I yelled at someone to slow down yesterday doing probably around 30 on my residential street - they just waved at me. I was standing there with my 2 1/2 year old on his little bike next to the road. 30mph isn't that fast but it is on small side street with lots of kids.

It is the same old problem of how to get folks to just slow the heck down.

I would love to setup a Radar gun and a web cam like this...LOVE to...

Good man! World needs more like you.

As the great one once said, 'This a neighborhood, this ain't no residential district!'

HardDrive 09-17-2007 04:15 PM

I have thought of doing exactly the same thing. I can't believe how fast some of the jerks in our neighborhood drive.

Nice one man.

mikester 09-17-2007 04:24 PM

Does that radar gun you have linked have some sort of PC software that allows you to do what you're doing? How are you getting the image of the radar readout and the picture of the car at the same time?

In residential neighborhoods, this kind of thing drives me nuts. There are a series of hilly streets that i run up and down near my house on my daily run; VERY often, the residents of the street - everyone from teenagers to middle aged truck drivers - FLY up and down the road. And we are talking about blind crests, where when you are coming up the hill, you can't see what's over the other side. Kids and dogs frequently play all over the place in the neighborhood. I just can't believe that some people have such entitlement issues that they don't care how fast they drive with kids playing on the street in their own neighborhood.

What I'm doing is pretty low-tech.

I have my camera set on "sport" mode to take continuous pictures while the trigger is down.

I clock the cars with the radar as they approach. If they are speeding significantly, I start snapping pics of the car... usually get 3-4. After they pass, I snap a picture of the display on the radar gun.

I'm just getting the hang of it. I went higher res, and I'm starting to make out the plates. By the time I finished tonight I was getting pretty good.

If I zoom in a bit more and watch the camera's display, I think I can get a pretty clear image.

I'm lucky. I live at the end of a cul-de-sac so if anyone speeds past my house they're going to run into my neighbor's front yard.
I like your idea though, I hope you manage to get some results without pissing your neighbors off.

Any of the neighbors I hang out with are pissed about how fast people have been driving since the road was re-paved in June. A couple of them walked by tonight and were very encouraging of the endeavor.

I was originally going to post pics of anyone doing 65+, but there are just too many of them. I settled on 70 kph as the cutoff. If you are going that fast, you really are being an arsehole... neighbor or not.

Anyone else notice that someone ranked this thread with one star as in terrible? It would appear he likes and approves of speeding in residential areas and doesn't like the idea of getting caught.
Naw, no one here could be that much of a low-life. He probably doesn't have an illegally loud exhaust either ;)

I'm gonna rank it to bump it up a tad.

My moms street is 25 mph. But people drive 40 to 50 on it all the damn time. I was about to write a letter to the Omaha police.

slakjaw 09-18-2007 06:31 AM

Any advise when I do write the police dept? I am going insane watching these people take off from the stop sign like its a rag race reaching 40 or 50 and still accelerating past moms house. in a 25 mph zone.

It makes me want to get out my Mosan and put a FMJ through their motor.

Jake,

Hows the "hunting" been today?

Jims5543 09-18-2007 07:32 AM

I have been yelled at 3 times in 10 years in my subdivision. This is the funny part, I drive at 25 almost all the time. That is the speed limit, I get tailgated all the way through the place almost every day because I am going too slow. I have pulled over and let the tailgater go by as they go 50+ and I continue at my 25.

One time an old man walking on the sidewalk yelled at me in my RX7, its noisy but I know for a fact I was going 27 MPH because my tach said 2700 RPM in 2nd gear (this is idle speed for a rotary but noisy) I slammed on my brakes and stopped in about 10 feet and asked him how fast he thought I was going because my speedo said 27. He just told me to go to he11.

The second one was in my MINI I turned the corner by my house and accelerated through 1st gear at about 30% throttle, the car was new to me and I liked the supercharger whine I was going maybe 20-25 MPH and a new neighbor was in his front yard started screaming at me cursing and all. I stopped, backed up, and asked him what his problem was, he told me he has a 4 y/o and I am going to kill him with my driving. I told him I live 5 houses away and I really am not into pissing off my neighbors by speeding.

I followed him and his wife through the place on many occasions and they would tear away from me doing my 25. My guess was they were doing 40-50.

The last time was at 10:30 at night, I was in a rush the neighborhood was empty and I was doing 35. Some lady ran out of her driveway in front of my car screaming at me. I got out of my car for this one. She told me her kids were playing, I apologized and told her mine were in bed where they belong. I also told her that during the day I always slow down to 20 in front of her house because her kids think it is funny to jump in front of cars and make them stop. I felt I was safe hurrying at 10:30 at night but that from now on I would only do 20 in front of her house 24 hours a day.

I always do and when in my RX7 or Porsche a low gear is selected.

BTW- I have followed her and her husband and they both do 35-45 on a regular basis through the place.

My next door neighbor is the Ex HOA president and flies through the place weaving around kids playing and never slowing.

I just keep doing my 25 MPH with tailgating neighbors.

I'm at the office today, so no hunting. My plan was to go back down with my lawnchair, radar gun & bag of chips right after work.

However, I just got off the phone with the producer for an afternoon (province wide) radio show. Being interviewed at 540pm. They had lots of questions about the Rothesay Freedom Militia & Chowder Club

Word travels fast... the site hasn't even been up a whole day

When I walk my dog I'm always thinking that it would be fun to carry a basket ball that I could accidentally let roll out into the road, but the ensuing carnage would probably not be good.

Cornpanzer 09-18-2007 08:08 AM

I live on a popular cut-through street that bypasses a busy town intersection. Our speed limit is 25mph and we also have a lot of kids and seniors walking on the street since we dont have sidewalks.

I see the same stuff every day. What really infuriates me is that the local school busses that shift into third gear right in front of my house. Third gear is 30+ mph in these busses!

I regularly have people at 50+ mph on the street because they need to make sure that thier shortcut gets them in front of the people who took the normal route.

Especially frustrating is that people will speed on my street and then drive 10 mph UNDER the limit on the main road into town. I know because I am always stuck behind them.

If nothing else, you will get some personal satisfaction from this project. Hope it helps slow people down on your street.

One thing I have noticed is that folks who walk their neighborhoods are much more sensitive to how fast people are driving.

When you walk, you notice how many kids are playing in yards, how many dogs there are, how many people are sloooowly backing out of their driveways.

You really notice how many risks there are, and how that 10 mph can mean all the difference in having an accident where the hapless driver will be quoted saying "They came out of nowhere, I didn't even see him/her/it coming."
