The folks who started up America were escaping rule by the monarchy and the Church of England. This is one reason that they so strongly believed and stressed in writing that the Government should not interfere with the freedom of or from religion . . . and that both Government and "Religion" would be corrupted by this intermingling. If you read a little deeper you will see this is a major topic of Jefferson's and other founders' writings and that I am not just making this up!

The Founding Father's were also "deists" and not "theists". They were products of the Enlightenment movement which was based on reason, critical thinking and science. A deist does believe in a god, but does not accept, like the theist, that god plays an active role performing miracles and other supernatural acts.

I am not arguing that Christianity played a major role in drafting the early documents of this Country, nor I have ever made such an argument. The point that you and many other religious folks is missing is that Jefferson and crew had a good reason (England!) why they strongly wanted to keep the practice or non-practice of religion free and to keep religion separate from government.

This should be self-evident to anyone that simply reads a little history, what the Founding Dudes actually wrote, and stop listening to the talking heads (all of them!) who have an agenda.

FWIW.

Best,

Kurt
Yes but they never intended it to exclude Christianity if anything they wanted to protect it. They never envisioned Liberal democrats using it to promote Islam in our public schools while expelling children who say Christan prayers in class.

YES they did, precisely and in clear language, intend to exclude Christianity and ANY other religion from "State" affairs -> which includes public schools!

From Jefferson's writings (I have only studied him the most) he clearly intended for government, despite it's founding on Judeo-Christian beliefs, to allow the free practice of any religion in America and that no person would be judged, or that person's position in society be diminished, by the government for such beliefs. BUT, that church and state remain separate. This we can be certain, IMO.

I would have to agree with you on the mess in schools these days. There are many unfortunate things happening, IMO, regarding this newfound favoritism of Islam in schools. This is exactly the problem folks like Jefferson were worried about.

In this case, these same folks who quote Jefferson as wanting to keep church and state separate are teaching Islam in school. Neither Islam, nor Christianity nor any other religions belong in public schools. That's what the founding fathers were afraid of and tried to protect against.

Nothing wrong with folks paying to take religious classes in college or going to religious private schools.

In this regard, we can agree. I think the biggest problem in public schools is the NEA, but that's another thread.

Best,

Kurt

I didn't post pictures of my g/f (now fiancee) asking, "is this a 10?"

Mine was a bad joke and everybody knows it. Yours was serious.

So which is really tasteless? Or better yet, which one is more pathetic?

But I'm done with this. You're either a great troll or one of the most clueless individuals I've ever come across. And that's saying something...after all, I work in academia.

The only prayer I believe in is, "Dear God, please protect me from your followers".

This place reaffirms everything about why I can't stand religion and overly-religious types. And why I could care less about the nature of whatever higher power there might or might not be. It doesn't affect me or my life, so I really don't give a crap.

There you go assuming that Christianity has the patent on morality.

Most of those core values existed long before Christianity was invented.

Cool! So is my eldest daughter. Then again I was open minded enough to allow both of my girls to explore spirituality in their own way. Who am I to make that decision for them? Let me guess Peoni...You were raised in a Christian family. Guess you're just lucky. Man! think how close you were to being Islamic or.....Sikh.

Yeah...they crack me up too....

EXCEPT I AM SO GODDAMN SICK OF COLLECTIVE INTOLERANCE - NO WONDER THE WORLD IS SO F..CKED UP!!!

Yes I AM yelling!!!

Look, all of you - for God's sake (yes I believe)...what happened to live and let live???

Between this and the "is there a God" thread I now have full and utter understanding as to why the world can and never will be a peaceful place (I knew that already - didn't need the confirmation but thanks anyway).

It's about time we ALL accept we do not believe the same things, or have the same faith.

I frankly do not care whether you are Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, agnostic or atheist...whether you worship a rock or a cow...or indeed a God. If you have morals and kindness then you are welcome in my home. If you try to ram your ideas down my throat or any one else in my home then I'll throw you out.

I have many friends whose beliefs differ from mine. They are no "less" in my eyes. I can debate the opposite view politically with many friends too - they are entitled to their views just as I am to mine. I RESPECT them...I just don't agree with them that's all. But as we (almost) always have very civil debates (depends on the booze consumed of course) I always learn something new.

Of course, I can decide not to read these threads can't I...ignorance is bliss, right? However, when the debate is good I quite enjoy reading the differing views and opinions. Again, I don't need to agree...

Tony - you need to open your eyes some. I'm sorry, but your attitude here needs some moderating. Your Christian belief should teach you that tolerance is tantamount. Does "turn the other cheek" and "love thy neighbour" not mean anything anymore?
