Home Depot - "You Can Do It, Illegals Can Help"
I drove by my local Home De(s)pot earlier today and lo-and-behold, they now have a separate area of their parking lot designated for all the local "day laborers" (translation: illegals) to hang out and wait to be picked up by local contractors and homeowners. How convenient! How wonderful that such a progressive-minded company is pandering to an underclass of individuals that are here illegally, stealing American jobs and money to be sent across the border tax-free, never to return.
![]() This makes me just ill thinking about it. Sick. Now I'm sure they'll claim, "well, it's not our place to verify the immigration status of people that just want to hang out on our property and make themselves available for work - they're not OUR employees after all", but let's be realistic - there's NOBODY in the "day labor" business that ISN'T a friggin' illegal around here. And I'm sure they damn well know it. Home Depot indirectly profits from this, since any work going on (legal or not) means more potential revenue for them, so why should they care, right? Provide these guys with a nice corner of the parking lot to sit around in and bull$hit and loiter (and probably scheme how to get 100 more of their "amigos" back home up here to the USA). I'd love to see what Home Depot would do if I started organizing daily meetings of the CA chapter of the Minutemen on their property. How long d'ya think it'd take 'em to tell me to get lost or to have us arrested or to sic their lawyers on me? Maybe a day? A couple of days? Sickening what this country is coming to. Last time I spend a dime at Home Depot - I'll seriously drive the 5 extra miles to go to Lowes now. I'll pony up $50 and a free night's use of my 951 for the first person to show up there in a big black van with "I.C.E." emblazoned on the side. An extra $50 if you get video of the panicked scramble that will undoubtedly ensue. Could be good entertainment potential here.

It must be because I am a bleeding heart liberal with a roof over my head and food on the table, but I can't muster much antipathy towards men who want to support their families by doing hard work all day long in a foreign country.

I wouldn't either so long as they went through the proper channels to get here, paid their dues and taxes like everyone else and played by the rules.
Call me insensitive, but maybe they should have thought a bit about the implications of having kids (and by extension a family to support) while living in a third-world country with no marketable skills or reliable means of support. Why should we be rewarding someone that's unable to keep his/her fly zipped up and breeding 'em without means to be feeding 'em? I don't buy that "I have to support my family" rationalization B.S. for a second. Should have thought about that before you stuck it in, amigo.

Jeff,
We're racists because we recognize the rule of law! Matt, that's a stupid racist film, but in no way a parody to Jeff's argument. You are smarter than playing that sick ridicules race card. This video is a typical extreme view of the situation and not fair! What is it about "ILLEGAL" do people misunderstand? Bob

I know of a company that no longer provides the security required to remove the day laborers, because the HD was handcuffing said company, and wouldn't allow it to do its job.....

![]() But not to worry, the illegals aren't "stealing American jobs" jobs because there's that other group of American guys on the other side of the parking lot waiting for THEIR turn to volunteer for back breaking work, in the sun, for low pay. ![]()

Do you wonder why emergency rooms are closing, why there are 40 kids in elementary school class rooms? Does anyone here think someone getting $10/hour cash, is really paying his fair share of the taxes. Do you really think they're paying the $6,800/year it cost to educate their kids in public schools. Oh wait, I forgot we get cheap lettuce! The actual cost of the labor in growing and picking vegetables is about 15% of the grocery store price, so my lettuce goes up my a dime, its still a better deal. Illegals drain our society, and anyone who doesn't believe it is naive, or just plain dense, or worse yet, they want society (read me) to pick up the tab for something they think is benign .

Is the city council or local government forcing the Home Depot to accommodate the day workers?
I've read where legislation has been passed in cities in CA, and other states to make permits for building a new Home Depot or Lowe's contingent on restrooms, covered structures during winter, and/or other accommodations being made available to the day workers at the expense of the business. Im not going to cut and past news articles, but do a quick search. Its hard to blame a large corporation like home Depot for something like this. |

This particular Home Depot is (I believe) in the City of Signal Hill, which is a bit of an odd political entity (completely engulfed by City of Long Beach with autonomous local authority, but I believe they do delegate out some services to LB - planning functions may very well be part of this).
If so, it would explain a lot - City of Long Beach planning is one of the worst-run organizations I've ever come across. Completely inconsistent in their decision-making, total lack of vision, complete lack of adherence to master planning studies (paid for by taxpayers, BTW), etc. They have absolutely no vision for this city at all. If they're somehow calling the shots for City of Signal Hill, it would actually make a LOT of sense. Next time I'm down at LB for permit issues or whatever I'll try to find out. If so, it wouldn't be all that difficult to find out who made either the decision to allow it or the decision to require it - this work would have required a signage permit and a building permit at the very least, just not sure how it's done in City of Signal Hill (never done any work there, but I can find out easy enough).

I don't condone illegal aliens and it is a massive problem with out schools and hospitals... however is it possible that HD is doing this to get the "day workers" to congregate in one area to make it easier for security to spot thief's roaming the parking lot?
