What did your grandfather carry for personal protection?

My paternal grandfather had a small 32 revolver, marked "Young American". My uncle has it now. My maternal grandfather had a .455 Webley revolver. I don't know which of his heirs swiped it.

To my knowledge, the only thing he ever carried were his two massive hands, could drop a quarter through his wedding ring. He never owned a firearm in his life, doubt he ever even touched one.

The only dangerous thing I can remember my grandfather caring was a cigar.

My Grandpa didn't need no stinkin guns to defend himself with...he had quick fists that hit like sledge hammers, he once took on 6 rough tough Polack/Russian guys at once in a Biergarten in Detroit (1920s) and knocked them out. The Judge fined the 6, $50 apiece for starting the fight, and let my Gradpa go.

Grandpa did have a number of guns to hunt with though.

My grandfather never carried anything. Man had forearms like tree trunks.

I know that he put someone in the hospital when they tried to break into his car. He chased him down and beat him badly. He was 52 at the time.

Grampa Chris, a big, gruff Danish man with hands like bear paws, was a bush pilot in SW Montana. Loved guns, but not handguns. Rifles. There are no stories of how he handled guys that were willing to take him on. Nobody was.

My grandfather (Dad's side) generally carried a whiskey bottle and a pen to write bad checks with.

Both my grandfathers fought for the Germans in WWII. Neither survived. I would not recommend whatever they carried for personal protection.

One grandfather did carry something, but he was a member of the Nazi party in Germany. I'm pretty sure I don't want to know what he had.

The other one had guns but never carried them around. In fact, he didn't seem to like them, based on what my mom and her sisters said. I wouldn't even know he had them were it not for the fact that they said he did...

Two guys to NOT get into a handshake contest with:

* Guys who manually milk dozens of cows daily and
* Sheet Metal Worker journeymen. These guys cut metal with scissors for a living.

My Granddad caught the tail end of WW1 but wasn't shipped overseas. He became a sheriff in the 20's and carried a 38 special.
