ps3 or x360
Bored last night while out of town, so I spent too much time hanging out in bestbuy....
I've been considering a ps3 so I can play some of the newer racing games on my big screen but watched someone playing transformers on an x360 last night. It got me looking at both machines and now I'm wondering what to get. PS3 is $500 and plays my few ps2 games, includes a HD (whatever that is for), so I can keep my GT4 and wait on GT5. x360 is $300, no HD (but is optional), is high res, but no GT4. It does play Forenza2 (never tried it). Looks like there are a lot more games available for x360 right now, but the PS3 shelves are starting to fill up. What do you guys play? TIA |
Get a Wii.
|
Sure fine....confuse the issue even more.....hehehe
|
Wii is suprisingly fun, but the games seem to lack depth.
I vote PS3, because of the GT series. Otherwise, all the games I like (EA Sports) are available for both, so it's a wash. |
Sony just announced yesterday that they are cutting the price on PS# by a $100.
Can't tell you which one to get as I have never used either. Although I have used the Wii and it is fun to play with others, it doesn't seem like a video game format that would match up well with race games. But I've only played golf, baseball, bowling, etc on the wii so maybe there is a great racing game. Rich |
I've heard some people have a sore wrist after playing with their Wii for too long...

You will get a lot more use from a 360. I unfortunately have both systems. As they are both great systems, the 360 has way more games available at this time. The ps3 does have Gran Turismo series but there are some driving games like forza 2 that are as good.
There are other strenghts for the 360 if you choose to use them. The interface / menu system is far superior to the ps3. Then there is the online content you can download. A monthly membership is required for around $8 month. It does cost a few dollars to download most items also. These downloads include full length movies and tv shows in regular and high def. Additional content for the games is also included here. You can attach a web cam camera to the 360 and video chat with anyone on the 360 network. the online chat functions are easier to use and you can chat with the other live competitors while you are racing. For an additional $200 you can add a HD DVD drive to the 360. The ps3 is a good system also. The menu system is not as polished and easy to use. The graphics are said to be better than the 360 but i disagree. There are not many good games available yet but you do get a blu-ray player included in the cost of the system. I would go to a store and find someone working there who you can get along with demo each system for you. |
I would go PS3
Only PS3 and Blue Ray has 1080P output - and the PS3 has the Blue Ray built in. The games and picture are just awesome!!! |
I have a younger brother who purchased the Wii. I tried fishing in the Zelda game and was surprised, it actually was fun.
|
We have all 3 consoles...
Here is my take: XBox360 Good games, good online, now with 3yr warranty. PS3 Overpriced even with $100 discount, no games, graphics same as xbox. GT5 will be good...is it worth 600 for one game? Who care if it has blue ray....unless your tv is 1080p and u get one of those overpriced blue ray discs then it is all the same. Wii A total blast. Games are simple, graphics are simple. Console is cheap. Fun with friends, controller is fun.... Overall Wii....most recommended. Xbox recommended. PS3 Waste of money. |
I think there is a reason why Wiis are still selling out on the day they arrive at retailers 8 months after they came out and in the middle of the "slow" summer video game season.
That said, if I was a hard-core gamer (which I am not--I was, but I just don't care now that I have a fast car), I would look at the Xbox. |
This is one of the main reason I went PS3
The PlayStation 3 comes with an array of data storage and transfer features. Whereas the PlayStation 2 only supported a memory card and the optional hard drive attachment (for a brief time), the PlayStation 3 supports numerous forms of portable media. The PlayStation 3 has 6 USB 2.0 ports, a memory stick slot, an SD slot, and, in stark contrast to many of Sony’s other consumer electronics products, the system actually supports compact flash. Sony even saved a space for a removable 2.5” hard drive. The Xbox 360, in comparison, doesn't have as much in the way of media support. It has two memory card slots and a handful of USB ports that are rumored to accommodate a host of devices like the iPod, USB memory sticks, and even Sony’s own PSP. However, the real power of the 360 is in its networking ability. We can't forget that Bill Gates's new system can also reach across the network to access media from local, Windows-based PCs. http://www.gamespot.com/features/6125087/index.html?type=tech |

I vote for the PS3 also. You can not get a Blue Ray DVD player for the cost of this system. The games will come. It's still more then I'm willing to part with. I don't use my PS2 that much either. The only games I have are Tiger Woods (multiple years), Madden (multiple years), and GT3 and GT4.
|
The forza series is much better than the GT.
The blue ray player is the only good thing about the ps3, but you can get an HDdvd add-on for the 360 for $200. 360's game selection is MUCH better and the system is more powerful too. |
I do have the 1080i TV.....
I looked at the games for the x360 and didn't see much other than the forza2 and the transformer game that I would think were worth trying. ps3 had more driving games that were up my alley. May end up that route. |

Here are the key advantages to Blu-ray:
http://homepage.mac.com/drew1/.Pictu...hare062407.jpg Don't buy HD DVD. It won't be around for long. |
Xbox, Forza2 rocks and is available now. GT5 is delayed, yet again. Xbox has a much deeper library of games.
If you want blue ray, why not just get a blue ray player? |
Can anyone actually sitting on their couch actually visually see a difference between a blu-ray and a HD-DVD?
My money would be on NO. And isn't HD DVD significantly cheaper? Sorry that is way off topic for the original post, I'm just curious. |
I haven't seen much of a secondary market on any of the three systems, zero on the PS3. My kid is happy enough with his 360, although he's spending more time on his new hotrod computer. Just had my first wii come in, it may be the best for mixing drinking with playing.

I'm still leaning toward the ps3. The new 80gig config comes with Motorstorm, which I was going to get anyway. Plus I can still play my ps2 games.
Think if I eventually find something I need a x360 for, I'll get it then. |

Regarding costs, it does cost more to manufacture Blu-ray than HD DVD, but both HD formats average $19.95 to $27.95 per disc and are priced pretty much the same in retail stores. Currently, the average price of HD discs sold through Amazon is $27.70 for Blu-ray and $32.40 for HD DVD. Look here for details. |
Got the ps3 on Sunday, kids have been glued to it. Driving motor storm took a little getting used to, but throttle steering through the mud seams to do the trick, teaching my son some new driving techniques. My daughter likes destroying things in Transformers. I haven't gotten the hang of driving that game yet.
Had to update the system software to run Transformers, just a quick plug into the cable modem. I do wonder if there is a wireless setup I can use to run to my wireless cable router, and how to assign a MAC address to it for my router security, as I usually keep my cable modem in another room. The dvd upconverter works well, better than the LG unit I had already. (oh yeah, I switched my netflix over to blue ray discs too) Store clerk said I was better to get the 60gig model vs the 80gig coming out, said ps2 games were still done with a chip, in the 80gig model it would go by software emulation and would require patches for all the ps2 games.....whatever...... Next thing to try is finding some of the ps3 games to download and run off the hard drive, see what those are like. I know whats on my wish list, WRC racing!!!! Love that on the ps2 |
is the xbox 360 backwards compatible? still have some unfinished splinter cell and halo2 that would like to play and would like to be able to play them on the 360

I am afraid you have choosen poorly ;) |
I thought both systems were HD/1080 for the games graphics?
|
Just wanted to share my initial thoughts on the xbox 360.
Mine was delivered by the UPS girl yesterday and within a few hours I had it connected, networked (wireless), xbox live setup, Windows Media Center Extender configured, and played some PGR3. Wow, this machine is much more than I expected...well worth the $400 I have invested to get all of the above working! :D SmileWavy |
I'm in the business.
Xbox 360 Wii PS3 In that order. |
Very pleased with my PS2
Sony has earned a customer |
Have a Ps2 but will get an xbox for the halo series..hard headed though and want an elite for the massive hard drive
|
At least a responsible company bought the MotoGP franchise from Namco for PS2.
I was bumming when XBox Had MotoGP4 and it was 18 months late for PS2; It was obsolete before it was released, and at $49.95 Feck that!! |
also as a dad I feel the 360 is on the better level for the family, my kids seem to adapt to and enjoy the 360 more than they ever did with the PS2. Thanks Alf for the package, hope to catch on live soon!
|
PS3 has much better packaging (compact shiny black plastic with integrated DvD.) But, x-box seems to have the more fun driving games.

to add to the discussion, I want to talk about Forza2.
First of all the feel of all the cars, acceleration and braking feel much closer to realistic than PG3 or GT4. And I also wanted to say Forza2 got the Nurburgring right...it's not perfect but WOW it's so close and much better than either of the others I mentioned. Happy Thanksgiving fellas. |
I looked at both a while back and concluded that BOTH were a waste of money. To simply play either Forza (X360) or GT5 (PS3) you're looking at a $600 to $700 investment by the time you're done.
That's about 15 fillups of gas in the 911. And that's a LOT of real driving fun. Besides, who has the time for video games anymore? |

Got the 360 Elite/HD DVD and love it xbox live has all kinds of demos (200+free) about ten of which are driving games. I bought Forza II guess I will pickup the cordless wheel next. We have two cordless rechargable controlers. I can also view videos and pics as well as listen to music from our two computers wirelessly through the 360 downstairs. It has worked on all my old xbox games I have tried so far. Got the 5 free HD DVDs with the HD DVD player offer at Best Buy.
This thing rocks with my 65" Toshiba HD 1080i and Denon 7.1. |
