Does Your Neighbour Piss You Off?

My city noise by-laws do not cover daytime noise. My neighbor is too loud. Suggestions?

The one time you spoke to him, he complied. I would keep it along those lines until you think more drastic action is necessary.

Don't let it build up, talk to him today, and be neighborly.

Have your kids and their friends start a "garage band" in your back yard. If they don't play instruments yet, all the better. What a great way to learn!!!

Shouldn't take too long...

I can relate 100%. Having ignorant ********* neighbors is the pits.

On one side of me, I have the most considerate neighbor you could ever hope for. Absolutely fantastic guy... we often split rentals on equipment and help each other out with projects. Actually I'm just taking a lunch break right now, we rented a lawn aerator today. This is how great a neighbor he is: because my wife's away for a few weeks, he and his wife are bringing me supper every few days.

Then there's the folks behind us. Absolute trash. Their father died the first year we bought our house, and they took over the property. It inspired me to put up a 142' long, 6' high fence. Anyway, like your neighbors, they just love to blast music all night long. I spoke to them a couple times, but it had no effect. Now I just call the cops, and they are always here within 10 minutes.

Some people are just ignorant *********s, and it's a real crapshoot with neighbors.

Consider getting a good thick hedge that can damp the noise... there may not be any other long term solution.

Sounds to me like you expressed an opinion about it once relative to a single event.

You can't get pisseD at him if he has no idea how you feel.

Grab a couple of cold ones and speak to him 1st.

I have found that the easiest way to escalate a situation with a neighbor is to call the cops, send letters etc... without talking to them 1st.

If you have a conversation and he is a dick about it then at least you tried.

if you plan on living there, you better open up the lines of communication ASAP. give the idiot a chance to make it up. for the most parts, my neighbors are cool. we leave notes when someone plans a party. so far so good.

...there is this one fool across the street, but this is your story

I have yappy lap dogs that are teated like children next door to me. Every time I am in my yard playing with my kids they are at the fence yapping at us non stop until the owner brings them inside.

They dig under the fence to try to get into my yard all the time. Blah Blah Blah....

These dogs are her children no talking is going to fix anything. I am just hoping time is on my side. I have been dealing with it for 10 years. How long can those dogs live? I think a couple have been replaced already.

I have an even worse situation... I like my neighbor... they invite me over for dinner/BBQ around once a month, we share an ally with our garages facing each other and when I come home from work and he and his buddies are having beers in the driveway (construction workers) he offers me a beer. Real nice guy.

I got my house as part of my inheritance (plus I paid my dad some cash) and his significant other was a director for TV/HBO so we have done quite well and houses in the area run from $500K to $1-2M... read a very very very quite neighborhood... birds singing... kids playing in the street and stuff like that.

Well my buddy likes to have poker game in his garage... my bedroom is above my garage facing the ally... these games usually happen Friday nights... I work Saturdays... games sometimes run until two or three AM... he and his friends are very vocal and as the night goes on they get drunk and more vocal... and the play with the garage door open.

And they don't notice or care that while they are screaming at each other at the top of their lungs the rest of the neighborhood is a quite as a church. His girlfriend sleeps over at a friends house when he has these parties.

I have come up with system where piping the classical music radio station off my satellite receiver into my bedroom at a moderate level and having about three fingers of good whiskey allow me to ignore his poker parties. He's a nice guy but he has a short fuse (especially when drunk) so I figure this is not worth the battle that might ensue.

I have thought of emailing his girlfriend "it's nice that you can get away from his poker parties, but have you considered that the rest of the neighborhood doesn't have that luxury?"

I have a neighbor whose son likes to have the odd party. It's not too bad until they get out into the street with a few drinks in them. They talk (yell?) so much louder when they've had a few.

I agree on just getting a couple of beers and going to have a chat with your neighbor. He complied the one time you ask. This will give a chance to see if he is a reasonable individual before you escalate things.

I've only ever had one bad neighbor. This was in Berkeley during grad school, we were renting the upstairs from the owners, our friends, who lived in the downstairs. The neighbor to our north was a b*tchy woman who had feuds going with all the neighbors. She got angry about the clothes washer/dryer (it was outside), any sort of music, cats entering her yard, everything. She was always calling the police, also accusing everyone of code violations, and claiming racism (she was black). I think she was borderline deranged. She didn't bother me personally - she was scared of me after a couple of encounters - but would curse at my friends who were mild non-assertive types. Eventually she got her due. The police realized she was a wacko. Our friends put X10 cameras around the property, whenever she called the police out, the officers would come over to our place and watch the latest time-stamped video of her screaming at our house, throwing things at it, trespassing on our property, etc. All the neighbors started filing complaints about her. She started getting arrested, then the district attorney prosecuted her, finally the terms of her sentence basically required her to be as meek and quiet as a mouse. End of problem.

Otherwise, my neighbors have all be good to great. Kids play with their kids, they come over for drinks and dinner, etc. Just came back from pizza and beer tonight with my neighbor to the west. I told him we've going to have some big trees trimmed, he told me he was glad because they've been dropping branches near his car, he's going to take care of our bonsai while we're gone and will have his gardener mow our yard during the absence, just the usual neighborly cooperation and consideration. I like it.

The family next door to my parents are really nuts. The dad has died - blamed on us. The property markers were incorrectly set and gave us 5 additional feet of property - unusable- of theirs. This was in the 80's, they took it upon themselves to remove a fence and destroy part of the solar panels and pipes that heat out pool. They never showed in court and due to squatters rights, we were awarded the property. The mom and sons don't get along and have wicked screaming matches and arguments that spill onto the street. The daughter is wacko as well. Many years ago, I was playing the stereo kinda loud and she decided to throw rocks at our solar panels. When I was even younger, a dead rabbit the was chopped in half ended up in our yard. No one, but them, could have done that. I was routinely yelled at while playing in the cul-du-sac.

Lately, he videotapes all of us, calls the parking police to ticket cars 18" + from the curb. The street has a nice bend in it and it is hard to actually comply. The son is the only one left in the house. He collects trash from around the city - he says he is cleaning up, but leaves it in his yard. The other week, I was about to leave my parents and he comes screaming up the hill in his truck. I waited until he should have been in his garage, but he decided to come back down the street and tell me never to get in my car and leave when he is out. He also threatened me at the time and I spent the next 20 minutes yelling at him and almost ending his life. The whole street has issues with him, as well as some neighbors near by. The police have a file the size of a novel, but can't do anything.

I have never had so much hatred for one person. I could go on an on, but Wayne does not have enough disk space...

Dave

I'm unusually blessed with great neighbors. My entire neighborhood was built in '63 on an old farm, and most have been here the whole time. We still live in "the Green's house" as far as most are concerned, and we have been here 21 years. But we have finally been accepted by the "old guard".

Anyway, we did have one bad neighbor family for about ten years. The house behind us, over our fence and hedge, was occupied by a family the whole neighborhood refered to as the "Bundies" after the Married with Children family. Oldest daughter hitting on guys in the neighborhood, only son with an adult record before he was one, youngest daughter pregnant at 15, wife banging boyfriends in the back yard when hubby was on the road, drunken all night parties with the stereo turned up to "11", etc. And a dog running loose, tearing up my yard (and others)...

So I tried the "six pack" approach. Billy "Bundy" was a great guy. Very appologetic. "Never happen again..." kind of stuff. It always happened again. I finally shot his dog, which really seemed to upset him. So he came over to kick my ass. That didn't go so well for him either. We were best friends after that, at least as far as he was concerned, and we never had any more trouble. He never got another dog. He finally moved out a couple of years ago, and all is quiet once again. Be very thankful if you have good neighbors.

"i finally shot his dog" too damn funny!(probably wasnt at the time) oh man first one i read and coffee went flying! jeez thought i had some clown neighbors! WOW! i almost shot two rottweilers that were attacking horses/kids/people/my kids/my friends/other adults/animal control etc.

guy was employee of local news station. this went on and on and on. animal control said "shoot-'em", cops said "shoot-'em", friends told me to put anti-freeze in water dish etc etc.

being a bonifide dog person and having a 2 safes full of guns, being somewhat reasonable in mind and spirit, i reasoned that it wasnt the dogs that were *********s.......it was the owners that trained them.

with that in mind, and az. law stating all animals must be contained on property (fence) and there was no fencing, or when in public they must be leashed.

tried to reason w/this clown, that didnt work, strike 1 and 2. strike 3 after dogs burst thru my cheesy fencing one day and attacked my electrician friend. strike 3. told clown i have CCW, if dogs attack or come on property as per state law, i will shoot dogs. his reply (just insert billy bob redneck here).........."IM A GONNA SHOOT YOU!

with that brilliant line cops called again. cops said "shoot the dogs"!

one day son goes down on mini bike to get mail. im standing outside watching for rottweilers. rottweilers chase him. clown comes out points Hi-power rifle on son and scopes him!!!

I FLIP OUT! call cops. man w/gun pointing at my kid drunk(he was outside drinking prior w/amigoes), cops arrive. my springfield M1-A SUPER DUPER MATCH(factory) has one in pipe, .45 has one in pipe and stuffed behind back. cops nail him and haul him off. said he was only checking out scope for deer season(it was august) he next gets restraining order against me, i get one against him.

dogs continue to chase everyone. animal control called 21 times. things are tense. cops called 17 times.

finally light bulb goes off.............call his manager and the prez. of channel 15 ABC affiliate, told both of them if i hear those dogs so much as fart, i am going to every news station there is w/all the documentation of whats occurred and having them run nice little story about there competition and how family oriented their station ISNT!

guy gets FIRED.........FOR SALE SIGN GOES ON HOUSE! PROBLEM SOLVED!

i cant tell you how many times i almost DID SHOOT THOSE DOGS! i mean weapon drawn/round in pipe/safety off/trigger finger twitching!

all i could see in my mind was headlines "cave creek man shoots 2 violent rottweilers and then gets involved in firefight" "cave creek man wins firefight due to overwhelming FIREPOWER"!

what a damn nightmare that was.
