Funny to me that ANYONE, even his wife, would defend Mr Edwards. He is almost a caricature of a personal injury attorney, with a nice haircut.

Yes, we are very frightened of Ms. Coulter. Her integrity alone is intimidating. A regular female Walter Cronkite. One of the great political mysteries is why she has not yet announced her candidacy for President.

Ann will wipe the floor with pretty boy Edwards wife...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"It debases political dialogue," Edwards said. "It drives people away from the process. We can't have a debate about issues if you're using this kind of language."
Coulter responded with a laugh and charged that Edwards was calling on her to stop speaking altogether. She questioned why Elizabeth Edwards was making a phone call on behalf of her husband, and she criticized John Edwards for "stealing doctors' money" during his successful career as a trial lawyer.
"I don't think I need to be told to stop writing by Elizabeth Edwards, thank you," Coulter said.
On ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday, Coulter was asked about a March speech in which she used a gay slur to refer to Edwards.
"If I'm going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I'll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot," Coulter said Monday, picking up on remarks made by HBO's Bill Maher. Maher suggested in March that "people wouldn't be dying needlessly" if Vice President Dick Cheney had been killed in an insurgent attack in Afghanistan.
I'd like to see Ann try to pick the pocket of the grandpa in Thom's post.
Now that would be entertaining.
Good on Ann. The little ambush Matthews tried to set up backfired and the hypocrisy of the left (and the MSM) is more noticeable than ever.
Note that Mrs Edwards isn't quite so vocal about debasing political dialogue when it comes to her own husband's staff. Try googling Amanda Marcotte and Holy Spirit:
Even that bastion of left wing reporting, the NYT, reported:
"Two bloggers hired by John Edwards to reach out to liberals in the online world have landed his presidential campaign in hot water for doing what bloggers do — expressing their opinions in provocative and often crude language....The two women brought to the Edwards campaign long cyber trails in the incendiary language of the blogosphere. Other campaigns are likely to face similar controversies as they try to court voters using the latest techniques of online communication.
Ms. Marcotte wrote in December that the Roman Catholic Church’s opposition to the use of contraception forced women “to bear more tithing Catholics.” In another posting last year, she used vulgar language to describe the church doctrine of the virgin birth of Jesus.
She has also written sarcastically about the news media coverage of the three Duke lacrosse players accused of sexual assault, saying: “Can’t a few white boys sexually assault a black woman anymore without people getting all wound up about it? So unfair.”
Quotes are from the New York Times 2/7/07.
I (a self-described moderate-conservative) have watched Hardball for the last 7-8 years, and I don't see Matthews as a lefty. Sure he's a Dem, having worked for Carter, but he does a reasonably good job of not slanting his interviews. The exception is the war, where, like most people, he's just frustrated as hell at the lack of accountability and black hole of human and financial loss.
I thought it was beneath Matthews to have Coulter on. I read her occasionally and am entertained, but she's in the Coulter business, not the politics or analysis business. She could not answer a single political question substantively last night.
Here's my point:
I cringed when Coulter responded to Elizabeth Edwards. As much as I think her husband is a labor-coddling hack with his "Two Americas" crap, he and his family deserve to be treated with common decency. They do not deserve to have their deceased small child brought back and used as ammunition by Coulter to sell books. It's not right, at least in the world I inhabit.
I respectfully disagree. IMO Matthews is a disgusting media hack with obvious left leaning views who has all the decency of a slug. Please note he didn't interview Mrs. Edwards and then have Ann Coulter call her up- much less bring up the earlier indiscretions of Edwards staff.
He set this up because (a) he wanted ratings and (b) he knew it would be a controversial slugfest that would increase (a) and (c) it fit in with his leftist agenda- sabotage Coulter and make her look like an idiot.
As to your second point I agree Coulter goes over the line. My point is that her remarks are comparable to and no worse than espoused by the left wing hacks out there- who are more numerous and who can be even more vulgar in their remarks than Ms. Coulter. The umbrage expressed by Mr. Matthews, the media and Mrs. Edwards is one sided to say the least.
As to bringing up dead babies Edwards- and his wife- are fair game. Edwards actually stated that a dead child spoke through him during one his many lawsuits. How much lower can you get?
Further, if his wife wants to play in the political arena- and call up Coulter on national TV- after obviously arranging this stunt beforehand- and remain married to an individual I consider pure scum- anything is fair game with her too.
The simple fact is their dead child can be used by Coulter- or anyone- in the same way Edwards used other dead children- for monetary gain.
Why is it that everyone is ignoring one obvious fact? Coulter is an entertainer, part of her act is shock value. This is not a new concept, yet every time she says something "shocking" people get wound up about it. If Howard Stern took an interest in politics, would he end up the topic on Hardball?
Edwards, on the other hand, is not. Edwards is running for president. Though his occupation makes it painfully obvious that morals are not the cornerstone of his campaign, shouldn't he, and his wife, be held to a higher moral standard? Oh wait, I forgot, morals and personal responsibility are bad words these days.
A sidenote regarding the ambulance chaser, did anyone else think it was f-ed up that he continued the campaign, despite his wife's potentially fatal condition? "We made the decision together". BS.
Sidenote #2, the Catholic comment. You want to talk about media bias? The ONLY place I heard mention of those blogger's comments was talk radio. Now if Bush had made a comment about black people, holy hell........ Obviously it made the NYT, but it was kept very much quiet.
How can Edwards be President if he has to send his wife to do his battles? Sounds like the campaign cash cow is not producing enough milk!
How sad that so many defend Ann. Most of the opiners, left and right do more to destroy the things they say they stand for. It really is unfortunate that brilliant minds cannot find common ground and work from there to do something positive.
Why can they not concentrate in a constructive way on issues rather than personal attacks? What does this say about their moral compasses? How can one speak of being, for example, in favor of a society based on Christain values and then engage in behavior that contradicts those very tenets?
I wish I could understand.
How can Coulter attack Edwards using his dead son? The list of 'how can Coulters...' is long and ugly.
They are not trying to make the world a better place, they are trying to make money Bob.
Mathews set it up for ratings, Madame Edwards is in it to get her husband some pub(try and make him appear more human, less reptilian. Ann Coulter is in the business of being Ann Coulter, obnoxious as Michael Savage or Rush, almost.
There are a lot of people will hear about it, so it is a win-win-win. situation for all involved.
I normally stay far away from politics, but I happened to catch Ann, and a replay of her clip on one of the financial channels last night. I'm sorry, but her behavior (shock value or not) is indefensible, and it doesn't matter what other idiots on the far left may do. Good, decent people just don't behave like that imo. Unfortunately, during my foray into TV land, they also showed a brief clip of Paris H. right after the bit on Ann, and I thought to myself that both of them were playing the same game and had about the same amount of class.
Privately both Edwards and his wife have beseeched Ms. Coulter to continue the attacks and use more dead babies:
The Hill
Edwards camp again turns to cash cow Coulter
By Klaus Marre
June 27, 2007
With the second quarter drawing to a close, the presidential campaign of former North Carolina senator John Edwards (D) on Wednesday again turned to one of its most reliable “fundraisers,” Ann Coulter.
In an e-mail to supporters, Edwards’ wife Elizabeth described why she called in to MSNBC’s “Hardball” Tuesday. The show featured the conservative pundit, who has often attacked Edwards.
This week Coulter proclaimed “If I’m going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I'll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot.”
Elizabeth Edwards said she decided to call the show to appeal to Coulter to stop the attacks.
“I told her these kinds of personal attacks lower our political dialogue at precisely the time when we need to raise it, and set a bad example for our children,” she said. “How did she respond? Sadly, perhaps predictably, with more personal attacks.”
The e-mail is coupled with an appeal for campaign donations.
“Please give what you can right now to help raise the dialogue and show that Ann Coulter-style politics will never carry the day,” Mrs. Edwards wrote.
It is the second time in as many quarters that the Edwards campaign is using Coulter for a fundraising appeal. In March, the 2004 Democratic vice presidential candidate raised “Coulter cash” after the right-wing pundit called the senator a “******.”
I though Matthews did a pretty good job back in the 90's when Clinton was impeached. Since then he's swung back to the left and settled in comfortably there.
Here's an exchange he had with his own audience who wouldn't get with the AC hater campaign:
MATTHEWS: Welcome back to "Hardball." We're back at the "Hardball" plaza with the inimitable Ann Coulter.
(Applause)
MATTHEWS: And what deeply concerns me, more than the very existence of Ann Coulter, is the presence of many like-minded people here.
(Applause)
MATTHEWS: My God, is this "Deliverance"?
Nice objectivity - comparing Coulter fans to Deliverance cast members.
Hey, I can take a joke, but I hope no one believes that "Hardball" Matthews is objective.
The only reason AC said the above quote is because the Libs did not have a problem when Bill Mayer said he wanted Cheney to die in a terrorist attack. Therefore,she stated "well then, If I’m going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I'll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot.”
