theres some old volvo thing that has its full beam 'flash' on a foot pedal and not a stalk on the steering column. a friend of a friend has one - if they see another guy in the same car (and its only certain years that have it) they take their hands off the steering wheel and 'flash' as only they can do it.
now thats a wave ![]() a dangerous one though. maybe thats why theres not many of them left ![]()

maybe we should come up with a secret Pelican wave as there have been many times that I've come across other P-cars and wondered if I had a fellow pelicanner behind the wheel.
Maybe a right hand under the neck with fingers extended and waving slightly to simulate the pelican's craw.

So many of the people who drive later cars (996 and on, stereotypically) drive the car as a status symbol. Now that the 997's are out, the Brand New Aura of the 996's is starting to wear off, and a lot more of us are getting into 996's. We may have to change our collective stereotype of these drivers?

I meet a 997, boxster, and a cayman on nearly a weekly basis driving to work in my 69. Not a single one waves to me.
I also meet a spitfire, and a midget on a fairly regular basis. They wave every time. Some people just forget where their cars come from. Let it go, and enjoy the drive. Wayne

I'll wave to a Porsche car that I respect or like, (older 993 and earlier, maybe a new GT2) because I generally feel these people get the same enjoyment out of the

Some people are friendly, some are not. Some are distracted and didn't notice you in time to wave back. Some don't have a clue why you would be waving at them, or if you are waving at them or someone else. I got over it in about 1969. Have a great summer! ![]()

Back in New England!

I live in the Monetery region of CA. There are more P-cars in this region than anywhere else in the country that I've had the pleasure to live in. I wave to each one that I see. MOST DO NOT WAVE BACK. Even when they see me. Doesn't matter what year or car type. I think most of them have no clue what the "wave" is and are probably don't care. I get more non-Porsche drivers that wave or shoot something nice to me.
On a side note, I'm a fan of the Pelican sticker idea. At least we'll know how to identify each other out of the Porsche crowd. I was at a PCA event early this year and I was talking to a 996 owner about my car and I was telling him what I had done to it so far. He was amazed and asked me how I knew how to do so much. I simply said that I had prior automotive experience and received a lot of help from other Pelicans. He said he had heard of the Pelican forums but they were way too technical for him. That gave me a feeling that there are probably two types of Porsche owners; those that love to drive their cars and those that love to work on and drive their cars (even if it can be very frustrating at times). -Matt

I'll generally look at the driver of the other Porsche. If he looks back, I'll nod or something like that. If they wave, I'll wave.
No biggie to me. Btw, I was sitting at a light (in my red 996), and had my windows open. A guy in a beautiful red 356 pulls up to my right as he's slowly motoring past, getting ready to turn right. He stops and looks at me and says enthusiastically, nice car and really nice color! ![]() It was nice to see a true Porsche fan with no stupid biases. |

I was driving a big 'ol 1980's ex army cutvee, totally redneck looking vehicle with non reflective paint old looking green paint, saw a Boxster, waved out the window, he had this weird look that said, "do I know this guy...?" I then realized I wasn't in the Porsche...

I can remember clearly being maybe 8 or 9 years old an riding in my dad's 356 S90 when a 911 went by the other way. They both gave each other the wave. I asked my dad if he knew the other person, he said "nope, it is just what porsche owners do". This was in 77 or 78. I still do it. does not matter what model I may be in at the time.
Sort of like on bike, you give a nod or a gesture to passing motorcyclists who are sharing a road with you doing what you love. I think is lost on most people, more so on the newer car owners. I never find it to difficult to wave or nod, and if someone does not reciprocate, pass the nuts....... ![]() Chees

Damn, speeder, I can't believe you'd get so seriously bent out of shape just because someone didn't wave at you.
