Porsche Planning to Double Sales in 5 Years` TimePorsche`s success is best described by the fact it earns around 28,000 euro per one sold car, while Volkswagen makes 332 euro. Karmen Horvat K.Č Photo: archive Porsche leadership is planning to double its income in the next 5 years, i.e. from 10 billion dollars planned for this year to 21.3 billion dollars planned for 2012. Annual sale is supposed to rise in the same period from 99,000 to almost 200,000 cars, Business Week reports. Porsche`s success is best described by the fact that it earns around 28,000 euro per one sold car, while Volkswagen, for instance, makes 332 euro. In 1992, Porsche was a step away from bankruptcy and analysts prognosed that Porsche will never survive. But, last year, Porsche purchased a control package in Volkswagen, wold`s fourth car manufacturer. High-performance models and quality fabrication are credited for these results, as well as “affordable” prices.

Time to sell the Porsche... Next they will have a lease program and every high school student will be driving one like BMWs and quality will be in the tank.

I'll trade you a slightly-crisped 951 for it. . .

They'll have to go with a higher production model. The new 4 door will probably help, but I wonder if rumors of the affordable hatchback sports car are true? A cheaper, "back to basics", modern 944 could be a real hit.
I'm sure this announcement will draw the inevitable crap, but I just don't understand. Porsche has continued to build some of the greatest sports cars on earth. If they had the chance, everyone here would turn over their SC or Carrera for a new 997 GT3. Hell, 90% of you would probably trade for a Cayman. The way I see it, I would love to have a Porsche option to choose from. If I'm buying an expensive SUV, I could consider the Cayanne, the fastest and best handling SUV on the market. If I'm considering a sedan, I could consider the Panamera, soon to be one of the fastest and best handling sedans on the planet. What the hell is the problem? They haven't dilluted their sports cars, they have infused that spirit into other markets. I see that as a good thing.

There were rumors for a while of a mid-engine, air-cooled small roadster - almost like a modern slant on the 914, with a price between $30k-$40k. I was really hoping that rumor would prove to be true.
I don't like it either, but I respect Porsche for understanding that they have to do what they need to in order to survive. The enthusiast market isn't enough to sustain a high-end sports car company. They've been down that road several times. Everytime I see a Cayenne I sort of shake my head and groan, but I realize it's the money pumped into Porsche's coffers by the yuppie poseur owners of those b*astardized vehicles that keeps the company solvent and funds their racing programs. So it serves a purpose. Yes, you can call that "whoring out" or "selling out the marquee", but ultimately do the ends justify the means? In this case, I would say probably.

Gee, if they really had wanted to double their sales, they could have priced their coupe, the Cayman, under their convertible, the Boxster. What kind of lame as pricing is it to have done it the way they did? Does any other manufacturer do that? Money, money, money.

See the test of both in the March 2007 Car and Driver, where the Jeep measured higher roadholding (.87 v. .90), and the Jeep was faster, too. C&D's conclusion: "It seems pathetic that the ($133K) Turbo S can't outrun a $40,800 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8...and has a back seat no more accomodating than a Honda Accord." |

Although admittedly the Cayenne doesn't suffer the stigma of reasonable cost.
For the amount of depreciation the Cayenne suffers in one year, you can buy the Jeep outright! There are currently dealers offering brand new, unsold '06 Cayenne Turbos for $35,000 (or more) under sticker. Or you can buy used ones for $65,000 under what they sold for new. |

I agree SUVs are stupid, but obviously others disagree. I would expect the new Cayanne, with more power, would give the SRT8 a run for it's money. As for being fast and handling well, if I recall correctly a Cayanne will smoke most non-997 911s around the ring. Just saying........ ![]()

I can double Porsche sales in a year.
Just like Mercedes-Benz has a AMG badge..................Porsche badge every product they helped engineer. Would you like to see a Porsche badge on a Harley Davidson? It's possible. ![]() This has got to mean they are going econobox GTI-ish next.

My understanding is the bigger Porsches will be hybridized soon, to lower carbon emissions. The 911 and Boxster cars will be untouched, though it's possible they'll go back to slightly smaller engines. The $35K profit per car? must be due to the 911, where they surely have their biggest margin. The Boxster remains their best value--and some prefer the mid-engine.

That's what I don't understand. Many people on here own SUVs, so why not a Cayanne that is much more fun to drive? Many own sports sedans, why not a Panamera to give the M5 a run for it's money? Porsche is a company, they're in it to make money. Fortunately they are able to do so while building some very desirable cars.
The old-schoolers need to face facts. Selling parts to support your SC will not keep Porsche in the black.

If Porsche doubles their sales it will not be by selling lower priced cars. Think more like a new 928 to compete with the Quatroporte, something to compete with the M class Merc, a few variations on the Panamerica. The days of an affordable 914-ish Porsche are long gone.
