Very cool. I live on a dead end road that tees right in front of my house; if you go straight through the tee, you go up my driveway. There is only one house on the tee to the left, and nine on the tee to the right. The road is barely wide enough for two cars and there is no striping of any kind. Lots of driveways with kids and dogs and what not playing around on the road before the tee.

I've lost track of the number of friendly conversations I have had with ass holes flying down that road. Some have missed the corner and have wound up in my front yard. 10-15 mph is about right; I bet some of them hit 40-50. My typical conversation goes like this:

"That's pretty fast to be driving down our road, there."
"Bite me."
"Tell ya what. If you hit one of those kids or something, call the cops."
"What? I don't get it... I'm sure..."
(Cutting the ass hole off) "Because I won't call them. If you call 'em, and they get here quick enough, they just might save your life."

Like some of you have mentioned in your own situations, it's pretty tough to get the cops to come out or to patrol our neighborhood. Same lame excuses, too. It might be kind of cool to get out there and do something like you are and forward the results to them.

I sent the link to the local PD, and told them that I'm being interviewed about it this evening. It will be interesting to see what their reaction is.

Probably give you a ticked for speeding while going to the radio show! :)

Good for you Jake, I'm sure you'll become quite the local celeberity/hero. Just this weekend I was driving to a friends house to play guitar. He lives 12 miles away on a winding mountain road that "flat landers" are constantly speeding on.

I was driving the LandCruiser, so I was moving s-l-o-w and a Suburban comes flying up, right on my a$$. I pull into a turnout 1/2 mile up and he flys by me honking and giving me the "finger". He was probably doing 80-85 on a 2 lane twisting road. I pull into the market 10 miles up the road to pickup beer and lo and behold, there's the gold Suburban in the parking lot. I grab a six pack, get in line and there's the guy at the cashier with his son (maybe 8 y.o.) buying a gallon of ice cream.

I was still a bit pissed and said "So that's what the big rush was for, ice cream?" Well, he goes off on me saying "F-you,..suck my di*k,..what are you, a f*king cop,..etc" right in front of everyone including his kid. I really felt sorry for the pathetic loser.

I go outside and start walking towards him and he jumps in his car and locks his doors. I told him "After your vulgar, verbal display in front of your kid, the last thing he needs is to see is his Father get his a$$ kicked." Man some people suck..

Nice work. Subscribed.

Update:

Did the interview after work, it was pretty funny. Since then, I've had another 300 unique visitors to the site.

When I drove up to my house last night, I saw police lights. They had pulled someone over about 100ft from my house. When my wife and I were walking the dogs, they pulled someone else over.

Before it got dark, I spent about 10-15 minutes at the end of the driveway with the radar gun. None of the pictures turned out, it was too dark. But in that timeframe, 3 people honked, waved or gave thumbs up as they went by.

They replayed the interview this AM.

I have a dozen emails & phone messages from people along the road and in the area. All were positive, some wanted to know if they could help, or borrow the radar gun.

I've also had calls from two TV station and two radio station.

Pretty effective for $80 and a couple hours

That is really cool! We feel your satisfaction :D

CJFusco 09-19-2007 05:25 AM

Wow, glad to see this has taken off, Jake.

Joeaksa 09-19-2007 05:55 AM

Excellent! Do you rent your equipment out? I have a place about 100 yards from my house where it needs to be used!

I love your solutions for getting ones picture removed from your site. While I doubt you'll see much interest from the offenders I applaud and respect that you have thought of an unselfish way to give back to your community.

Well done.

Speed bumps slow 'em down but we have another problem. The kids like to do burnouts on the spreed bumps at 2am. It's really nice hearing an engine at redline and tires squealing right in front of the house :(.

Congrats on a job well done, NFN.

Funny how we (at least, those who have posted on this thread) all seem to be in agreement on this topic: pushing for adherence/enforcement of reasonable speed limits on public thoroughfares in residential areas--even calling on cops to come out and enforce those limits by giving tickets, if need be. Yet some of the people on this thread are the same ones (on another recent thread) crying out for total freedom of passage (and saying the gubmint has no right to restrict our actions to do whatever we want on public highways)... Doesn't sound like some of us are applying reason on a consistent basis. Am I misunderstanding something?

Jake, I love your website's list of how to get one's pic's removed. Especially the charitible donations and community service. Great job! :)

I think residential areas require more restraint. It's possible that if you don't have kids you might not fully understand this issue.

I had a little talk with a teenager (and his mom) up the street after he made a few high speed runs by my house. I told him I like fast cars too and suggested that if he wanted to see what happens when he floors it to do it on a larger street... just not in the neighborhood. His mom freaked out. I told her he was going to do it whether she liked it or not. It wouldn't bother me to see him zip by at 65 in the 50 zone vs what he did, which was around 50 on our street that's posted 25.

When my daughter was about 5, I had gone across the street to talk to a neighbor. She came out and was about to cross the street when a guy came around the corner on a sport bike, dropped it into 1st and wound it out. He was probably doing 60 when he passed between us. He pulled into a driveway about four houses up the street. My neighbor's wife watched my daughter while he and I had a chat with the rider. He made the mistake of telling me to "relax." It's the closest I've come to punching somebody in the face in a long time.

Thanks, unfornutnately I've decided to take that part down, pending further advice from my lawyer/father-in-law. Apparently Canadian extortion laws are loosely written, and he just wants to double check.

Except that you could have ended up in jail, I think you should have hit him and then said "relax".

LeeH:

I think it's quite possible you don't understand where I'm coming from. I have 2 little kids. The "elder" is 2.5 yrs-old, which is prime run-overable age: old enough to be mobile, yet too little to understand the real dangers of a road. I also think you misunderstand my position, in general, as I'm in agreement with reasonable conduct in residential neighborhoods. In fact, I'm for reasonable conduct elsewhere, too (as demonstrated in my posts in other threads). It's some others on this board/thread that are not-so-consistent, IMO.

GothingNC 09-19-2007 04:14 PM

In my old neighborhood the old lady that lived next door would roll a large beach ball into the middle of the road if she saw someone flying down the road at an excessive speed.

After about a week the street was covered with dozens of skid marks:D

Now what about those pizza delivery guys blasting down the residential street:mad:

Well I made the cbc.ca news website:

I think this may be the best opening line ever

The newspaper came by this eveing too. Lots of great emails from neighbors, and a few stopped by tonight in the brief time I was out there.

People were driving s l o w

Zef 09-19-2007 04:24 PM

Look like all have the same problem...I built my house in a cescent to avoid that....But on the remaining near streets...people go extremely fast...It's a dangerous situation...you never know when a kid will go by between two street parked cars...
