Hey guys,

Didn't mean to start a competition on who can provide free advice, as I have given lots of free advice on this BBS in the past.

But what was initially requested, I thought, was design drawings of a garage.

Now, since our hourly rate in the office is $125-145/hour for us designers (you don't want to kow how much Michael Graves or Robert A.M. Stern charges per hour), and any kind of thinking, dsigning, and then drawing, amounts to more than a few hours, this could really add up in effort. And effort is time, and time is what professionals charge.

Asking a doctor for "advice" is not having him do actual surgery. Asking a lawyer for "advice" is not having him write a legal brief.

Sure, ask for my advice; advice is cheap, but you can't build from advice.

All architectural competitions usually have an honorarium associated with them, or at least a cash prize for 1-5 place finishers.

A free competition for architects is like asking for free legal briefs or free medical treatment.

What is it about the word architect, who are professionals, that is at odds with the word free?

May I use your Porsche for free for six months (about the value of our services)?

Not trying to be a smart ass, but which architect would give away free services, even to a BBS buddy?

That is why I said rendering, I already have one drawing up plans, so I know about that, but after meeting with the builder yesterday, got me thinking about what other guys are thinking. A rendering can show off the idea without giving the secrets, geez, this was meant to be fun, at least Steve gets it

How many bays? How high? Air Conditioned? Plumbing?

Man Byron I can’t believe these guys want to charge you!! If the professional mechanics thought the same way then we wouldn’t get any advice as it wouldn’t be prudent for people to fix their own cars. Anyway - I did an artist rendition of the outside. When you get it done, let me know (when the chicks are there of course).

Has there ever been an era with so much dreck being built? Not to pick on the architects (they would blame the builders, developers and customers anyway). Drive around these United States and just look at the modern mini-mall, manufactured home, mcmansion, steel barn-shed-garage, office park and the rest of the blight that is so disgusting. A waste of land, materials and men's labors. You want a nice building? Get a pre-war pattern book, or drive around with a camera. Pay the fees to get it worked up into building plans, zoning approval and etc. As for how to divide up the space inside, think about your needs and wants and start to doodle..

I drew this before I saw Super-Dave's picture, guess all guys do think a-like.SmileWavy

The dreck is a reflection of our society and it's cultural values.

Some will argue that post WWII Americans lack the education and appreciation for the arts, including the art of architecture. And that we need supporters of the arts, sophisticated patrons in order to exist, survive and flourish.

I contend that the automobile is responsible, but God I love cars. Don't need a city if you have a car, need an suburban environment with lots of surface parking.

Detail in the building, why? Cursing by at 50 mph you have three seconds to decide if you want to stop, not giving notice any detail or quality at that speed my friends.

"New Urbanism" or Neo-Traditional town design is the answer for some.

The Retro-Design fad of buildings (regressive and faux) has lasted 20 years. I don't see it changing as America becomes more bound by fear (conservative) and wishes of a simpler past permeate our culture. As the future become more dim, the will for progressive architecture diminishes with it.

The pit doubles as a beer tub and the girls dance on the top of a tool chest. Brilliant! Kach, you're a genius!

Most of the retro design is just as bad. It's like they just don't get it... Architects schooled in modernism forced into doing work they don't appear to love or appreciate. Or just trying to keep the costs in line..

I see old dairy barms and garages for tractors up-state New York were not built by those with lots of education or appreciation for the arts and lots of new fuglyMcMansion vacation homes are built by educated professionals..

I don't know the answers. But it is pretty awful out there..:(

The beautiful (vernacular) standards of the old American farm house, or the little Greek village house, or whatever done without an architect and by tradesmen or the homeowners themselves is somewhat a mystery of how they get it so right.

The generic and honest nature of such structures leaves me in awe. However show it to a client exposed to the latest subdivision builderesque trendy "more is better", "bigger is better" and it just ain't got that "BLING".

My next house design is going to have gold chains on it and spinning 20 inch wheels, seems to be what people with money and no taste want. Can't forget the glowing green lights underneath either. So okay I'm taking about cars now, but you see my point, right?

The Gaijin 07-27-2007 08:21 AM

:(Yes.

You guys are still missing the point, I know what I want, but what would your shop be like And kach22i, have you been talking to Neil?

I'm with you guys on the state of architecture, I even looked at getting an old brick building, but since I really want something at home, I'm going this route. I checked into steel buildings, but turns out the cost wasn't that much less than a real building, so off I go:D

I know there are other bike guys here too who will set aside a work area for their Park stand & toolsSmileWavy

Timely thread--tuesday I had lunch with an old friend from college who wants to build what he calls his "man lair" on a 5 acre parcel up in the sticks of northern Michigan; something where he can keep his cars in one place, wrench on them at will, and have dedicated space for having buddies over/ spending the night in case he's up too late with the cars and doesn't want to drive the half an hour home. A cottage of cars up north if you will.

Anyway, we burned through a few cocktail napkins to get to these thoughts--lacking in the detail mentioned in earlier posts but I thought an appropriate post given the timing (I'll have to issue an addendum for the stripper poles)
