I haven't made up my mind if this is a good idea or a stupid one...

I haven't made up my mind if this is a good idea or a stupid one...

"Traveling abroad, point to one of the universally recognizable symbols (phone, restroom, airport, etc.), then point at the question mark, and that should be enough for a native to figure out what you’re after. Okay, so this isn’t exactly business casual — it’s more like bar casual — but you could always wear it underneath a dress shirt. Then, when you need help, just rip it open, Superman-style, and commence pointing. Seriously, it’s perfect for when you travel to places where you don’t speak the language. The oh-so-clever Traveler’s Phrase Book T-Shirt sells for $28.41 U.S. [via tcritic.com]"

Stupid. It is easier to carry a piece a paper in your wallet with 50 words. Or for that matter draw the symbols on a piece of paper.

I've found that people usually appreciate it when you try to speak their language. I agree with the 50 words approach. Speak, don't point when you can.

Muggers will love the idea. They don't have to look for people carrying maps. The victims will just point at themselves.

Well...I wouldn;t wear it cuz I think its gay but if some fur'nr had one on and was point'n at stuff, I might think it was a good idea.

I would be a great idea if some double D chick from Iceland had one!

I do like the idea of substituting the various symbols for lewd acts!

It should be just about trivial to learn enough of the foreign language to ask those 8 questions in any of the major European languages. Not that it necessarily impresses the locals that you took half an hour to learn how to say "Hey man, you know where the local public restroom is?" but if you unbutton your shirt and point at a symbol, they'll be impressed with how little you actually care about their country.

Just my $.02.

The concept is sound, but they would sell four times as many to the college crowd if it had a beer with suds on it and a boobie girl.

I think I'll just stick with speaking louder when they don't understand...

As if it wasn't bad enough dealing with all the tourists to begin with, the last thing I'm sure locals want is a bunch of non-native speaking "ugly American" type guys pointing to their chests and trying to use their man-boobs as a form of communication/language.

In Prague (15 years ago) some A-Hole (American Hole) was trying to bond with me as I was the only English speaking person he had spoken to in a whole two days. He thought it was funny to be loud, drunk and say "DickWeed" to the people serving him beer. It should of been prounounced "Dicque", but what did I know after six weeks of being there?

Ugly American?

I've seen it.

Note: I could purchase stamps by pointing at them (and anything else) and smiling...........and I could buy anything by pulling out cash.

Cash, the true international language.

first what is the symbol at the bottom?

and i would think a card with the symbols and the appropriate phrase in multiple languages would be a better idea

that shirt just scream stupid lazy ugly American...put the stars and strips on the rear and you can confirm their suspicions as you walk in the wrong direction to the can.

methinks it may be perceived by foreigners as just another piece of American laziness. why go through the trouble to learn a handful of words or phrases of another culture when you can just simply point at your shirt?

in my business travels, I have broken more barriers and engendered more friendship with foreign hosts by simply coming prepared with only a rudimentary understanding of their language, customs, and table manners. show them simple respect, and they'll repay you with their trust

when you are abroad, you too are an ambassador for your own culture. make the most of it. enjoy your stay by reaching out to those around you. it can open doors in ways you can't imagine. contrary to popular belief, the majority of the worlds people love their differences, and are fascinated with the ways of others. all it takes to break the ice is a little reciprocal respect

why don't you make a hat with the symbols? then you can point to your head.

personally , I would buy your t-shirt, but wear it with the symbols on my back.

I don't like the tourist idea - but you're on to something with the shirt. Try this idea:

Surround it with symbols, like a bed, a beer, car keys, stick figures of sexual positions etc., and sell them to fraternity kids.
