DE weather watch
when do you start looking at the weather report for a future track/race/DE day? the long term starts at 10 days out and i know i can't hang my hat on that far off an estimate anyway.. but i cant look away, cant help myself. even checked the farmer's almanac on a hoot. check the internet weather site two, three times a day to see if the % or precip chance is a changin.... when is the radar images worth to start watching? any use more than a day or so off?
the 10 day forecast does not even take a crap shoot guess at the event i am watching for two weeks out. i continue to look at what they think the weather might be ten days from now, a day before i unload the trailer. i am sick and cant look away.. is it wrong to pray for no rain when we are at war? can my paranoia influence my luck to the bad? do you suffer from this ailment come every spring & fall after you've paid up? what makes this sickness better other than a rain free track day? nothing i says T$

Nothing wrong with doing a DE in rain. You will learn to transistion much smoother.

Unless you live in Hawaii or Arizona, the 10 day forecast means squat! I generally start giving the forecast a look perhaps 2-3 days prior. It really doesn't matter anyway since your money isn't refundable at that time. If this is your first year or two of doing them, having rain isn't such a big deal, your happy just to be there. After a couple of years, if its raining enough to lay on the track, I'm off. There isn't much to learn on a track your been running 100's of times in the dry and suddenly it soaking wet other then you can't go as fast. Although I feel confident in my wet weather driving, I've seen car to car mishaps happen that I don't need any part of.

Pacific Raceways, my local hangout, sits in such a weird little weather "hole" that you really can't start checking until you drive through the gate.

My last event was half dry, half wet. I look at the weather about a week ahead of time and shrug my shoulders if the weather looks like it'll suck.

Toby, I do the exact same thing! In fact, I was just heading to weather.com to check on the 28th. I love driving at the track in rain, but not at Mosport - it's just simply too dangerous because of high speeds and close concrete walls. I end up spending so much of the time puckered that it's just really not fun. To make things worse, Mosport sits in a bit of a glen which seems to be a weather zone unto itself. The weather report comes from the nearest town which is about 30km away and, other than large systems moving through, bears no resemblance whatsoever to the weather at the track. But on other tracks with generous run-off room it's a blast. A great way to learn how to regain control of your car when you lose it!

i know don, i know. thats why i did not jinx us all by mentioning venue or excact date... looking forward to hanging at the track with you again. a few of us will be heading up friday afternoon to stake out the BAP paddock area. we will try to save enough room if you want to set up with us. there are 4-5 of us doing the DE and a couple racing so i imagine the racers will find where the cool kids are hanging out on the playground and set up there. we will take the leavins.. look for my maroon truck and the grocery cart ms trailer and come find us. T$

Weather? At Willow Springs they have both kinds of weather - "hot" and "so-damn-hot-your-ass-will-be-branded-with-the-fabric-pattern-of-your-underwear-by-the-end-of-the-day hot".
![]() Rain? Forget it. I wouldn't go. At least not in a car I cared about.

Started raining two laps into our race two weeks ago at Buttonwillow. Luckily I didn't bend the car when I went off on lap 9.
I'm hoping it doesn't rain up at Infineon. It is a long drive home (would prefer that is dry as well...I won't have much/any tread left on the RA-1s afterwards). |
