What will they copy next?

Have they no shame? No imagination to create? Oh wait, this is a Communist country.

Even more pathetic is the Chinese government's lack of interest in enforcing international patent/copyright laws, and the international community giving them a pass. Wouldn't want to make the world's largest emerging economy mad, now would we? Not when there's money to be made.

How is this worse than the "Ferrari" used 20 years ago on Miami Vice? During the first couple of seasons their Ferrari was a Corvette chasis with Ferrari bodywork. Or the fake 911s we make fun of on EBay all the time. Expensive cars will always be faked or imitated.

Because China has large companies dedicated to making knock-offs of patended/copyrighted products, and their government does nothing. We're not talking about a movie prop or a backyard project gone wrong, we're talking about companies that do this for profit.

What do you think would happen if a company in America started making copies of Ferraris? Or iPods?

Thats what I was thinking. There is a huge replica market here in the US. Theonly difference I see is that one is "some assembly required" and the other is "turn key".
FWIW, I still like the Miami Vice Daytona. I'd drive one as long as it didn't have any Ferrari emblems on it.

Or large US companies displaying it nationally on one of the highest rated network TV shows of its time. Knockoffs exist where there is a profit for them. It's like blaming Columbia for cocaine or Afganistan for Heroin.

This really begs the question, what is the difference between a replica and a copy? Representation? Or just waiting for the patent/copyright to expire?

The worst thing about driving a Chinese Ferrari is that an hour later you want to drive it again.

Can the general design of a car even be patented or copyrighted? I can see logos being copyrighted, or maybe even some kind of distinctive feature (like BMW's "kidney grilles"), but not so sure about the general design.

If it is, then Chrysler should sue Mercedes for their new C class!

The, they are the same car. Need I remind you that until last month, Mercedes and Chrysler were the same company.

(The R Class is the same as the Chrysler Pacifica. The 300/Charger/Magnum is built on the E-class chassis.)

LOL, they aren't the same car. The new MB C class and the Chrysler Sebring do not share a single part.

And saying MB and Chrysler were "the same company" is a bit of an overstatement. Chrysler was acquired by MB (Daimler Benz to be exact) and of course later sold by MB. Some MB parts were used on Chryslers (generally prior generation MB parts), but no Chrysler parts were used on MBs. The Chrysler acquisition had little to no effect on MB cars. Chrysler was most accurately viewed as an asset of Daimler (albeit perhaps a negative asset).

But the C class and the Sebring do look a lot alike. I think the new C is downright ugly, esp. in person (in pics it's ok).

It is funny, though, on the MB site where I saw that pic, the diehard MB fans claim those two cars "look nothing alike" and "share no similarities, other than both being silver and having wheels." LOL.

That's really funny; an unreliable car made badly.

It's a bit like a Lada. A Fiat made in Russia.

apples and oranges. Those were mockups they threw together so they could wreck one and not blow the special effects budget for the year.

Why is it exactly they don't enforce the international patent laws on China?
