Stupid behavior is stupid behavior. The desire to label it as one side or the other is part of human nature's need to put things in a box to simplify a world view.
This is one of the most cogent, coherent and accurate things I've ever read on PPOT.

(and no, I'm not being sarcastic.)

No. We don't know this. Nice try, though. If you're trying to put a liberal tag on this, then it makes sense to start small. Eliminate an option or two. But this doesn't work. I am a liberal, in a liberal area. I know a LOT of liberals. I do not know anybody who would be the slightest bit interested in having anything to do with a stunt like this. But I do know of a group of folks, considered to be extreme right-wing, who are fixated on swastikas. Nice try, but the 'liberal' tag is getting pretty worn generally, and is a poor fit here.

So.....the guard at my work place and several of you guys are not ready to take an objective look at what's happening. So........as a means of evading objectivity, you guys will certainly continue to find examples that "settle" matters in your minds. Meanwhile......something significant is happening in my country. It's very interesting.

Do you see the irony of this discussion? We can't agree whether the crime was committed by 1) Drunk teens who were looking for shock value; 2) Skinhead punks who were making a fascist statement; or 3) Anti-war activists who were trying to make the statement that the US military equals fascism. So whoever did it, they failed in conveying whatever twisted idea they were promoted.

For what it's worth, drunk teens and/or skinhead punks still seem like the logical suspects to me. It took me several reads of the first two pages of posts to understand the interpretation that replacing American flags with swastikas could be a protest equating the US military is fascism. It just seemed to obvious to me that replacing the flags with swastikas was the work of someone promoting fascism. If they were trying to make an anti-war statement I would have expected some grafiti allong with the swastikas calling America a fascist state.

Not that I would ever do something like this, but replacing the flags with peace flags or Exxon/Mobil corporate banners would of made more sense if "so-called liberal" messages were being expressed.

The skin-head Nazi thing was a thought that came to me after I read the UK article, it started to connect some dots.

I think who ever did this will one day escalate their anti-social antics and end up in jail for a long time on another unrelated charge. Just give the punks some time, we will be paying $50,000 a year to house and feed these morons in our penal system.

Technically, Nazis are far Right, not far Left (they had little love for the Soviets, and vice-versa, for instance). FWIW, no less a Conservative than Winston Churchill thought the far-right Nazis more heinous than the far-left Soviets, though he detested both. Nazis were also good at burning flags, books and human beings, so there is no reason to yet rule out Righties.

Early supporters of Hitler, both in his country and in the Western Democracies were right-wing. Republicans here accused the very liberal FDR of treason and the like for even attempting to put the US behind the English cause - the cause that today is known far and wide as "the last good war."

This changed, most notably in people like Vandenberg, during and after WWII, as did the positions of the parties at that time. Democrats got us into every major war in the 20th Century (WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam). As the latter two did not end well, you can perhaps forgive them for being cautious.

Republicans talked tough but did not get us into a significant war until Bush I. As the second war of Bush II is not going well, it will be interesting to see if the parties switch sides on the issue of war again.

In any case, who did this cruel and childish thing is up for grabs. No matter who did it, they should be punished - not because they differ from us in opinion - the First Amendment allows us all that - but because what they did causes mental harm and disgust to the great body of Society - which is typical of the actions of both the far left and the far right.

for those who don't know... haven't been to the (US)San Juan islands... there is a seriously funky (uber -liberal) sort up there. They seem to believe that they have their own country in those islands. They will ask "mainlanders" when will they be returning to the States.(for example)

Orcas isn't generally as bad as its neighbor San Juan, init's funk... but it is still Plenty funky. (in an uber-liberal way);)

Maybe the vandals were just board and are trying to spice up a fight between the extreem right and extreem left.

You know, sometimes in the mideast a car bomb goes off and no one claims responsibility just so that the main factions keep killing each other off.

In further news:
Phil Spector, the legendary record producer, famous for his Wall of Sound concept in the 60's and suspected of murdering B-movie actress Lana Clarkson, allegedly said to his chauffuer "I think I killed someone." After a shot was heard, Spector emerged from his home uttering the incriminating words and with the murder weapon in his right hand, .......
-----------

Two humpback whales, a mother and her calf, once trapped in the upper Sacramento river, swam toward the Golden Gate bridge today. Onlookers on the north shore observed the water-borne mammals moving to their right, hopeful of their finding a path toward the safety of the open ocean............
----------

Vice President Cheney's lawyer requested the Secret Service to eliminate data on who visited Cheney at his official residence. Citing secrecy under the Presidential Records Act, Mr. Cheney, upon greeting Secret Service staffers with a friendly wave of his right hand, thanked them for their cooperation and patriotism........

Further proof that extreme leftists are responsible.

PS: All news accounts are true except for the embellishments I rightly added.

Lame-o effort to pin cretinous acts on reasonable people.

As long as the "Republicans" here speak out against clinic bombings, shooting of physicians and spraying of swastikas, I give them the benefit of the doubt. There was at least one notorious poster here who wouldn't condemn Tim McVeigh, and I presume/hope he was the only one.

So every time a kid does something to stir up the adults, we get this type of name calling. Kids from a rival high school put the Mexican flag up over an upside down US flag. And the photo immediately popped up on all the 'white power' and Klan sites as a 'political statement' instead of the dumb prank it was.

There are enough dumb things being done by real Republicans and Democrats to argue over, without blaming imagined perpetrators for inflammatory stunts.
