The right tools for the job...
Currently, outside my office window, the maintenance person at our building is cutting down a tree.
WITH A HAMMER AND CHISEL!!! He also has tied the top of said tree to the trunk of another tree so that when it falls, the tree doesn't damage the building. This is a bit concerning since the tie he is using looks like twine...see for yourself ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

How disappointing. When I read the title of this thread, I thought it was related to the New Girlfriend, New Technique thread. Darn.

I'm no lumberjack, but I've dropped a few trees. If you can't pick at least which quadrant the thing's going to fall to, you shouldn't be allowed to use cutting tools anyway

The guy I posted the pic of drops 'em on a dime. But he's no lumberjack either...he's an Oregon logger...a "cutter". Too bad the pic doesn't show all of his saw...a 36" bar....

Imagine......working hard for eighteen hours in the heat of the day.....and then go home smelling like the worlds best car freshener. A bit of related trivia: Another closely related occupation are the "Hookers." Anybody think they know what task Hookers perform? Oh, an yeah. An experienced Faller can point the tip of the tree in any direction you like. Certainly within a foot.

To "fallers" and "hookers" add "choke-setters" and "cruisers" - all lumberman terms that sounds suspiciously, well, like they have something to do with that crazy thread that discusses whacking a womans privates during intercourse...
Funny story: Years ago, my little brother, Lionel, headed up into the forest to cut a Christmas tree for my parents ($5 buys a permit). He took his four wheel drive and got way way back on the logging roads into pretty deep forest. He finally selects a tree and then realizes he has forgotten his saw... Lucky for my parents, Lionel had his 9mm with him. He emptied about two clips into the base of the tree before it finally toppled. Drug this beautiful tree with its exploded/fractured/shot-to-heck base back to Mom and Dad's house. As with all holidays in our family, this too was memorable... angela

I had to drop a dead palm tree in my front yard last weekend. We used to cut down a lot of trees when I was a kid and I knew what I needed to do.
I busted out my massive 16" blade, Craftsman Chainsaw and notched out where I wanted the tree to fall, I was delighted it fell exactly where I planned it to go. I guess I was paying attention when I was a teen. How did this turn out? No more reports?

The Aftermath
Looks like he finished off a few of them this way...
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I didn't see any blood or body parts under the 'saplings', and the building looks unscathed, so I think the guy made out ok. He's not back at it yet this morning...my bet is he is looking for some scissors to slice these into more manageable sizes. ![]()
