especially considering the high interest rates were largely the result of Carter appointing Paul Volcker head of the Fed, where he remained for 25+years because he was doing a good job.

I don't know. We've visited Cuba twice and spoke to many locals while there. It's not paradise - but it certainly isn't hell! It has a certain bucolic innocence to it that we quite enjoyed.

And personally I think fewer cars on the road is a good thing. You have to see Cuba in the round. Of course communism is deeply flawed, but go to Las Vegas and tell me the alternative isn't also deeply flawed. I'll take Havana over Las Vegas any day - all day.

But if you really wanted to change the place the embargo is really the stupidest way to go about it. By isolating the place you give it's leaders breathing room and legitimacy. Embargos never work. Look at Iraq or Burma for example. "Constructive engagement" is a far better policy for dealing with rogue regimes. Trade with Cuba and travel there, and the place would start to open up all by itself, and the regime will lose its legitimacy very rapidly.

The title of this thread would indicate that more proof is somehow necessary. I'm confused.

A lot of the things Carter wanted to do would have served this country well. People couldn't hear it then, and won't hear it now.

When gas was 75 cents, he wanted a 25 cent tax to put towards public transportation.

He created tax incentives for alternative energy research and use. Of course that had to go !

Clean air and water ? Rubbish ! Asking people to conserve ? Un American for sure ! Foreign relations ? What a BUBBA. There have been worse presidents. All he lacked was balls, which is all some presidents have for brains. Followers love that though.

Mr. Carter was a lousy president.

He was almost universally praised for being a great ex-president with all of his humanitarian work, and I think that went to his head.

Instead of continuing his humanitarian work, he has decided to re-open his mouth, and remind us of why he was such a lousy president.

He would be better off to close his mouth, and build some more homes. Maybe in New Orleans.
