Swiss Army Knife Poll

So I left my 7 year old Victorinox Tinker in the xray machine at a gov't building when I dropped off a proposal (I hope we win). Since I felt naked without it, I went knife shopping. I went to two big sporting good stores and all they had was Wenger knifes. I bought one anyway, but it wasn't the same, so I ordered another Tinker (this one clear blue to replace the camouflage one) online the next day. Hard to break a 20 year habit.

Anyway, was is the general preference of the PP community?

I'm not a big fan of Swiss Army knives. I've broken more blades than I can count.

I keep my old Boy Scout knife in my pickup truck. I've left it outside for a whole winter (and I blued it afterwards to fight off the rust) and it keeps ticking.

You forgot Leatherman, SOG, etc. I prefer these tools, rather than the old Swiss Army knife. I have a Leatherman micra in my pocket right now.

No I didn't. It's my poll. Seriously, I wear a suit a lot and a leatherman would stand out more than these knives do. I only need basic tools, the leatherman and it's extra implements like pliers would be kept in the car.

That's why I carry the Leatherman Micra. It's very small & light, and could be carried in a suit easily. I like it better than any Swiss Army knife. You should check it out. There are a couple of other brands with similar sized tools, like Gerber, SOG. Pick your favorite.

But you're right, the big Leathermans, and other tools like it, are too heavy to carry in a pocket, whether that pocket be in jeans or in a suit.

I used to carry my Victorinox Huntsman wherever I went - having it in my pocket was as natural has having my car keys. Then one day I went to cover the pres. during a visit to Florida. As I checked in at the press table, I remembered the knife. I was pretty sure that security wouldn't be too excited about it so I abandoned it on the press table.

That was Sept. 11, 2001 - afterwards, I had to sneak up to a CNN crew preparing for a live broadcast to get my knife back - I couldn't believe it was still on the table. But I've never carried it since.

Leatherman Wave on my belt right now.

I've broken too many blades with Swiss Army knives

I like the Climber. A tad thicker but it has scissors, which have come in handy, the two blades, and of course the ever popular Corkscrew.
I think the lengh is a tad ove 3.5" when closed

Victorinox here!! I've had mine for over 24 years. Have one on my person, in my backpack and one in my car. Never broken one yet, just chipped the tip of a blade once when I dropped it.

What are you guys doing to break the blades on these knifes???

I would get a leatherman tool over pretty much any pocket knife.

Got a Victorinox myself - direct from Switzerland (in-laws picked it up for me when they visited recently, so I know it's the real deal). Wasn't cheap either.

Love it, although the blade could use some sharpening up. . .

I carry just a knife with one blade. I like hard blade material that holds an edge well. I don't generally carry the "tools" although I do have a "Swiss-tech" tool key that was free on my keychain.

I've got a free leatherman type thing in my glovebox.

My wife has never forgiven me for giving her a Swiss Army knife for her birthday twenty years ago.

Victorinox for me but I only use it when camping, fishing, or sailing. I carry a leatherman micra all the time and keep a Gerber multi tool in the glovebox.

Wow, didn't expect such a lopsided preference in the poll.

I agree, though. Wengers aren't the real thing.

The utility of a Swiss Army knife has diminished since the TSA forbade carrying even the tiniest blade on a commercial flight. And the new small Leathermans are enticing substitutes, though even the small ones are heavy.

I still keep my old Swiss Army knife around, it comes in useful about once a week.

The swiss cross on the Wenger is just a decal and wears off. The Victorinox is inlaid.

I have carried a Deluxe Tinker for about 15 years

I have one of each and like them both. Victoronox makes a "leatherman" type multi tool that I much prefer over early lethermans.
