I know there are members here on pelican. I'm interested in becoming a member. How do I join?

there is not much point in joining unless there area few members in your area - it is more of a driving group than a 'membership' group

I know there are some members on the east coast, and a few who did an epic drive out to the Calif. meeting one year from the midwest

Start your own group and call it a day.

There are a hand full of guys from the Chicago area that are members...that being said, they've driven their cars to California to participate in events.

No use joining unless you plan to be a particpant. Perhaps you just want a cool car decal or t-shirt (I have one).

I don't think anyone here is being a "bunch ass". It seems that there is a reputation that precedes R, and may affect people's opinions.

It's still a regional club. They have a lot of influence over the early 911s because so many of he members live close to the Excellence magazine office.

Travel budgets are pretty tight in the publishing industry these days and it helps if you can find local cars. R Gruppe has benefited from this relationship a great deal.

If you don't live in CA there is very little reason to join. All of the R Gruppe information is carried on the Early 911S Bulletin Board [URL="http://www.early911sregistry.org"URL]. The knowledge of that board is simply incredible.

I have actually spoken to Chris. He said he was assigning regional gruppe meisters to help support the group. He never mentioned that they were a California only group. In fact he said they had members in other parts of the country and have done driving "events" to Fla. I don't think he ever intended to take on the administrative burden of a formal club.

Are you guys saying that the RGruppe are a bunch of snobs because they turned you down? Or that because of a lack of administrative support they can't take members?

I'm all about driving my cars...ask me about the trips I made to bring each of my 911s home. I'm currently giving the 72 a narrow-bodied ST treatment complete with 2.7RS motor (not completely correct for an ST but loads of fun).

Now can someone tell me how to join the RGruppe so I can get those cool stickers, license frames and badges:rolleyes:

Sometimes humor gets lost in translation. I found the comments quite amusing but then you would have to know the history.

No one was poking fun at Rsquared. They were making fun of RGruppe's history. They are a club founded on "no attitudes" but history has shown otherwise. I'm sure to the founder's dismay. Oh well ***** happens.

Rsquared, Why don't you hook up with some of the members from Pelican in your area for some drives. It'll be the same difference. Maybe sponsor a cars and coffee get together on the weekend. Call it what you want.

Rsquared, we have a drive every month in Tennessee with several guys from Memphis that join us.(See MTFR on this board) We would love to have ya and we will be glad to give you a number of course we would have to start giving numbers to everybody since we only number the run (MTFR 1 2 3 4 so on and so forth) Shoot , we might even get some stickers made!!!:cool:

Dad and I were at MTFR #7. I was in the 85 Silver euro( I left because I came down with the funk), Dad was in the white Carrera S.

I will carefully tread into this and try to answer your questions.
The RGruppe are not a California only club. There are regions around the country. There is a Southeast region and if you want to shoot me a PM, I can put you in touch with the people who organize that region. If you make it to Rennsport, please stop by our corral and say hello.

Like RWebb mentioned, it is a very activity oriented club. The typical route to membership is to participate in the local RGruppe events and be enthusiastic about your early car.

To some of the rest of the responders, could you please find it inside yourself to not make snide comments about the RGruppe EVERY time it is mentioned on this board. First, none of us like to be stereotyped. I personally dont appreciate this negetive stereotype being applied to me because we have never met. I am sure that there are several hundred members who feel the same way. Second, I would bet that this entire stereotype is based on comments made entirely on the internet. I suspect that several of you "Regulars" have never met an RGruppe member in person. I would also bet that there is not one person on this forum who has not typed something on the web that has rubbed someone the wrong way.

I guess what it boils down to is I hope that the few individuals who admit they have an axe to grind can forgive and forget. Perhaps you have reason, perhaps you dont - but what good does it do to belabor the point. If you cannot let it go, could you maybe not reply to every question about the RGruppe with negetive energy. By taking the high road, this can be a friendlier place.

To be extra clear, I do not wish to get in a debate - this is a sincere request. I encourage other members to avoid commenting in a defensive way. I hope that I am not being presumptious in speaking for the Gruppe, but I felt it needed to be said.

If any of you guys are at Rennsport, stop by our parking corral or the Ramada parking lot across the street and say hello - look for our '59' tribute logo to Bob Snodgrass. There's a caravan driving down from the Midwest/EastCoast - should be fun!

Also, Hurley Haywood and Grady Clay accepted Honorary Member status with the club this year. Lots of cool things happening right now :cool:

I totally agree with what is stated above. I've done events on west and east coast and plan to with the midwest guys in 08. Cris and those that started the club did so because they have a burning passion for the early 911, for hotrod type improvements to cars and for social interaction with those of similar interests. They didn't do it to keep others 'out' or because they thought they were 'better than' anyone else.

What has happened in the last 6 plus years is that the early 911 following has exploded. Cars that went for 20k back then are much more now. More people pay attention to the early 911 and yes, certain mags that carry articles on early 911's owned by members do drive interest.

If you are interested in being a member I think the biggest challenge is location. Due to guys like Curt, there are now more options to those of us who live outside of Cali. And some really great guys have stepped up and are building those regions.

It has already been said, but to make the point, being active is a big part of being a member. So make sure that you keep that in mind. But as has been also said, this forum is really not the place to learn about us, you have to come and hang out at an event.

Finally, when I started posting on this forum way back when, the way people treated each other was a lot different then it has gotten in the last few years. It seems like folks have gotten way too comfortable with insults sent from the impersonal keyboard. Just try and remember, email and blogs SUCK as a means to convey ones meaning, therefore try and think before you type. We all love these cars and spend tons of time on them, that alone should be reason enough to respect each other.

I have followed this a several other Porsche boards for many years. My question was sincere albeit nieve. I had no idea that I would create such a sh#t storm.

My son (oldschoollear) and I are avid Porsche fanatics. He just got his first one a couple of months ago. We were both at the latest Mid-Tenn fun run.

I am also a PCA member and pariticapate in DEs and autox. So, while I like stickers and badges, I am no poser!:D

I didn't recognize you out of your carSmileWavy . I had met your dad earlier at the DE event in Memphis. He had told me then about your car and that you were gonna try to make the next drive. You were right behind me and then you were gone. Kinda freaked me out:eek: I didn't realize who you were untill we stopped for lunch and I asked your dad to introduce you to me and he told me about you getting sick. We really enjoyed having you and your dad with us as well as all of the other guys from Nashville.

Still working on a plan for the 72. I've been given several options from tame to extreme. I'm leaning toward a 2.7 RS MFI motor for a little extra scoot! Hope to get PWR working on it next week. The slope is very slippery. While you have the motor out why not rebuild the suspension...and while the suspension is out why not send it to the body shop for a complete glass out respray... and while the interior is out why not replace with a light weight interior and vintage sport seats...and.....I'm stopping with the motor for now...

Hopefully I'll have the car back by xmas. In the mean time I'll have to make due with the Carrera S.

To each his own...(edit) I will say that I am still in contact with R Gruppe members, and there are nice guys among the gruppe. I just wasn't a good fit. Perhaps it's my blue collar & redneck attitude...old fashioned values.

(edit again)...you see, I'm a 60+ year old guy...self employed my entire working life. I didn't take orders well. I thought it was a car club, not the military. All those "you must" and "no exceptions" email orders just rubbed me the wrong way. Long before getting those emails I had figured out that there is only one thing in this life that I "must do"...that is, to die. I don't have to own a porsche, I don't have to attend a minimum of events, I don't have to do a damned thing these guys gave me "orders" for.

So, rather than click my heels, stand at attention and salute, I decided to resign...then I decided to sell the car. I'm done.

I don't have a dog in this fight, as I am happy to be a "member" of the SCWDP for now!:eek::p I will have to say though that after reading through the "show us your early narrow body hot rod" thread, I am sick with envy to have an early car.:D

I just wanted to speak up and say that Rich and Rick are both stand up guys. Rick, it was nice meeting you and your son and d-in-law last week. Next month's MTFR(#8) is going to be the weekend trip to Eureka Springs, AR for Porsche Palooza. Make sure you register with them and get your hotel reservations as they are filling up quickly. Just google Porsche Palooza and you will find their website, or email me and I will send it to you. I hope you both can join us for that run... should be a great time. It is November 9-11. I would like to leave Friday the 9th, probably around noonish. There are supposed to be a 100+ cars there this year.

That's the funniest part of this thread so far.

The easiest and best way is just to show up. Hang out and drive with local members. Get to know them, and give them time to get to know you. Not much more to it than that. Of course, if there are no local members, that makes that pretty tough. In the same vein, if there are no local members, there is nothing to be gained by joining. This is not the PCA; we do not have faceless, anonymous members that never show up for, or participate, in anything. This is a very small club comprised of friends who know each other, help each other, and spend time with each other. And drive the piss out of these old cars. This is all about active participation. We're not looking for names just to fill a roster; that's what the PCA is for. Why would anyone want to join a small driving club if they either cannot (for whatever reason) or will not (again, for whatever reason) participate? There are absolutely no benefits outside of participation. None.

So, Rsquared, if there are members in your area, or if you don't mind driving a ways to meet up with them, just get ahold of them. It looks like Curt is helping you with that. When you do hook up with them, you will find them friendly and welcoming. Drive with them a bit; see if you actually want to continue to do so. If so, and you have a good time with them, everything just kind of falls into place from there. It's all pretty darned informal. The key is actually meeting and getting to know the locals; that's all. Pretty straight forward.
