Concord Grape Wine

I've got two HUGE Concord grape plants. These suckers were probably planted when the house was built in 1953. I cut them back mercilessly last Winter and still, they choke my walkway. I'd guess they'll again make somewhere in the neighborhood of THIRTY OR FORTY GALLONS of grapes. I have enough grape jelly to feed the troops in Iraq. I'm thinking of making wine. Anybody done this before? I just question the wisdom of making wine from grapes that taste like jelly.

Okay, we've got another runaway thread. I swear, I was on the OT forum when I posted this.

i think you need to make wine from a different kind of grape, usually the ones for wine are pretty nasty tasing if you use them for anything other than wine. but you sure could make some fresh grape juice with them.

If Mogan David can make wine form Concord grapes, so can you.

A Review:
Rot-gut!
Mar 26 '00
Product Rating: 2.0 out of 10.0
Pros: Cheap, easy to find
Cons: Poor quality, "candy" sweet

Full Review
Mogan David Concord "wine", to use the term loosely, is highly predominant at dorm parties and cheap office get-togethers. Mogan David is a very sweet, Kosher wine with a high alcohol content. Imagine grape juice and vodka mixed together. Along with the popular Concord, Mogan David also comes in Blackberry and Cherry flavors. The cherry tastes surprisingly like cherry pie filling. Any of the flavors can be mixed with soda for a nice spritzer, but I wouldn't recommend drinking it straight. Two glasses usually gives me a stomachache. This wine would be good for anyone who's looking for a cheap buzz.

You are right to question the wisdom of fermenting jelly grapes...

I'm trying to avoid tossing all those grapes, or making another thousand jars of jelly. the grapes are just now turning red. I wonder if I might harvest them now, prematurely and before they make any more sugar, and make wine. Perhaps it could be something better than jelly-candy-wine.

If you end up with copious gallons and need to "share" lemme know.

I love homebrew stuff.

Reminds me of my youth and old world relatives that are not with us any longer.

Fond memories of sitting in the garden on a nice summer eve with the smells of the earth all around and a big old jug of something out of the cellar.

you want the sugar in there. that is what the yeast feds on in the fermentation process.

LOL, grandma was quite the tea totaler but always had a bottle of that on the shelfs... brings back memories!

Supe, back in high school I made wine from Welches grape juice as a "science project" (can't believe the stuff I got away with as a kid) and it actually didn't taste too bad, not great but drinkable... especially after letting it sit and most of the sediment settled.

I say go for it!

I kinda like chardonnay grapes to eat, kinda small though. What you got there son is a lot of grape juice, that ain't makin' good wine.

I'm not drinking any if you stomp the grapes with your feet.

Hey Supe, we've got a winemaking place very close to our house. The Cellar, I think, on Greenwood Ave here in Seattle. You might try contacting them.

I'd be interested in some grapes, if you want to get rid of some...

Yep, make some grappa, although it's illegal to do any "home distilling" in the US...
