Matteo's GT40 at CMP

What an awesome car! I had the opportunity to instruct for the Mustang Club at CMP this weekend and Matteo brought out the big gun...wow. Redline in 2nd gear 100mph. This car is razor sharp on track and requires full concentration to extract it's best.

Friday the track was dry and lot's of open track, Saturday was very damp and the first half of Sunday rained hard. Late in the afternoon Sunday the track dried out and the real fun began.

My son was commenting that flames shot out the back as we shifted on the front straight  . What a cool car, thanks for bringing it to the track Matteo!

Nice car. Even nicer tape job

Jon Merck 06-05-2007 06:05 AM

The tape job didn't last long...tried some clear sheets and they kept blowing off, so ended up going naked :D

bigchillcar 06-05-2007 06:14 AM

what tires is matteo running on it?

Jon Merck 06-05-2007 06:23 AM

I can't remember, maybe he will chime in. They were fairly grippy for streets though...we had to play with the pressures to keep the rear planted out of corners. We did find that 550 ftlbs of torque can break the tires loose at 80mph in a straight line :)

azasadny 06-05-2007 07:12 AM

Whatever happened to Matteo's 911?

Tervuren 06-05-2007 07:36 AM

Odd, that doesn't look like any Ford GT40 I've ever seen, nor does the motor match. You sure its a GT40? I'd have a hard time imagining someone cutting up a Ford GT40 to look like a retro replica of one.

jorian 06-05-2007 07:40 AM

Its not a GT40. Its a GT.

Jon Merck 06-05-2007 07:44 AM

I stand corrected!

thrown_hammer 06-05-2007 07:59 AM

Park it in my garage and you can call it Sally for all I care!

the 06-05-2007 10:04 AM

Those cars look good in pictures, but are awesome in person. So cool.

What happened to your passenger side mirror in the last pic?

tsinger873 06-05-2007 12:01 PM

I doubt anyone who would go to the bother of taping the whole car would run it hard enough to extract anything from it. There's nothing like being the laughing stock of the paddock. He better keep it in the garage from now on.

Gogar 06-05-2007 12:25 PM

Yeah what a tool for trying to keep his car nice.

tsinger873 06-05-2007 12:26 PM

Keep it nice until he stuffs it into a wall. Let's get a picture of that too.

I think you've got some reading to do around the forums

tsinger873 06-05-2007 12:43 PM

To find out what an excellent driver he is? Crap happens on the track all the time to drivers of every ability. Wait until somebody takes him out or a mechanical failure takes him off of the track. What is the tape going to protect his car from? Bugs? Acid rain? I would expect some sandblasting effects if he raced it in a series with a track full of cars but a few pristine cars running around a track wont damage his paint. Some fool with brake fade might.

boba 06-05-2007 01:27 PM

I guess you can tell who has never been anywhere but OT.

tsinger873 06-05-2007 04:33 PM

so whats your point?

Jon Merck 06-05-2007 05:11 PM

These cars are special, and trying to protect it from sandblasting is just common sense. CMP is very sandy and will destroy a paint job in short order. I would have taped her up and if anybody in the paddock or elsewhere didn't like they could kiss my a$$.

kstar 06-05-2007 06:30 PM

Another "laugher" for the paddock!

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1181097038.jpg

Guess who's driving . . .

jorian 06-05-2007 08:25 PM

I think that's Shumi behind the wheel. Up on 3! Guess he hasn't seen this thread.....

Nader 06-05-2007 08:58 PM

The tape job is pretty damn funny. It looks like the owner can barely afford the car. Probably not true, but just looks that way.

Do you ever care to keep things, or do you not care where your shopping cart rolls around your car? I've seen some people leave it on the high side of a car, then turn their backs, and it smacks their car, and its not like they care. If thats your attitude, well...

That track is VERY sandy, you won't believe how much sticks to the tires, it sounds like you are going mudding when you back off and let things cool down. Would I tape my car up? No, it already has its scars from the past owners, but if someone wants to make an effort on keeping a nice looking car good looking - while taking it out and driving it, no complaints from me.

Tervuren 06-05-2007 10:12 PM

Here is a shot of a tire without any cool down lap before coming in. Also, you can be following behind someone on a track day, and if the track isn't swept clear, and they move off the most driven area - you can throw up quite the cloud(more so if they touch off track for sure!) This picture was taken on a paved section - and the car had not pulled through the grass or off the road at the time of me taking the photo.

thrown_hammer 06-06-2007 05:14 AM

Laugh all you want, that car is sweet. For the record if I took a limited run $150K car to the track I would tape the crap out of it too.

On another note did we ever find out where the passenger mirror went?

VaSteve 06-06-2007 05:18 AM

The tape job sure it funny looking but the haters on the this thread are something else. Matteo is a nice guy and I'm quite sure he can afford the car and the repairs, but why repair when you can protect.

That must have taken a long time, however.

David 06-06-2007 07:19 AM

Very nice! There was one at a track day down here, unfortunately the driver was very slow.

Condoms make your johnson look funny too, so you probably shouldn't use them either :D.

Jon Merck 06-06-2007 07:27 AM

Well the mirror was a result of a garage incident :O, I imagine it is being repaired as we type, unfortunate but stuff happens.

And yes, Matteo is a great guy, most people with these kind of cars are afraid to use them hard, I applaud anyone for finding out the reason these cars are special. I am also thankful I was able to experience such a car, because odds are I will never afford one.

BTW, Matteo did a very good job of extracting the limits from this car...

Care to post *your* times? SmileWavy

I'm the last person to tape my car (except for headlight covers held on by tape as I drive my car to/from the track), but no reason to get pissy...

kaisen 06-06-2007 07:33 AM

BTW, my original comment 'nice tape job' was not meant to imply that nose protection wasn't important on the track. But Blue 3M painter's tape, you have to admit, is pretty funny.

Motion used the permanent clear 3M Scotchcal on his Ferrari 360CS and I think he said it was a few thousand bucks, but worth protecting the paint.

Do you track your car?

Blue painter's tape is SOP in the paddock.

http://nostatic.com/photos/sts2.jpg

well, I obviously don't use very much :p

I'd try to keep it nice too, and I give him huge kudos for running it on the track at all.

It's not like we're talking about a disposable Cayman here....

boba 06-06-2007 07:46 AM

Not only at the track, but it can be used for a canyon run. Not a bad idea.

Why not just do the entire car in blue painter's tape?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1181145212.jpg

Jon Merck 06-06-2007 08:02 AM

I was racers tape...left a little residue but not bad.

If you regularly track an investment quality car, just have permanent 3M or Llumar invisible protective film applied by a professional. Looks good, protects well, and won't fly off and clog someone elses oil cooler duct.

Protecting the headlights is one thing, but covering dozens of square feet with the blue stuff is funny.

If I were caught at the track with no protection, I'd use whatever would work, including painter's tape. I understand.
