I raced RC for a year, was really good at it, then I bought my 944, and well, the costs of insurance for a teenage just killed any funds for racing. I may get back into it. I was quick, real quick, people would come over to look at my car, and surprised to find a completely stock unmodified not super duper powered or lightweight car.

i laughed at the comment about 'we/he will enjoy it'. my 3yr old has several RC airplanes which i kindly assemble and fly for his enjoyment

Mostly dirt and carpet oval all over Indiana. Started building .40 airplanes and lost interest. Still have a bunch of it I can't let go of. Good times.

Ahh the memories, up all night tuning and painting the car for Saturday's big race. Winters with the RC12 indoors and Summers with the 10L outdoors. Spent way too much time and money on it with my girlfriend's (now wife) cousins and uncle.

Yes, you can spend a small fortune on RC racing. My son and I have been at it together for almost ten years, since he was seven or eight. Our current cars are both Associated Nitro TC3's. He runs an O.S. ROAR legal .12 two cycle in his; I normally run another ROAR legal .12, from RB Concept. Either spins up well over 35,000 rpm. The cars are four wheel drive, and have very sophisticated suspensions, fully adjustable in any way. Caster, camber, toe, damping rates, spring rates, ride height, everything. They run a two speed transmission with a centrifigul clutch controling gear changes, which is also adjustable. The centrifigul clutch on the motor itself is also adjustable for engagement point.

I'm currently experimenting with a four cycle motor in mine. It's also an O.S., derived from their aircraft engines. It started out as a .26, with a rotory single needle carb, and quite restrictive exhaust. I have since bored it up to a .30, added a slide valve twin needle carb, opened up the intake and exhaust ports, and made my own exhaust. It's a little torque monster, easily pulling the higher winding two strokes until they get up on the pipe. And it just sounds amazing; think Ducati superbike among all the four cylinder bikes. Anyway, here are a couple photos:





Unfortunately, it looks like the whole thing has finally started to kind of implode under its own weight. It has gotten far too expensive to race these things. I can take my full scale 911 to a track day for less than it takes to race both of these for a weekend. Tires, fuel, motor wear, broken parts, entry fees, etc. etc. have all skyrocketed in recent years. Racing is all but dead around here right now, with one series limping along in my area. Two major indoor venues (electric cars only, which are actually more expensive to race) have closed in the last six months. The "toy cars" have gotten too expensive. Oh well; it was fun while it lasted.

I bought a Tamiya "Hornet" in Tokyo in the summer of '85.

I still have it in storage with Baja Bug and '55 Chevy bodies plus several sets of wheels/tires.

Word...I had an MRC/Tamiya Hornet. Eventually graduated to a Losi JRX2. No idea where the hell that thing is.

The small one is my first rc car bought in 1975 and it,s a Tamiya 1/10 scale i lost the wing but it still works. The big one is the FG 1/5 scale.

I've been meaning to go home and find my 10L for years now... I remember building battery packs, and splicing multimeters into chargers and all kinds of fun soldering iron projects... never really got good at driving it at the local indoor track though...
