Favorite McQueen Movie
Okay, I will try to post this poll one more time...
Even though most people my age don't even know who Steve McQueen was, thanks to the Porsche world, he has become an icon to me... as he seems to be to other Porsche guys (and other motorcycle guys, and gearheads in general). Just curious as to which McQueen roles the other Pelicans like...

You people are crazy; as cool as Le Mans is, it is hardly McQueen's BEST movie.
I love The Great Escape, but I have to admit that The Cincinatti Kid is growing on me...

Steve McQueen in a classic 911 and a 917 at Le Mans...not really the hardest choice I've ever faced.

Cannot just say one, he was a very diverse person.
Le Mans comes immediately to mind, but then so does Bullett and The Great Escape...

I voted for The Getaway...but Quincy Jones' "country style" soundtrack was corny and detracts from the film a bit....
The best soundtrack by far was Bullet's by Lilo Schiffen. Both The Sand Pebbles and Papillion were a bit too long, and could have been more effective had they been edited down a bit. The Cincinnati Kid was a very good film as was Thomas Crown Affair. |

Bullitt.
- best car chase ever with the Mustang and the Charger - great assassins - great a-hole - Jacqueline Bissett - filmed in SF - excellent plot & twists - nasty murders I've seen all those movies listed (although not recently), and I think Bullitt showcases McQueen's quiet cool better than any of them.

i'll put in a vote for 'the towering inferno'. he was great as fire chief halloran..didn't overplay the role and did a great service for the fire service in my opinion. i'm still waiting to see le mans. anyway, lots of great flicks he starred in, but thought he was great in this movie from the mid-70's.

"Soldier in the Rain" was another Classic. (McQueen & Jackie Gleason).
I liked his last film "Hunter" too. Some think it was a slapped-together POS, but I was only 10 or 11 when I first saw it, so it was pretty cool to me. The subway train scene is embedded in my memory forever! Of course, I naturally had to have that olive drab jacket with the orange liner (Airforce-style) after seeing it. |

Papillon is hands down the best film that McQueen was ever involved in, with The Sand Pebbles a close second.
Once the iconography is set aside, I never understood the attraction of Bullitt. The script always seemed a virtually indecipherable mess to me, punctuated by a car chase. Maybe its the 5 hubcaps the Charger sheds.... Much like Le Mans, come to think of it, which looks every bit like the indulgent, actor-turned-producer/auteur film it is with miles of footage in search of a story (never to be found...) Yet I still watch it several times a year with the volume turned up a bit too loud, so what do I know?... ![]() ![]() Tim |

I bet I haven't seen that movie in over 30 years, but it still hits me as one of the best movies McQueen ever made and definitely the best one for Gleason. I am off to Amazon right now to see if they have it for sale. Thanks for bringing back that memory.

don't recall that one. i'm surprised..i should. speaking of gleason, kurt..ever see a movie made about '53 starring him called 'gigot'? he was a deaf mute in 19th century france. outstanding sensitivity as an actor..not a speaking role, but he could speak paragraphs with his face.
