so I cancelled my membership to Rennlist...

all it is over ther are cheap ass people who think they know everything...I am not gonna pay to be a part of that. Besides, only thing a paid member can do is post for sale items in a forum...not like it would sell for anything near it;'s value. Anyone else frustrated with the way that board has gone to to the crapper?

I started out on the porschephiles mailing list back around 1993 or so. Very small community of about 200 people back then (world-wide and all Porsche makes on one mailing list!!). Following Stan's issues, porschephiles morphed into "porschefans" and then that fell apart and rennlist came into being. I was really disillusioned with rennlist from the beginning, so I never joined and pretty much faded away. I came over to pelican back in 2003 and have been happy ever since.

Never bothered with Rennlist. Got really turned off by the heavy-handed moderation before I even attempted to sign up.

Unlike rennlist, over here we just don't think we know everything, we are convinced we know everything!

I'm with you, I hate that stupid fee. If the business model don't work for them then do something else, don't charge your customers for a service that obviously don't cost them a penny (the posting on the items for sale thread).

BTW you can't even change your signature if you're not a member!

But I participate and people in the 964 forum is quite nice.

That reminds me of that store I think its called BuyDirect, they wanted $3,000 for the privilege of being part of their family... total BS.

Pelican model is excellent. I have spent way more money in Pelican in the form of online shopping than any other store on the web.

Finally I get to rant about it... (I feel better now )

The only reason I go over to the 'other side' is for the 996 forum, for some reason that doesn't seem very active on Pelican. I won't pay for membership though over there though. I respect this site for the amount of free advice and in return buy 99% of my Porsche parts from here. I've even bought some Mercedes parts for my girlfriends car from here.

It strikes me as a great idea to host a free forum on a particular topic on a site that sells parts associated with it. Reminds me a bit of a motorcycle store when I was back in the UK that had a coffee shop and snack bar where folks could hang out and talk bikes all day.

You and me both. The "technical forums" over there remind me of a clique of high school girls all bragging about their expensive new clothes, only it's the same guys over and over bragging about how much money they dumped into their aging 20-year-old cars. There's very little objective technical information passed around anymore, which is sad. It used to be quite informative. No more, now it's just a cheerleading session for Vitesse and Rennbay and their other sponsors. Nothing against those guys, but it'd be nice to hear some HONEST, OBJECTIVE criticism - not just the same old "OMG they're wonderful" crapola. Everytime someone tries to say anything that isn't glowing about a sponsor, they're either chastised or banned. The "groupthink" mob mentality over there is really tiresome.

OT over there is totally worthless. RandyV is the worst moderator I've ever come across on any forum. How he still holds that job after the piss-poor job he does is beyond me. Maybe he's got some dirt on John or something - who knows. Blatant favoritism, selective rule enforcement, inaccessibility, hiding behind his title, etc. It's ridiculous. Maybe he's a good guy in person or whatever but he completely sucks goat balls as a moderator - especially on a PAID forum. I haven't been over there in months and don't miss it a bit. My only regret is that I wasted so much of my time there to begin with. I do miss a lot of the people though - there were some really great individuals on that board, but I suspect if any of them wanted to chat, they could find me. I occasionally PM someone over there, but I'm done posting and I won't be renewing my membership. It's $17 I'd rather blow on beer - I'd get more use out of the beer anyway.

Pelican rocks. Way better crowd here overall - maybe it's because people (generally) tend to be maybe a bit older or more mature or whatever, but I love this place - and I support Wayne's business as a result.

That whole "raising money for Stan" left a bad taste in my mouth and that is the exact reason that when rennlist started asking for money, I was out of there.

I never knew what actually happened to Stan. Porschephiles was fun when it was really small. Remember Ted Matsumura?

Has it been that long? Another "Porschephile". What DID happen to Stan?

That list was great and was one of the reasons I got my '73S. I hardly knew anything about fixing cars, but being able to ask others how to troubleshoot stuff gave me the confidence to buy a then 20 year old car. I can't imagine what people did pre-internet. Heck, I can't imagine relying on a 9600 baud modem!

Rennlist has some excellent 993 tech info and it's far better than the meager info on this site's 993/964 section. I agree that most of the crowd over there is a wine & cheese one. But there are some DIY diehards and track rats over there and it IS the place to go for 993 tech help. I think it's well worth the membership fee. I know I have saved many thousands of dollars because of it.

I was on "porschefiles' way back in the early 90's and followed it as it progressed through it's various forms; I even paid for a one-year membership wen they started that mess. Over time, rennlist took on a very "PCA" whine and cheese feel, so I bailed.

Yeah that's right -- the moderators here, particularly the OT Mods are da bomb! They would NEVER take advantage of their power...

In all seriousness, it seems that Pelican has a more active 911 section, while Rennlist has more 944 users. Not saying anything about which is better, just saying which side gets more traffic. The Rennlist DE/Racing forum is a bit more active than the Pelican DE forum as well...

I post in both quite actively, and see them as being complementary of each other.

Oh, and BTW: The membership fee gets you more than just the ability to post classifieds. It does get you space for your own website, access to posting pictures in your own gallery, and an email account.

Both are part of the online Porsche community, so while both aren't perfect (though Pelican comes close... ) they are both assets to Porsche enthusiasts.

-Z-man.

I've tried a few other forums (Rennlist and Mazda3forums), but they pale in comparison to this one. I'm going to hang around here until you guys get sick of me and kick me off!

To quote my good friend Red Baron, "attitude is a reflection of leadership."

John D, Adrian and all the rest run it just like they want it to be. It's a shame so many people tolerate that. Wayne & ZMan are light years above that. Thanks again for a great job guys.

Same here. I go to the 964 forum only and that is great.
