Met Al Franken Tues. night:
Went to a meet-and-greet for AF the other night at a house here in MN., I had a date and she'd been invited to it. He gave his standard stump speech, promising an end to all bad things and free healthcare for all, plus he's going to stop global warming.
![]() He was quite funny, of course, with a lot of good old-fashioned Jewish humor, (it was a crowd of his oldest friends and HS classmates from St. Louis Park), he had me rolling with a jab at Bill O'Reilly and other jokes. His delivery is as good as it gets, IMO. I got my moment w/ him afterwards and asked him how it could be fair to blue-collar working Americans like myself to allow tens of millions of Mexicans that have snuck into the country to stay and flood the labor market w/ low-cost workers. He did not have an answer, but he babbled something about enforcement at the workplace, etc... I asked him who was going to enforce the new laws he supports when the U.S. govt. cannot or will not make a good-faith effort to enforce current law regarding illegals in country. I told him that real enforcement was a joke and that he knew it, I knew it, so what's the point of BS'ing? He suddenly got in a hurry to leave for his next appointment, (stop on the checkbook tour), I had him stumped I do believe. He is one hell of a nice guy and like most liberals his heart is in the right place, but hold onto your wallet Minnesota if this guy gets elected somehow. ![]()

I missed this one. Is he trying to fill Jesse's shoes as governor? Is he a serious candidate?

He is a candidate, I don't know if I would call him serious. He used to be a lot funnier if you ask me, and it has nothing to do with his politics.

He is running for Senate in '08, and he just might win. MN. is one kooky-ass state when it comes to politics.

He's still relevant? Failed on the radio, so he decided to jump into the policical fray?
I agree, he used to be funny. Now I wish he could just fade away........

By odd coincidence, the last 3 guys to hold this senate seat have been Jewish. (MN. is basically Scandinavia, ethnically speaking). AF said that "he didn't think that Minnesota was ready for a gentile in that senate seat..."
He's still funny. ![]()

He shouldn't have given up his comedian job. Hopefully, Minnesota will choose better than AF.

I'd agree with Joe (how often does that happen?) that if he stumbled that a question like that, then he's going to have trouble with the hard questions. From my perspective, your inquiry was a good example of teeing the ball up high. And I think he knew the answer. We're not going to fix the illegal immigration problem by loading up with federal enforcement folks and fences, as long as the employer community has such deep love for those workers. Quite frankly, this is a job for a true socialist, and a job that would be a bit entertaining for a true socialist. Make some documentation rules, and a reliable identity verification process, and then HAMMER employers who do a less than diligent job of ensuring their workers are all lawfully employed.
That, folks, is how it's going to happen. IF it's going to happen, which it won't. You guys who love commerce are getting what you wished for. It's a harsh commercial reality that illegal workers are beloved by industry, and money is what fuels this nation, not public welfare. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

I was just thinking about you guys today! My best back to you.
I even softened him up w/ a joke of my own, we were all wearing name tags so I introduced myself as "an Irish Jew from Mpls..." He was stunned for a second and then grinned from ear-to-ear. ![]() He was talking about going to Iraq on USO tours, (apparently he has been several times). His wife didn't want him to go anymore because of the danger, and said, "Why do you have to go there? Bill O'Reilly doesn't go." He replied, "That's not fair, honey. He has no talent." ![]() ![]()
