the DVD's 3 days later. Kids love it.

Just picked up Bugs Bunny DVD's a couple months ago and have re-initiated the the Saturday AM ritual of kids watching Bugs & Tweety while dad fixes pancakes. This time I'm the dad.

Simple things in life. Reminds me of when my life was simple.

Yep, we've had the CD/DVD set for years and our kids have enjoyed them as much as us!

Now when Our Son turns 12 or 13 I will have to introduce him to the 3 Stooges (no Shemp though, only the real Curly).

I saw Bob Dorough at a jazz club in New York. The crowd was a bunch of thirty and fourty somethings, they love this guy. He did a rendition of "Baby it's cold outside" with a very lovely young lady. He was perfect, they were perfect. A great time...

My wife is a music teacher for 3yo thru 2nd grade and uses School House Rock in her lesson plans one week a year. The Headmaster thought she was a little nuts and that the kids wouldn't get it, or even care, but its received great results. The parents usually bring up that their child was singing it in the back of their car and they remembered it and sang along.

FYI, they are available on iTunes as well.

Forty days and forty nights,
Didn't it rain, children.
Not a speck of land in sight,
Didn't it, didn't it rain.
But Noah built the ark so tight
They sailed on, children.
And when at last the waters receded
And the dove brought back the olive tree leaf,
He landed that ship near Mount Ararat
And one of his children grabbed Noah's robe and said,
"Hey Dad, how many animals on this old ark anyway, huh?"

Elementary, my dear, two time two is four.
Elementary, my dear, two time three is six.
Elementary, my dear, two time four is eight.
Elementary, my dear, two time five is ten.

Two times one is two, of course.
And it must occur to you,
You get an even number
Every time you multiply by two.

Elementary, my dear, two time six is twelve.
Elementary, my dear, two time seven is fourteen.
Elementary, my dear, two times eight is sixteen.
Elementary, my dear, two times nine is eighteen.

Two times ten is twenty, eleven twice is twenty-two.
Double twelve that's twenty-four, thirteen twice is twenty-six,
Fourteen twice is twenty-eight, fifteen twice is thirty, now you build it up on thirty,
Sixteen twice is thirty-two, elementary.
Seventeen twice is thirty-four, elementary.
Eighteen twice is thirty-six, elementary.
Nineteen twice is thirty-eight, elementary.
Twenty twice is forty, and it must occur to you,
You can double any number,
All you do is multiply by two...

Elementary, my dear, two time two is four. (Woo!)
Elementary, my dear, two time three is six. (Yeah!)
Elementary, my dear, two time four is eight. (Woop!)
Elementary, my dear, two time five is ten. (Yeah!)

Now, if you want to multiply two times 174,
Or some big number like that,
Two times 174 equals two times 100 plus two times 70 plus two times 4
That's all.
So two times 174 equals 200 plus 140 plus 8 ... or 348.
It's elementary!

Elementary... elementary...

Twice 32 is 64, elementary...
Twice 33 is 66, elementary...
Twice 34 is 68, elementary...
Twice 35 is 70, elementary...
Yeah, yes, it's elementary, yeah.

Now, what's two times 98?

Aww! That's hard!

No, it's very simple.
Two times 98 equals two times a hundred, minus two times two.
That's 200 minus four ... 196.
Elementary.

Forty days and forty nights
Didn't it rain, children?

Hookin' up words and phrases and clauses...

They remain fantastic. My kids loved them as much as I did when they first came out.

Pure genius.

It's not too often that something comes along that EVERYONE likes and everyone can relate to. This is one of those things.

Just learned two things talking to the wife about this: First, apparently Disney owns the rights to all the songs now (makes sense, they were originally on ABC network, now owned by Disney). The original songs appear on a lot of the Disney Music CDs, apparently.

Second, she showed me a CD she has (didn't realize, I'm ripping the tracks now to put on my .mp3 player) called simply "School House Rock Rocks!", featuring all of the original Schoolhouse Rock songs performed by various artists (Three Is a Magic Number is performed by Blind Melon, Conjunction Junction by Better than Ezra, Very: That's What's Happening by Moby, etc. . .) Pretty cool - I'd recommend picking it up if you're into that thing. It's a fun album thus far.

Good stuff. I read an interview of the guy who wrote Conjunction Junction (and a bunch of those other songs) in the LA Times (?) about 10 years ago. He mused that he could go into just about any restaurant in the country, say "Conjunction Junction..." and have the 20-something-year-old waitress reply "...what's your function?" Classic.
