Big bumper stickers declaring your free fuel. Going on TV/radio and talking about it (which I have done).

Interestingly, the laws around transporting hazardous waste are becomeing a bigger hurdle than the tax issues.

wonder why

Anyway, sorry for the hijack. I think Priuses (Prii?) are cool beans. They are spendy, but the more people that buy them, the more developed and inexpensive the technology will become. I also think they are cool looking.

Jim Richards 07-16-2007 06:57 AM

I don't see any problems there, do you? ;)

notfarnow 07-16-2007 07:01 AM

no, what could possibly go wrong

If you truly believe that we are nearing the end of the oil supply you should use as much as you can to usher in the capitalistic need/demand for alternatives rather than relying on altruistic motivations. The former gets results, the latter just feels good.

Whether now or later, every drop of oil will be used so these conservationist efforts are only numbing or distracting the market as to the true need without actually helping the environment in the long run.

Save the earth, buy a Suburban:D

Not even the "peak oil" bears think we are going to exhaust the oil supply. There will always be oil available at a high enough price. What we will run out of is oil that can be bought for $70/bbl, and then oil at $100/bbl, and then at $120/bbl, so on. With plenty of short-term gyrations along the way.

I don't have a Prius. Not looking to buy one either.

But I think it a bloody riot that PORSCHE OWNERS are calling a Prius a 'look at me' car. Give me a break.

A Prius screams, "Look at me, I'm doing my part for the environment!!!!", but at least it doesn't scream, "I'm a Pr!ck with a small Pr!ck!!!!!". :)

While we're waiting, would someone build one of these for me? I'm willing to do my part.
177hp, 155+MPH, and 113MPG! All from a 5sp AUTOMATED Manual Diesel with less than .20 coefficient of drag, weighs around 1400 lbs.

I have seriously considered getting a 914, and using a Kennedy Engineering flywheel & adapter to mount a VW idi (1.6 or 1.9) or early 1.9 TDI (AHU) diesel engine. The 1.9 idi are good for 115 hp/130ft/lbs, the early 1.9 TDIs are good for 130-140hp. That could make a pretty cool commuter car.

Then again, I've thought about doing the same with a 911. Heck, they already have two tanks for a vegetable oil conversion.

*ducks*

Are you afraid someone might think you're a girlie-man if you drove anything less than your V8 911?

Kurt

Interesting that when the phrase "V-8 porsche" is mentioned that you'd assume it must be a grafted transplant into a 911...

Never seen one of these before?

That's right, the 8 in 928 means V-8. ;)

And yes, unlike the lame mopars being sold now, mine really is a "Hemi".

:D

Prius discussions on car forums always entertain me because of the way so many car people seem to get all worked up over this car. And I'm not sure why. But I'll admit that this discussion is far more.....discussional.....than the typical thread.

Still, though, I can't say I've ever noticed any snobbishness from Prius owners. Yes, I'm only aware of one such person whom I know personally and he's far too much of a Christian conservative to be a hippie liberal. Aside from that, I can't recall being subject to any sneers, gestures and comments from any of the Prii that have been around me.

Regarding the "Miata = chick car" thing, I have noticed such comments tend to come from people who really don't have a clue of what they are talking about. Hell, my fiancee's brother likes to make that comment a lot, but I just can't take car criticisms seriously from a guy who owned two third generation Camaros. ;)

I suppose there may be something to the "chick car" thing. I mean, I have had far more thumbs up/"Nice car!"/"Can you give me a ride?" comments from women during the 2.5 years of Miata ownership than I have had in the 7.5 years of Porsche ownership. The Porsche, on the other hand, seems to attract the guys.

But I digress...

I just can't bring myself to care about what other people drive, so long is it's safe to operate. Sure, I find things like the H2s to be rediculous, but in the end I drive two sports cars, so I'm really in no position to criticize one way or the other.

And I'd also like to see Hybrids do very well. It's likely they'll become more commonplace in the future anyway, so I'd love to see the technology take off so that we can still have our fun cars. :)

I did assume 911 V8, my bad.

I love 928s; I still lust after a 928GTS.

What's funny, is that my sister had a 928 in 1986, but of course the 928 is a "man's car", yes? :)

Take care,

Kurt

jyl 07-16-2007 11:10 AM

I'd love a 928GT/GTS. With 6-liter conversion and supercharger - 500 RWHP, whee! But with 4 vehicles and a 5th coming, I can't get one. Maybe after we dump, err sell, the Rangie.

Here's a project by the CTO and part founder of Tesla:

Maybe their enviro-guilt has peaked since they can't find any good Yugos anymore? Maybe it's because that huge rear window gives them lots of space for "Nuke the Gay Whales" bumper stickers?

lendaddy 07-16-2007 12:22 PM

If the Miata isn't a chick car then are we to assume that you don't believe there is such a thing as a "chick car"?

Because barring it's non existence as a legitimate category, I'm at a loss for a car more likely to don the label:D

Rick Lee 07-16-2007 12:32 PM

No, I don't think a Miata is a chick car. A new Beetle is though.

lendaddy 07-16-2007 12:34 PM

But the beetle could beat a 928 on a tight autocross course and therefore must be excluded from the chick car sweepstakes:D

Pretty much. I don't buy into the "chick car" or "man's car" or any of that crap for anything other than joking around. :)

Were such a category to exist, you just can't overlook the VW Cabriolet. ;)
