V1 as radar detector detector
Has anyone had the experience of a car infront or behind you with what I can only assume is a cheap detector setting off your V1. I've had it a couple of times. Yes, I get the Infiniti SUVs setting off my laser. Man, that really sucks, but I'm mostly talking about regular radar being set off by other detectors. No wonder cops can detect most other detectors. I'm amazed that those make it into the public without the FCC *****ing.

You and me both. I get more false alarms than I really care for. In general I disregard all X and K warnings around town here (I know for a fact the PD uses Ka band). Elsewhere I'd respond to all threats on any band. I suppose if I were really motivated I could reprogram it to only report Ka contacts, but then I'd end up forgetting on an out-of-town trip or something and screw myself. Better to leave it as-is and mentally just have to think "X contact - I can disregard here" once in a while.

My cellphone will cause my V1 to go off with an X band warning when I loose signal.

It could also be a car with so-called adaptive cruise control, the kind that uses radar to maintain a set distance between your car & the car in front.
And GM SUV brake lights set off my V1 laser alert when I am behind them at stop signs/lights.

I had an issue with a Infiniti SUV behind me, he had that adaptive cruise control that adjusts the cars speed to the one in front of it. It used short laser bursts to find the speed of the car ahead of it. (that would be me out in front) It seemed like it checked every 3-5 seconds.
Once I let him in front of me and followed my V1 calmed back down and so did I. ![]()

But some of the other vehicles that have set if off while behind me (not laser, but some of the other RF bands) have been old clunkers and 80's and 90's regular old cars. Not cars with adaptive cruise. I'm pretty sure it's been other radar detectors. I know that they sometime Xmit because I work for a company that provides satellite communications and we had a guy once park in a bad spot with hit radar detector that caused interference with one of our dishes.

I would get GM brake lites setting off my laser warning also. My EFI ECU set it off all the time. So I shut off the laser part of the detector. The laser part is sorta useless anyway. IMO

I have gotten a couple of valid laser hits. I think I've been saved twice by the laser warning. I also think that there have been 4 or 5 times that I got hit by laser that I would have been screwed if I hadn't been going the speed limit or close enough. Still, if it helps sometimes....

I turn my V1 off while I'm driving in town and only turn it on when I'm on the Interstate. Too many false alarms in town. The V1 has already paid for itself and I bought it in March 2007!

![]() I was lurking on an LEO board once, and one guy was bragging about how he took a radar gun with him once, on a vacation. While driving down the highway in his personal car, he delighted in shooting (radar) at motorists he saw using detectors. Claimed one guy was so incensed, that after hitting the silence button several times while in traffic, eventually ripped the unit off the windshield. He also seemed to enjoy the time he periodically kept zapping a guy who was trying to pass a line of trucks. Every time the guy sped up to make the pass, he'd zap him. The guy would brake and abort the pass. Gave himself big *****s and giggles doing that.

It's been said a million times and I'll say it again - it's all about the money. The day a government service (like police protection) started thinking it had to be profitable is the day the meaning of the phrase "to protect and serve" changed. It used to mean "protect and serve" the populace. Now all too often it means "protect and serve" the coffers and the interests of the corrupt politicians that pull the department strings. Truly sad. Most cops are dedicated, although sadly, they're also very easily manipulated.
