Modern-Day Steve McQueen?
The Bullit thread got me thinking. Is there any actor today whom we could call a modern-day Steve McQueen? I can't think of one.
Post your candidate and your reasoning... |
Patrick Dempsey is an amateur race driver. But he's not "McQueen" tough.
|
Russel Crowe would be a better fit for the role than Brad Pitt IMHO. No one that I would come up with to completely fill McQ's shoes, he was one of a kind.
|
Hmm...Russel Crowe is certainly closer than Patrick Dempsey...
What about Colin Farrel? |
No More Real Men?
legion,
Thats a damn good question! Or a John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Lee Marvin, Jimmy Stewart...Or god fore sake us ...Telly Savalis Who are the super heros now? Nicoles Cage...Geez...NOT! I like Will Smith..Could be kinda sorta??? Who Else..What happened to the manly men? Tom Hanks?????Nah! Not tough enough. Barry Pepper could be.. Interesting |
Tom Cruise, surely :-)
|
What about Bruce Willis? I've always liked his stuff in a McQueen sorta way.
|
Good call Mike.
|
Jason Statham or Daniel Craig. If you have not seen 'Layer Cake' i highly recommend it.

I think to be a Steve you would have to be in movies but in addition have a cool extracurricular activity like racing. No one comes to mind. |
By "Modern-Day Steve McQueen" do you mean McQueen as a person/celebrity, or McQueen-type movies?
If you're talking movies, Tom Cruise as Frank Bullit would surely work. So would Leonardo DiCaprio, Gary Oldman or Johnny Depp, to name a few. These people are very good character actors. Their job is to be convincing. They'd, in fact, be the easiest part toward generating a modern-day Steve McQueen. The real issue, of course, is whether the script is up to a Bullit/Callahan/Popeye Doyle level. The second issue would be whether a studio has the guts to make an updated McQueen-type movie and rely on script/acting/directing capability as opposed to special effects and contrived action scenes. |
No one is a new McQueen because the stuff he did was relatively rare and new then in the '60's and is not now. Doing your own stunt work was done by a rare handful of actors then; now? LOTS of them SAY they do it. Driving race cars as a hobby? Hell that 90210 guy even does that.
Being inately cool? Well, I can't think of anyone that isn't TRYING to be "inately cool"...maybe McQueen was trying too, but it dodn't show nearly as much as these Bozo's. The Johnny Depps and Colin Farrell's just try too hard. I think McQueen cannot be recast. |
The acting roles...
The inate coolness... The off-the-set hobbies... The passion...(Remember "LeMans"?) |
I think I was watching the Toyota Pro-Am, and they were interviewing Patrick Dempsey, and instead of his driving suit saying Patrick Dempsey, it said Dr. McDreamy. It made me throw up in my mouth a little.
The funniest thing is that when any of the network shows does a story about him, they talk (and he brags) about what a great driver he is, like he'd be in an F1 car if acting didn't get in his way. I've seen him drive, and he's about at the level of a PCAer who's done 10 driving events. No pro by any means - I doubt he could even hold his own in a PCA Club Race. |

I didn't have to worry about Steve being a ******, one has to wonder about today's crop.
I hope Billy Bob and Bruce are ok. Jim |

I am disappointed that Patrick Dempsey would have allowed that "McDreamy" crap to be put on his driving suit. He should have refused to wear it or have ripped it off himself. Steve McQueen never had to tell anyone who he was or that he was cool. He could have given a schit what you thought of him and I know someone who knew him in his last years when he lived in Santa Paula, CA and said that he was the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. Very friendly to the average car guy. I don't know if that was always the case, but it was atthe end. |
Daniel Craig is supposed to be the choice for a McQueen biopic that they are going to do...
in attitude, Russell Crowe seems to be the most logical choice... Craig looks a little like him and is built pretty well however... him being the hotter choice in hollywood right now makes him a good bet to do the biopic. McQueen's widow is in control of the thing, and she likes Daniel Craig... http://www.b.cinematical.com/2007/06/22/steve-mcqueens-widow-wants-daniel-craig-for-a-biopic/ Patrick Dempsey? He is kind of a pooff....sorta vain with his nose job and face work etc. |
None are McQueen....
Tommy Lee Jones Robert DeNiro Bruce Willis Christopher Walken Arnold Schwarzeneggar Sylvestor Stallone James Gandolfini Mel Gibson Vin Deisel Clint Eastwood Russel Crowe Colin Ferrell Al Pacino Wesley Snipes William DaFoe Harrison Ford |
What about Matt Damon? Bourne Ultimatum opens this week.
