Penny Collecting

When I was a kid back in the mid 70's I started.

I quit in 1983.

I pulled out the collection and according to a coin website 4 of my pennies are worth a total of about $15k

Then I go to e-Bay and I can buy them for $7 each.

The coins that are supposed to be "of value" are '61, '62, '63 and '64: all are "proof" condition.

What's the deal?

I also have this penny that reads: "In God We ( unreadable defect )"

It is an error from the mint. Instead of "trust", it's just a raised blob of copper.

Maybe I should post a picture of that?

Let's not get started on pennies. I collect wheat pennies. I also seem to keep my pocket change. I have bags of pennies, I can't stand pennies! Part of the reason I keep them, is to sort through them for the wheats.

Anyway, I have two steel pennies from 1943, my earliest is from 1928.

Is it a blob or does it look like part of the blank? Maybe the die/stamp chipped.

The 1909, about $3.00. The steel pennies are not worth much, less than a dollar each. Now, if you can find a rare copper from 1943...

Thats an error - they arent supposed to get out - it probably with 50 to 100 times it value!!

I once had a uncirculated paper dollar that looked like it was jammed in the machine and the folded like an acordian so it alternated ink from the back on the front and visa versa - I think I sold it for 50 but very rare.

Since I have a subscripton to Coin World, I have access to the current coin prices.

A 1909 VDB in Fine retails for $17

However, a 1909S VDB in Fine retails for $1,100

The 1943 steelies in Fine retail for $.25

Did'nt they make about 50 or so of those @ the beginning of the run? I remember those being worth 50K or something like that.

Trekkor, that sure looks like an error from the mint as Super Dave notes above.

I would bet that you could get anywhere from $10 to $25 for it on eBay. I'd hang on to it just for the novelty / entertainment factor.

The steel pennies was a WWII thing - copper was needed elsewhere.

Are those supposed to be prices? That would be like selling my 911 for about $500,000.

I used to collect pennies and coins. I don't think I have anything particularly valuable. Once working at a retail place the guy at the cash register broke open a roll of pennies. Of the 50 pennies in the roll, 49 were wheat pennies. Of the 49, the dates ranged from 1909 to 1923. He didn't know anything about them, but knew that they were more special than regular pennies. I couldn't talk him out of a single one of them.

On a couple of different occasions I got a blank quarter and a couple of blank dimes out of the plastic wrappers from the bank. No, they aren't slugs. I'm certain that they are blanks that were never stamped. I think that those are pretty cool. Unfortunately not as cool as something that's double-stamped or partially stamped.

I'm going to call a coin shop tomorrow.

My coins have never been touched.

I remember riding my bike to the coin shop and buying them.
Whenever I bought coins for my collection, I bought the best condition I could afford.

Wouldn't it be insane to spend $20-40 bucks as a kid and have it turn out to be worth $15k 30 years later...Hmmm.

Had to check OT one more time before going to bed... then detour to climb into the attic to dig out the pennies. Haven't seen them in years. Looks like I've got a lot of old pennies that are worth $.01. Oldest is 1907 Indian. One 1920. Lots of 40s and 50s.

One would be generous to call me a coin dealer, I mostly buy gold and silver for bullion price. eg, silver dimes are $.80 or so now. When I started the guy I bought out was buying common wheats (what most are) for 2 cents and selling for 3. A cool 50% profit but you gotta move a lotta damn pennies to generate any money. I quit fooling with them years ago.
Re the Coin World prices, I have friends give me issues so I have some idea where the trends are going. The posted prices seem mostly top retail, I'd expect offers of 30-50% less. Who knows what something will bring on ebay.
