help us decide where to relocate....

michelle and i are planning on relocating this coming year......i'm shooting to be out of here by june of '08. we are both simply just tired of ohio weather and ohio in general, and we are going to sieze the opportunity to do this, because if we don't do it "now" we are never going to do it........

my sister lives in central north carolina so i'd like to be within a few hours of there, michelle is a disney kid and wants florida.......i will not move to florida, nothing against it personally, just too flat for my taste :)

we were looking into charlotte n.c. or charlston s.c, or somewhere in between.....personally i think charleston will be a little out of budget being it's right on the coast.

simple requirements that we have are civilization (meaning 15 minutes tops for starbucks or whatever), room for my 911 and fish tanks, and a safe area where she can go for her walks.

employment-wise.....pretty flexible, i can walk into most any audio shop and be hired on the spot for decent $$, shops are everywhere so i'm not even concerned about it.....

so let's hear some thoughts on some areas to check out, we are planning a full week in spring, most likely late april to check out some things firsthand and to secure a house, we will be renting for a year to figure out exactly where we want to buy.

i'm open to areas with a non-LA style cost of living :D

Asheville

How about Bloomington, IL? :p:p:p

I'm so lonely....

Hugh R 09-30-2007 06:51 PM

Lots of people moving to Charlotte. Nice area. Asheville is pretty nice as well. NC may be in my plans in about 10 years.

Great work area experiencing growth. Close to great forests and drives. Very decent weather. It's also a large area without being metro to a large city. Plenty of hunting a fishing close by.

Stutzdriver 09-30-2007 06:52 PM

Bell,

We are in much the same situation except that my only son will graduate from HS in June. I currently am employed by a company in the Columbia, SC area (Lexington) as the sales manager. I work from home 3 weeks, spend 1 week in Columbia. I have been working like this for 2+ years. We have spent the past 2 spring breaks and the week between Christmas and New Years as a family there. We have become very familiar with the area and are looking forward to the relocation.

Several good things about the Columbia area. State capital, USC (for the arts, college area) Good restaurants and plenty to do compared to the NE Ohio area. 1-1/2 hours to the coast, same to Charlotte, 6-7 hours to Orlando, Atlanta in less than 4. Housing cost is reasonable unless you want to live right on Lake Murray, Oh yeah, Lake Murray is beautiful. Great bar-b-que. Lexington boast some of the top public schools in the SE, tops in SC. My vote is for central SC!

Seems to be plenty of P-Car stuff going on in the area. My office is close th Doc's Porsche in Lexington, very well known shop and very active in the PCA. I have been to a local PCA meeting on a previous trip and everyone was very interested in me and when I might relocate.

Will the last person in OHIO please turn out the lights and lock the door, I personally can't waight to leave and there thousands who feel the same way! See you all in the south when we all arrive!

onewhippedpuppy 09-30-2007 06:55 PM

Wichita, KS?SmileWavy

Ok, maybe not. We can't compete with NC for scenery. However, we do have great jobs, low cost of living, and 90% of what big cities have to offer. Oh yeah, and I can make it from one side of town to the other, in rush hour, in about 20 minutes. Not bad for a metro area of almost 600k people. We've been picked in several "best places to live" pieces in national magazines, most recent I remember is Forbes.

URY914 09-30-2007 07:01 PM

Please don't come to Florida.

Nothing personal you understand.SmileWavy

Porsche-O-Phile 09-30-2007 07:08 PM

Come to Socal. We need more white folk. Not to mention people that know English as a first language.

Gogar 09-30-2007 07:11 PM

Charlotte is nice and has an airport. Asheville is great, too, but maybe a little less "metropolitan". If you hate hot summer, though, you might be bummed.
Knoxville, Chattanooga are nice.

Denver is nice. Plenty of friggin sports heros who need stereos out here. And a great airport. and some hills.

Aren't they supposed to be doing "Hollywood East" out there?

bell 09-30-2007 07:23 PM

i'd rather deal with a hot summer than a cold winter :)

out west isn't going to happen, i like denver....have a few friends who live in boulder, but we want to stay east coast.

i haven't looked into asheville......but i'm on it.....

Mr_Wizard 09-30-2007 08:06 PM

Wilmington NC is really nice. Can't beat coastal living. Hurricane season can suck but other than that, i have no complaints. Cost of living is reasonable.

Come to Charlotte! I've lived here all my life (23 years) and it's a great place. There's several Starbucks within 15 mins driving distance from my house! You're a half-hour to Lake Norman, plus we don't have the bad humidity problem like they do in Wilmington, NC! :D

Besides, the more Porsche folk here the better, IMO.

edited to add: Lots of people from Ohio move down here.

another vote for asheville...beautiful country, people are probably pretty nice, too. i'd go there before charlotte for sure.

Tim Walsh 10-01-2007 04:13 AM

Asheville, Raleigh, Charlotte, the Triad are all good places to live around here.

 Am I the only one here who likes living in a rural area in Ohio? I guess so. Bring on fall, then winter, it is time for a pleasant change.

TerryBPP 10-01-2007 05:24 AM

Charleston SC is actually cheaper than Charlotte now. My wife and I looked at houses their about 2 years ago and you could get a 3,000 SF 2 story house on any of the surrounding islands for around $300k.

The only issue is the high crime due to the surrounding low income popluation. That portion of SC is very poor.

My wife is from Charlotte and her mom just moved back there from FL. Housing prices are at their peak. Very good economy there right now.

Shoot me a pm and I can get you the name of her realtor. She came highly recommended.

Lothar 10-01-2007 05:30 AM

Here's a plug for Raleigh or much of the surrounding area.

2 hrs to the beach and 2 hrs to the mountains.
Three large lakes nearby and a bunch of smaller ones.
Three major universities.

You gotta consider, He is in CLEVELAND!! :p

berettafan 10-01-2007 06:00 AM

NC is in my future plans as well. Our beach community has been twisted into a mini-florida with overpriced condos and 10,000 sq ft. tacky tourist junk shops.

Gotta be a coastal area though for me. I'll travel to go trout fishing in the mountains but beyond that fresh water is for drinking and that's about it. Saltwater is a necessity.

Normy 10-01-2007 06:04 AM

My parents live in Asheville, where they moved to from Michigan when my dad retired in 1999.

-I think it is a nice place, and I recommend it overall, but there a few negatives. First of all, there is little "zoning" in that area. What this means is that you might be living in a $400,000 home of 3500 square feet with all the upgrades and a three-car garage, while the people right next door are living in a mobile home with an old truck up on blocks in the front yard. Also, though the winter is gentle...you still have winter. Figure on some snow every year, though it will be gone in a day. Finally, the police up there are heavily into "revenue enhancement". I've not had any run-ins with them during my visits, but my parents and brother sure have!

Asheville's downtown area is wonderful, and the place is growing rapidly. But right now there is only one real mall, and I think only one Wal-Mart and only a few other big-box stores. It really is still a fairly small place.

Good luck!

I was actually thinking that myself, but did not want to say it. ;):D:D

I guess for folks who like to live in a big city, Ohio might not have the nicest cities (Columbus is nice), but the small towns, suburbs and rural areas seem nice enough. Whatever though, everyone enjoys different lifestyles. I myself, could care less about how far the nearest Starbucks is. I and my wife are most happy at home enjoying our property or working on hobbies and we simply make a pot of coffee if we get the urge for some. ;):D

We just moved from Charlotte NC where we spent 5 years...

Charlotte is a nice place where day to day quality of life is very high. Relatively little traffic, nice parks, nice shops, restaurants, clubs. 2 Professional teams. Opera house etc.

Charlotte lacks character big time. Every 4-5 years they tear down buildings and put them up again. So everything is relatively new and a bit cleansed.

So family life is top. Commute is OK and it is easy to enjoy time with family. People are nice and welcoming.

There is not much diversity though. In the nice neighbourhoods everybody had 2.4 kids, works at Bank of America, sends their kids to Latin (insert here expensive private school), drives a Lexus SUV and a CLK convertible etc.

From Charlotte you can be at the beach in 3h (door to door to Sullivan's Island) or at Dragon in 2.5h.
There are several race tracks for DEs around the corner (Rockingham, CMP, VIR, Loewes, Road Atlanta, Roebling rd).

All in all we had a great time. We missed diversity the most and being Europeans we missed being around old stuff (difficult to explain).

We have always said that if Charlotte was a 3h flight from Europe we would have never moved.

Wilmington is a very nice place. You cannot beat the beach on your doorstep. If Charlotte lacks character the same (apart from a 1 mile square in downtown) is the same.

What I mean by lack of character is the fact that to go to the restaurant you go to the shopping mall.... etc.

Ashville by contract has a busy center with lots of things happening every weekend. It does not have the choice in shopping and entertainment that Charlotte offer, and the closest big airport is Charlotte itself.

Send me a PM if you have any questions....

Good luck

You could not pay me to live in Columbia, SC.

Jims5543 10-01-2007 11:34 AM

I like Asheville a lot. I am selling my vacation home 45 minutes southwest of Asheville. (regretfully) I liked Asheville because mostly of the downtown area. The architecture is quite old for the area, not European old but dating back to the late 1800's. Some of the buildings downtown were designed by NYC architects and it shows.

There are lots of shops and restaurants downtown, the only downside was all the meth heads. There were an alarmingly dense population of them panhandling on the street. Mostly 18-25 year olds and a lot of couples. It was really weird.

I preferred being 45 minutes from there in the sticks. By sticks I mean no real city life and none of the problems. Crime was zero and being close to a lot of National Parks and recreations areas made where I was at ideal for me, there was a downtown there as well just small, lots of little restaurants and shops, along with a Lowes, Wal-Mart and grocery stores. Everything I needed was in town about 5-10 minutes from my house with a city 45 minutes away.

I vote for outskirts of Asheville with Charlotte a close second.

Gene Wilkes 10-01-2007 11:48 AM

Go for the coastal areas! Gets very hot in Charlotte mid summer! Traffic sucks too!

masraum 10-01-2007 11:56 AM

Don't forget the biggest plus

Lots, and LOTS of NASCAR!!! :D

I've lived on the Gulf coast of FL and in NoVA. I think the east coast of the US is a great place to live.

osidak 10-01-2007 11:57 AM

Why are you selling jim

72doug2,2S 10-01-2007 12:05 PM

Move west young man!

Ashville is beautiful, but the further west you go, to a point, the more friendly the people are. I recently left the crowded east coast after 15 years for some Indiana elbow room.

-Nice people here.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...s/beerchug.gif

livi 10-01-2007 12:11 PM

I expect Sweden is out of the question. :D

We have free health care, sill and vodka for everyone!

The Gaijin 10-01-2007 12:11 PM

New York City is about the only place to live in this world. Other places are nice, and great to visit, but NYC is the best place to live.
