Get Tom drunk and have him sign the title.

Thunderbird is cheap.

What's your budget and what do you like?

How about a 944 with A/C sound?

No, I don't have one, just seems from what I've read to be one of the most affordable and practical Porsche buys.

New or used, price range?

I have to ask the obvious, why doesn't Tom help you find a car? Is he off at school? If so, one of us Clearlake Pelicans can help you inspect a car if you'd like.

I thought drinking lowered the "legal age" (in the south) and the wife being gone shoud be worth at least a few months

Seriously - look at used Honda Civics or Toyota Corollas. Make sure you change your air filters regularly and used good oil in the crankcase.

Actually, in Texas 17 is the official age, so Terry's safe from a legal standpoint, but I suspect not so much from Tom.

What are you looking for, what's your budget, and who's going to be paying the insurance?

Well if she's just turned 17 I would guess that a year from now she'll have just turned 18.

puppy does have a point though. As you probably know a car really needs matching to the type of person you are. A photo would definitely help us decide on an approprite vehicle. I would guess some may say that an idea of your hobbies and interests would help. After all we don't want to propose a vehicle with a tiny trunk if you need to haul, say, horse riding gear around.

Right guys?

Why do I feel guilty already?

If Tom's sister is as clever as I think she might be, then a dialogue with some of our more lecherous Pelicanheads might be amusing. I'll get coffee.

DOWN BOYS! Tom here...I have recommended the civic/corolloa approach (she won't have to wrnech on her own cars), so instead she is looking at something slightly larger. Z71 tahoe and some trucks. What is with chicks liking big trucks? And yes a 944 would be great, but I think she would like a 968 body stlye more. I would just steal it though.

Welcome sister!

Never mind the sillyness. Boys will be boys. Are we to assume you want a Porsche? Like mentioned the 944 or even a late 924 are nice cars as long as you don´t have to haul lumber or seven kids.

Tell us what you are looking for - you will get more adequate responses.

Still, a pic would not hurt of course...

Seriously though, if it were my sister, she wouldn't be getting a Porsche. Expensive to maintain, not as reliable, more demanding to drive. My wife hated my 951. If she doesn't wrench on it, it will suck her dry. Big brother might be willing to help out, but will you be around forever to fix it when it breaks?

I would say anything Japanese. Reliable, cheap to maintain, high quality, will run forever. If she likes the trucks/SUVs, it's impossible to beat a Toyota truck or 4Runner. Nissan trucks and Pathfinders are nice as well. Then there's the smaller SUVs, like the RAV4 and CRV. All are a good bet. Better MPG, better reliability, better to drive than American trucks and SUVs.

Wow, am I glad I don't have a sister that hangs out here!

Anyway, if your looking for a car that all you have to do is put gas into and get regular oil changes then the "econo-boxes" are really your best bet. If your are really looking at a truck, keep in mind that tires usually don't last as long as car tires, and they usually run twice as much!!

[Ok, I scrolled down to check the thread... Is it just me... Girls DID NOT look like that when I was 17!]

Back to the topic at hand:
Other things to consider are Insurance, econo-boxes run a lot cheaper than most trucks (especially Jeep) at least around here. And above all else, if you aren't going to be doing the work on the car, Honda shops don't usually (clearing throat)... "violate" female customers as much as other shops do when a woman brings in a truck. I'm not sure why, but have seen it happen way too many times!

just my .02 worth.
