How many atheists on the BB?

Maybe this will put a end to the ridiculous "Is there a God" thread. The liberal moderators of this forum are so inclined to keep it going (No surprise there). So atheist identify yourself!

Paul K 07-04-2007 10:31 AM

Sure. I'm an atheist.

bt1211 07-04-2007 10:34 AM

add me.

I wish I wasn't but I dont like the taste of Koolaid

zuffen 07-04-2007 11:04 AM

I am.

johnco 07-04-2007 11:06 AM

I used to think I was an atheist. but since so many here keep insisting that atheism is a religion, I quit this also.

Shame!!!
Come on, I know this place is full of Christ haters be it for the fact they genuinely dont believe or that their life style choice is not inline with the church.

nostatic 07-04-2007 11:23 AM

ur funny

Z-Man (ie one of the moderators) is Christian

I am a Buddhist, but used to be a practicing Catholic, and believe in a higher power.

Have a joyous day! And remember that an open mind and open heart are two of the most important things in life. :)

Moneyguy1 07-04-2007 11:38 AM

Todd:

Well said. There are no absolutes and no measurable proof either way so the best alternative is to keep an open mind.

johnco 07-04-2007 12:00 PM

you don't have to be a believer to be a good person. I'd bet I live a more honest and rightous way of life than most of those sitting in church every day. I believe in a higher power. maybe a 289 or a 302 for my 61 Ranchero I bought this weekend instead of the old 6 cylinder

tonypeoni 07-04-2007 12:05 PM

Thats fine but lets keep this stuff personal. Yes by even mentioning the fact that your a nonbeliever youve offended 25/30% of the BB that are believers.

Moneyguy1 07-04-2007 12:06 PM

A priest frind of mine agrees, John. He says that we will not be judged by the number of times our butt sits in a pew but how we treat others. And, as he points out, his statement does not in any way say that the judging would be done by God. We are judged every day by others.

tonypeoni 07-04-2007 12:08 PM

Why debate a thread like "Is there a God?". I honestly think most of the posters soul intention is to agitate this very touchy subject. I have no respect for that.

It is impossible for a nonbeliever who does not accept Christ has his savor to ascend to heaven. You mentioned priest so I take it your Christian I cant speak for other religions in this respect.

If someone is so insecure in their beliefs that a thread on a bbs is a threat to them...well, then I think there are bigger issues.

Was Jesus "offended" by someone mentioning they were a non-believer?

Im not insecure in my belief but it hurts me to see my faith openly attacked.

I hope so, since my butt and a pew have been mutually exclusive since my Catholic Prep days.:)

I like your priest friend, which only reaffirms my Tip O'Neill analogy: all religions are local.

I am not an atheist by any standard, I simply believe that all faiths, removed from the extremes, are generally seeking the same ends. I also never question another's choice of faith...or lack of faith. The best people I know extend the same courtesy.

Be excellent to each other ;)

Moneyguy1 07-04-2007 12:24 PM

TOny:

I respect all people who have an honest belief and do not use this belief to hammer others into submission. My sincere belief is that many religions may have part of the picture but none have it all. For one who reads the New Testament there is a passage that states something about Heaven having many mansions. Perhaps this means there are many different paths and different ways to get there.

Would a Creator deny an afterlife to anyone who was simply a good person? Would Heaven be that exclusive a club? To me that makes little sense for a loving Creator. And, the fact so many people think they are right and everyone is wrong is the reason that I separate the concept of religion from faith. Man created the first and as such, it has flaws.

I am not an athiest because to me it is the same as being a fundamentalist. It is a belief system in that an athiest denies the existence of a Creator as strongly as fundamental believers say that the Creator exists. The proof is in the root of the word "athiest" (against God). Agnostics are at least unsure and wise enough to understand that the issue is beyond the mind of man to resolve in a certain manner that can be measured and verified. I can respect that standpoint and understand it. I respect my athiest brethern, but the concept and why it is so strongly supported by some elude me. There seems to be a touch of fear in the denial.

HardDrive 07-04-2007 12:33 PM

Ok, I'm an atheist.

I guess 'not really interested in talking about childish voodoo crap' would be a better description than 'atheist'.

I try and maintain a defensible moral philosophy in the way I live my life, but after the 3rd glass of Merlot, that seems to go out the window. Especially if the bar maid has a nice rack.

You have an interesting way of keeping this issue personal.

And, no one has forced those debating the existence of God here at PPOT to do so.

If you or anyone else is offended that some one else doesn't believe in the same religion or the same god or is an atheist, then I truly feel sorry for the frailty and closed mindedness of such folks.

It's a big world out there, and most folks don't believe in your god or your religion. Sorry if this is news to you.

Best,

Kurt

P.S.: We already have a "God" thread, so maybe we can take this there?

WolfeMacleod 07-04-2007 12:37 PM

I'm going to stir the pot and say that I am Wiccan.

But, I don't feel the Christ-believers should be offended. I do believe that Christ existed. I believe he was a great teacher of man. He did great things, sure. Son of God? Who knows...

If I'm not offended by you, you shoulnd't be offended by me. :)

Porsche-O-Phile 07-04-2007 12:39 PM

Pretty much. I do believe there are things out there greater than ourselves and that there is a side of all living things that is "spiritual", but I don't believe in a "god" per se - certainly not in the sense that conventional religions try to portray or claim to have a monopoly on the understanding of.

Well, I'm certainly not a racknostic...

nostatic 07-04-2007 12:46 PM

I'm more of a buttist than racknostic, but that's just me...

Izze 07-04-2007 12:47 PM

Well, science has not ruled out god yet...so i'm agnostic in the meantime.

Nor has science ruled out the existence of the fabled FSM! . . . which is why I am FSM agnostic in the meantime.

:)

Best,

Kurt

Tony,

I admire your faith. Hang in there.

Because your religion is the correct one?

Exactly the problem with organized religion.

I wonder how many people died in the 200 yrs of Crusades?

I'm not defending either, I'm condemning both.

Why dont you save yourself some time instead of wasting it on the BB. Just fore go this online B.S. fly over to Afghanistan and join a terrorist camp. You can follow in the foot steps of John Walker. You seem to share most of his beliefs.

Moneyguy1 07-04-2007 01:48 PM

Wow. And therein is the problem.

Intolerance for any philosophy that differs from our own.

Why is Terry wrong to post his thoughts and Tony right? That in itself would make a great debate.

And honestly..Why not compare world religions? They have all had their share of "misadventures".
