7 yr old suspended for drawing a gun
No, he didn't draw a gun from a holster. He drew it on a piece of paper. I don't have young children, but has it come to this? I'm astonished that a kid can get punished this severely for drawing a gun. And it was supposed to be only a water pistol.
Heaven forbid if they have an assignment for drawing scenes from the revolutionary or civil wars. The entire school may get suspended. Do the guys here with young kids know this rules exists in some schools? Can they draw tanks, battleships, sling shots, or bows/arrows? I supposed knives are way out of bounds too? Just really weird.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071020/ap_on_re_us/gun_drawing_suspension_1;_ylt=Al7e2bJX1REQn4DBuMj5 6xgE1vAI |

our society is morphing again
pre WW1 post WW1 Pre WW2 post WW2 / cold war post cold war is still in act 1.. How our social institutions and politics change will determine the future for at least 50yrs imo. Our dysfunctional public school system has not even been acknowledged for what it is by the voters. Progressives vs constitutional constructionists, aka act 1 there is a Hollywood conservative leader that just wrote a book on looking at the situation from the eyes of a movie production to get the conservative message out. Even in Hollywood the conservatives are 20% but have no venue for getting the message out. He said that progressive liberal movies are produced because they make money. This author is trying to gather the group together to share ideas etc. The teacher unions are some of the most powerful in the country. They're leaders are rock stars to many. School principals are no longer managers of their schools.

No kids here, but I'd be drawing pictures of guns, war and whatnot if (from the child's perspective on todays society) I had to wear a helmet while riding my bike that still has training wheels at age 7. It just isn't right.

Normally I'm not a big proponent of court action to right this kind of wrong. In this case, however, some one need to get sued and fired. A lot.

The local school was going to suspend our then 9 year old son for drawing a picture of a black-robed grim reaper with a knife. Then, unfortunately for the school district, I found out that a little boy in our son's class had threatened to bring in a shot-gun and kill everyone. The teacher did nothing.
I raised an unholey level of hel-l making it clear in no uncertain terms that an actual specific threat had been made and the knowledgeable teach did NOTHING yet was to see our son suspended for a random doodle on a piece of note paper. It was "explained" to me that the poor little fellow who made the threat was from a disadvantaged family and was a troubled kid. So they decided to do nothing. Basically, the school district decided that our white middle class two-parent household family could get a good bludgeoning while a child with "family problems" could get a free ride. I threatened to go to the local newspaper with the story. The school decided not to suspend my son. Good thing. Buncha pussies. Yes this is EXACTLY what our public schools have come to... angela

Yeah, but you let it go and the next thing you know he is drawing bullets for his cartoon gun! Where do we draw the line?

I don't think a day passed from 1st - 6th grade that I didn't draw tanks, airplanes, helicopters, bazookas, missiles and such.

It could easily be perceived as a threat. If my kid came home and showed me something like that I'd have a serious problem with it as well.

I drew plenty of pictures of bombing or shooting kids that called me names. I never bombed or shot anyone.

I am fairly certain that most of us drew pictures of our teachers being maimed and killed in horrible ways.
Except for that hot one in 11th grade. How come she never molested me? ![]() |

I couldn't draw worth a chit, so I shook the rope in P.E. They DID learn. I DID get whipped, but not by a classmate.

I've thought about this over a beer. Or three. Now I'm outraged. This is outrageous, I tell you...

I drew epic battles in childhood and if I had to endure longer meetings than I do now I would still be doing it today. Right now I usually only doodle small scale skirmishes...

When I went on down for the physical for the Draft...and they asked me what I'd like to do in the Army..I started jumping up and down screaming, "I want to KILL KILL KILL" I guess I was so excited that the Sergent got carried away and joined me in the chant....
Anyway now that I've gone down memory lane a bit...I would simply tell the school that my child is reacting like a normal child would when faced with so much violence and uncertainity in the world and is merely expressing his or her fears through his drawings. If the school continues to persecute my child for being normal and expressing their first amendment rights the next person the district will be talking to is my attorney.
