If you are blessed with any chops and you want to work your arse off then you shall get what you want and more.

Leave the job and get on with it. ***** the fact that you have nothing lined up. You will have to get your shyt together but you'll do fine. Better then before.

Then again, I'm a pill popping idiot from Tejas so take anything I say with two fingers of Scotch!

Mr. Mike Hemingway. Always a pleasure. Such finesse in disguise! :D

that's why they call it 'work'. we don't all enjoy our jobs.

btw, failure in real estate due to conscience is a badge of honor and decency in my book. failing at a chosen profession, however, is not. you have a wife and you owe it to her to bring home a dependable paycheck.

berettafan 05-30-2007 10:08 AM

btw, i am always jealous of folks who were smart enough to choose an education in engineering. what a cool thing to be a part of!

Not a bad idea, the Melbourne area has a tremendous computer related industry.

I used to live in Cape Canaveral 1 blovk from the ocean, after my paycheck every week I had $20 for food for the next week. I was not making it financially. But you know what? Some of my most cherished memories with my wife and 1st son come from living there. I had a lot of free time back then and we were on the beach every weekend and every night.

Why, because even back then I worked to live. A job is a job but how you enjoy life outside of work is where it counts.

Some will disagree as they go on a 40 year money grab accumulating as much wealth as possible so they can retire and enjoy themselves when they are just about too old to really enjoy it.

I enjoy life now and have been since I was a teen. I have no regrets my only goal is to have a good time play hard and die poor.

A job is just a tool to give you money to go out and have fun.

I hope Rammstein replies to this soon...I'm starting to worry.

I am ready to Take the Targa down to South beach and search every topless beachgoers blanket until I find him.

His post mentioned that he was packing up to move to a new condo. Probably doesn't have his internets flowing yet, or is too busy to reply.

There's lots of great ideas in here though, hopefully he finds some of it helpful.

I was in a bit of a funk a few years ago. All of my experience was in sales and I had come to hate it. I bought a book called "what next?"by Barbara Moses. Its one of the many career books out there but I picked it up and poured through it.

Frustratingly it seemed to point to the fact that what I was doing was mostly what I should be doing in my life. The author stated that if you really hated your job you would have quit in a week and never went back. As I continued to read I discovered what I liked and what I didnt in my job and started to look for a new job that had the positives attributes but not the negatives.

In my case I am still in sales but I dont have the pressure of a monthly quota or an axe hanging over my head. I wish the pay was more (dont we all) but overall I am happy and feel good about my job.

good luck, life is too short to work at something you hate. You spend close to 2000 hours a year working, make them good ones.

I can 2nd what Legion is saying. I'm in technical sales (and I'm not even an engineer!) in the electronics industry. Each industry and company is different. I've generally found that Electronics is far less political then lets say -- insurance or real-estate. I spend my days getting to know my customers and what they want and need, and then try to help them to understand what the firm I represent offers for technologies and services that will help them to achieve their objectives. For the most part, the politics are what I would call "good politics" as opposed to "bad politics". To me "good politics" means different people with different (but largely reasonable and rational) objectives -- and part of my job is understand them all and develop a strategy that accomplishes what I want to accomplish -- namely buying from the firm I rep for, while taking into account the varied objectives of those different people. There is also relatively little "bad politics" -- which means people jerking you around because just because they can, and stuff like that.

So a lot of it is finding the right industry. Generally technology and innovation are inversely related to "bad politics". When people's jobs depend on getting the best product out first, they become very focused on the essentials. One industry that would seem to be high in these factors, and you might be qualified for is bio-mechanical products. So new tools, instruments or products used in the health-care industry. An added benefit is that there is a very clear connection between what you'd be selling and real benefits to real people.

Give it a thought! SmileWavy

Continuing with this merging sales and engineering, I'll give another personal example. My wife's best friend is a chemical engineer with 3M. She has been on the fast track too. She is now a manager, she's been working overseas and all over the country. She's working on her MBA now, but the thing that keeps her from real advancment is her lack of sales experience. She's been told this by those at the top.

Funny you'd think a 38 yr old hot blonde mgr would be married by now, but she works all the time and has no personal life. -Never married and no kids. Of course her unrealistic ideal man doesn't really exist either.

My dad was a chemical engineer and then got into sales, selling stuff like galium arcenide, photo resist, etc. He has it pretty good, company car (worth a LOT in NJ, since they pay for insur., personal gas usage, etc.), works from home, can take my mom travelling with him, go sailing when he wants. I can't imagine many better jobs out there.

legion 06-21-2007 06:14 PM

Rammstein just posted on the 944 forum... He is alive and well. Just wanted to let everyone know as I've gotten a few PMs in the last few weeks asking if I'd heard from him/knew how to contact him.
