Some iPhone Qestions
Okay, I have spent about an hour testing a co-worker's wife's iPhone and I think I want one - now, not later. Need Outlook compatibility before can use it for work, but for now I could buy one for the wife.
Here are a couple questions, if you early adopters can help me out: 1. What speeds are you getting when webbrowsing with EDGE? Can someone go to http://www.speedtest.net/ and run a couple of tests? Make sure you are not on WiFi. 2. What speeds are you getting when webbrowsing with WiFi? Can someone run some tests on http://www.speedtest.net/ using iPhone and their WiFi notebook, and compare? I want to find out if the iPhone is markedly slower than notebook. 3. Generally, how good/bad is Cingular/ATTWireless reputed to be, in terms of coverage, dead spots, etc? I'm hunting down the info for locally here in Portland, but of course we travel too. Particularly interested in how they are in the countryside, rather than in major metro regions - Oregon coast, Yosemite CA, Lake Tahoe region, Central Washington are all areas of interest. 4. There are some things I want to see improved. Outlook sync, obviously. Also would like to be able to use the keyboard in landscape mode, in more applications. Speaker volume in phone mode. Ringer volume. Do you think it is pretty safe to assume all these will be addressed via software update, so that there's no real need to wait for hardware version 2? 5. Is there any reason to think the version 1 iPhone will be handicapped when travelling internationally? I understand I'll have to buying an international data plan. pay for roaming, etc - can't simply swap in a local sim card. But subject to that, any reason it wouldn't work fine in Asia and Europe? 6. Thoughts on unlocked iPhones? My thought is, even when an unlocking hack is discovered, some of the iPhone features will still be Cingular-specific, e.g. visual voicemail, so I'm not sure I'm so motivated to unlock an iPhone. 7. Is 8MB enough? That's one thing that makes me think about waiting for version 2. Thanks, all.

1-2. That site needs flash which isn't supported. Another site (speedanywhere) gave me:
Wireless computer: 972kb iPhone: 965kb on WiFi 79kb on Edge 3. AT & T/CINGULAR is fine in Chicago. There were ratings of coverage in different cities by Consumer Reports a few years ago. Best carrier depends on your city. 5. Just got back from London. iPhone worked fine and was a lifesaver with google maps, etc. Took a chance without a laptop and it worked out fine. 7. I have a 2nd Gen iPod with 16.5 of 20GB filled, plus a 1GB 1st Gen Shuffle. Over the years I've gradually used the iPod for home/car and the Shuffle for exercise/commuter train. The 8GB on the phone is OK so far for a shuffle of music and a couple of TV shows/movies and some 35 photos. More would be better, but it is do-able. Last edited by RKC; 07-13-2007 at 08:20 AM.. |
