I'll write up exactly what has happened here - it's like a perfect storm of sorts. All we need now is an earthquake to top it off!

Yes, I just knocked on wood so the evil sprits couldn't hear me say that.

"Murphy's Law", "When it rains, it pours", "Just one more patch will fix it...", etc...isn't that typically the way it goes :)? Great job Wayne, my withdrawal symptoms are slowly fading away!

sand_man 07-25-2007 04:28 AM

I too buy most of my parts from this site and I've noticed that the header links/tabs at the top of the page (Welcome, New Parts Catalog, Technical Info Center, Photos & Community, etc.) don't appear to be successfully re-directing from the forums. I have to go out to PelicanParts.com directly to get where I need to go. Just FYI, I know this a work in progress.

And thanks for the hard work!!!

ossiblue 07-25-2007 06:44 AM

Wayne,
I can't thank you enough for all your work and such a great forum. I seem to be the odd one here, but the speed, for me, is beyond slow--and I have cable modum. Hope it will remedy soon because sometimes I can't even switch topic pages.

Keep up the good work!

shbop 07-25-2007 07:13 AM

Not that fast at all. I'm on cable, and it loads very, very slowly.

JeremyD 07-25-2007 08:21 AM

Thanks Wayne for all your hard work - I know this is a hurdle - and I imagine that right now it's probably like haveing two day jobs.

t951 07-25-2007 08:29 AM

I am addicted to this forum like Lindsey Lohan and alcohol.....and coke.....and attention.....and alcohol....

soxnail 07-25-2007 09:50 AM

Question

Wayne, I am still having speed problems with the site, but I think I may have figured it out or may be its a coincidence. I am behind a very robust fire wall. My fire wall prevents the discloser of browser information. It also sends out no referrer information. This may cause a conflict with what ever Dos (denial of service) protection you are using. Any credence or just a wag (wild assed guess) on my part?

Missing BB feature?

Wayne,
This loads way faster than before. There is a "Previous Thread | Next Thread" hyperlink banner at the bottom of each page. Can this be added to the top of each page of this new BB version as well? It was very helpful when searching for info in a recent thread.

Your effort is appreciated.

BTW, would Gramar Ccheck be two munch to aks for?;)

hitched1 07-25-2007 10:24 AM

Much faster than it was!

hitched1 07-25-2007 10:33 AM

any reason why I cant post a new thread in OT?

Danglerb 07-25-2007 11:53 AM

Thanks for keeping the forum nice.

I missed it while it was down, almost had to talk to my wife about Porsche's. Very dangerous. ;)

Nostril Cheese 07-25-2007 12:10 PM

Forum is slower than it was before.

At least on my end anyway..

the 07-25-2007 12:16 PM

Still slow to "very slow."

rbuswell 07-25-2007 05:40 PM

It's my understanding, Wayne, that you designed the original peer-to-peer system yourself. Is the new software a commercial product or your own upgrades?

red67 07-25-2007 11:59 PM

your efforts are much appreciated wayne.
I realise how much of a good thing pelican is when its offline for a little while and I miss it.

jhelgesen 07-26-2007 05:17 AM

Any reason I keep having to log in, several times a day? I have "remember me" checked. Running firefox. I hit my bookmark for the site and the login is gone.

THANKS for fixing the system Wayne!!!

Stutzdriver 07-26-2007 05:19 AM

Wayne,

Thanks so much for all the work on the forum!!! Jumped in here this AM and it is LIGHTNING FAST!! Every page loads in the blink of an eye and the look is a great blend of the old and the new. Thanks for restoring the links at the top as I find the "Jump to" function at the bottom of the page to be a PIA.

I'm sure I speak for all of us here in saying a great big "THANK YOU" for all you do for this "Community".

Ok thanks thats understandable. I need to configure my fire wall better, because when it is disabled the site is much and I mean much faster.
Thanks for all your effort.

Hey Wayne,

I noticed Vbulletin 3.6.8 is out. When you going to update the BBS? ;)
I think it just came out today. Bug fixes only.

shbop 07-26-2007 09:53 AM

Much, much faster this morning.

Tidybuoy 07-26-2007 12:46 PM

It's looking good. I had no idea I had some many archived messages (until the new program told me so). I deleted all of my sent messages just for you guys at Pelican.

Keep up the good work!

Grady Clay 07-26-2007 02:37 PM

Wayne,

Some Forum questions, thoughts and possibly lame suggestions.
My online forum experience is 95% the earlier Pelican version. Most of the remainder is Early S and some 914 and other. I have difficulty using P-list (re-named).

I like the new Pelican. And it is faster today. Thank you.

Why is an “attachment” disabled? I assume this if to prevent improper programs from invading the system. There are occasions where posting an Excel spreadsheet might be useful. Is there a safe way?

Today someone brought up the custom avatar issue. I assume that will be addressed after all the basics are covered - if it isn’t already.

I’m in favor of members posting at least their first name and city/state/country. Can there be a reminder somehow? That wouldn’t compromise anyone’s personal information. I thinks this adds greatly to the camaraderie of the Forum. It also allows someone nearby in the world to chime in and help. You have a remarkable world-wide community.

What is the difference between vBulletin 2 defaults and vBulletin 3 Style?

Need to load 2007 (and ’08) calendars. It might be useful for the public calendar be open to every Porsche related events with links. Sorta like sticky are also used.

I’m glad to see the same Advanced Search Function. I still think a very complete (but newbee oriented) set of search instructions would be useful. Same with posting images and using URLs.

Is it reasonable to have a special 2-letter dictionary for allowed search “words”?
A few might be:
GT, RS, ST, CV, 2-digit dates (67 or ’67), and the like. I suspect there are 2-300 that would be useful.
As the archive gets larger every day, the search function becomes more important.

There are some situations where the “Forum Jump” scroll-down menu doesn’t appear at the bottom of the page. This mostly seem to be in “Site Areas.” The Search Page is one. Even “Back” doesn’t get me back. Perhaps it is just dumb ol’ me not recognizing other methods to do the same thing. I end up going through my MSN “Favorites” menus.

My point here is to have every screen consistent to navigate. I can see some getting lost and frustrated.

Much of this just may be my lack of web-skill or there is some technical issue within vBulletin Version 3.6.7.

Best,
Grady

Wayne,

The links for top header (Welcome, New Parts Catalog, etc) are not pointing the correct pages, instead redirecting to subpages under forums.pelicanparts.com which doesn't seem to exist.

On other motor forums I have been it has been mandatory, either in user name or in signature, to use ones full real name. Tends to keep the conversations more civilized, not a big problem here, but its a good suggestion.

That would be really good if possible! Yesterday I tried to search for "3.2", that didn't work....

KFC911 07-27-2007 04:14 AM

Wayne, I think you've done a fantastic job getting us addicts back to normal! Have you considered putting a "forum suggestion box" sticky thread up for a few days in order to get some centralized feedback on tweaks, problems, etc. that we may encounter as we learn our way around the new system? All-in-all, I really like it thus far, thanks again, and please take this weekend off :)!

jriera 07-27-2007 04:44 AM

Amazing job Wayne!! Thanks and Congratulations!

Will you be enabling RSS any time soon?

toddu 07-27-2007 06:41 AM

Hey Wayne... just an FYI. It appears that once you hit the forums, the other links (ie - back to the Pelican "home" site) don't appear to work.

I like the new BBS software though.

I still can't upload photos. I am logged in. Is there a different URL I should be using? I am logging into the BB via the main PP pages.

red-beard 08-01-2007 02:55 PM

Did you see my note about using the post new topic button, from inside another topic?

onZedge 08-02-2007 03:15 PM

Thank You Wayne

The IT elves must've fixed it when I wasn't looking.

I didn't read the whole post . . .

Major Irritant:

The Search feature needs that really stupid hard to read code to work. 50% of the time I've typed it in wrong - OK, I'm blind, I know but wtf? Then, it spits you out & you have to decipher a new stupid code to type in. We try to encourage newbies to use the search, does it have to be more difficult to do so?

Is it really necessary, Wayne? If so, I'll shut up & bear with it.

Ian

How do I track this thread without having to type something first?

imcarthur 08-03-2007 03:31 PM

Kim

See upper left hand at the top of the thread in Thread Tools . . .

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1186183823.jpg

And ignor my post above. You only have the search issue when not logged in.

Ian
