damn! i was assigned babysitting duty for another college intern.

wow.

this kid is 19, and thinks he knows it all. LAZY! all he talks about is;

"will i get busted if i take a 2 hours lunch?'"
"will the cops give me a speeding ticket with my state vehicle?"
"what function key lets me flip off the internet, and onto a worksheet if the boss walks in?"

his personal cellphone went off at lunch yesterday. he told his friend he will call him back later. afterwards, i went by his cube to hand him his next assignment when i heard him tell his friend, "hey, just calling you back. i didnt want to talk to you on my break, so i waited till i can call you back on the clock. that way i can get paid for this call. " (then they had a good laugh)

i am gonna bury him with work.

Getting an internship where I work is harder than getting a job. Good thing to, as the interns are top-notch. A kid like that wouldn't make it past the first round of interviews...

Does he know future employers will ask you for a reference? Pretty clueless.

Yeah kids like that really get on my nerves, not sure what type of work he is doing for you but I would keep him away from the PC.
Introduce him to the fine art of "re-organizing the filing cabinet".

Fortunately I have had some real good interns come through; unfortunately we can never keep them.

It would be very entertaining to have this young fellow in my offices for a few weeks.

In my company we get all kind of "specimens" some are Ok and others are just plain useless... The problem is the we have an agreement with the local schools so we don't get to choose.. we just open the doors to a bunch of kids with absolutely no willing to learn or do anything productive...

One of the interns in my office is on her second year this summer...former High School All State Maryland golfer.

And, no, pics are verboten...her father is a friend of mine, former Navy Commander.

She is just as cool as can be. I lost to her in a 1 vs 1 golf match last year. I'm thinking this year she has a better chance

Problem is, you can't say anything negative about someone on a "reference call" (not legally anyway) or else run the risk of getting sued. All you can do is verify employment dates - and a lot of people damn well know it, especially if they have the potential to claim discrimination based on minority status, gender, whatever. It's a big problem. If they get a good enough lawyer, they can make life VERY uncomfortable for a former employer.

Also consider this scenario (happened at a place my wife used to work) - employee "X" gets let go (the termination was presented to her as a "downsizing" scenario to avoid a confrontation, but the reality was the person had been underperforming, hence the reason for the "downsizing", if you get my drift). When leaving, Employee "X" asked if she could have a reference, which management said they would provide. The former employee immediately turned around and sued the company for wrongful termination, using the fact that management was willing to provide her with a reference as "evidence" that she was a valuable employee that never should have been let go in favor of some other individual. The girl won the case. Scary, but that's where the laws are today.

What happens "off the record" is another story, but it's a very real concern in today's business climate. A former boss of mine told me over a beer once that he'd received a call about a former employee (slacker) by another office. When asked, "can you verify that John Doe worked for you from MM/YY to MM/YY", he paused and said, "I can verify that I had him on my payroll for that period of time, but I can't verify that he WORKED here during that time - draw your own conclusions about what that means". Too funny.

Hope you have a good Internet filter... otherwise he is viewing porn, visiting chartrooms and propositioning teenage girls, uploading viruses on company time.

Worked with a kid like that years ago and all of the above happened.

In the apartment business, there are typically three questions that can be answered with a "yes" or "no":

1) Did they pay rent on time?
2) Did you evict them?

Here's the best "catch all" question-

3) Would you rent to them again?
