When someone doesn't cooperate and fights with the police, they need some recourse. Billy club or taser. Which do you think they should use? Or do you think they should kill him with kindness?

I think he was a Moveon.org kinda guy, if not a plant. Kerry seemed plenty willing to answer his questions and Kerry's answers even seemed reasonable. Political bent aside, I don't think a speaker should interrupt the cops when it becomes a disturbance issue. Doing so ensures more such behavior and probably hurts' the cops' ability to maintain some sort of order.

When I was living in Germany, George H.W. Bush was at an economic conf. there when an American college student caused a ruckus, a lot like this kid, except this was no student Q&A thing, but rather a real press conf. Bush actually told the guy off, called him rude for his disruption and embarassed the kid before the goons ushered him out. Hecklers are always a good chance for the speaker to show he can think on his feet. But there's a fine line between answering them and encouraging more such behavior. I know, had I been at that event, and especially if I were waiting for my turn at the mic, I'd have been pretty pi$sed at someone asking multiple questions and refusing to leave.

Well, I already said I would prefer the club to risking death.

Maybe there should be some sort of "pinhead medicalert" bracelet, so the cops would know which means to employ?

Moveon could sell them by the tens of thousands.

Sorry disagree with you all, are you telling more 2 - 4 cops could not take the guy to the ground and handcuff him? Then they don't deserve to be cops.

If you watch it enough they actually taze him while he's handcuffed, he's got a lawsuit there for sure.

I guess being high on blow had nothing to do with the heart attack, eh? Again, if you have a heart condition, it's all the more reason to not behvae in a way that's likely to get you tased. If you're a hemophiliac, you probably shouldn't start bar fights or resist arrest to the point you get tackled and scuffed up. Someone who's non-compliant and unpredictable because of drugs is lucky to not get shot. Why should the cops get bruised and beaten by someone like that? The taser seems like a pretty good medium for stopping someone short of shooting them. What's the alternative? Keep arguing with the subject, thinking he'll become rational? The one time I've been arrested and the several where I came very close to it, at no time were the cops even reaching for their tasers or guns or nightsticks. I complied with their orders and each time, I came away unscathed.

Sure, they could have taken him down. But it would have been a lot more violent than tasing him. The article said only one hand was cuffed when they tased him. Even if he's fully cuffed, unless he leg irons on, he could still put up some resistance. Why should the cops have to put up with that? It was clear the guy was not going to stop resisting until he was overwhelmed by force. If anything, the era of cell phone cameras has encouraged idiots like this guy because he'll never get the real skull thumping he so richly deserves.

stevepaa 09-18-2007 10:50 AM

Well maybe the taser has just a little too much punch right now or do you discount all taser deaths to abnormal conditions.

Mule 09-18-2007 10:52 AM

Handcuffs with a baton under the elbows & an officer on each side & he's coming along peacefully.

rouxroux 09-18-2007 10:52 AM

Probably "campus police" finally getting a chance to use their toys?

Rick Lee 09-18-2007 10:59 AM

I think tasers have settings on them. I don't know at all how they figure that stuff out. But I would wager there were a lot more deaths or at least serious injuries when cops had nothing but the nightstick or the gun to deal with an uncompliant subject. If I were a cop, I would really rather use a taser on someone than get scuffed and bruised fighting with them, in which case the perp. is much more likely to be able to grab my gun. A taser keeps some distance, is pretty darn effective, is preceded by a warning and everyone knows what it means if they ignore that warning.

I could have taken him down with one of his thumbs, the point is if he is resisting take him to the floor, if he has a weapon (knife, bat, club) or is a danger to himself and others taze him. Appropriate force for the incident.

Ask him to walk.

But, be nice.

If he won't walk, walk him.

But, be nice.

If you can't walk him, one of the others will help you, and you'll both be nice.

I want you to be nice, until it's time to not be nice.

And how will I know when it's time not to be nice?

I won't. You'll tell me.
