Have a nice day pet peeve
This is a major pet peeve of mine. I don't know why it bugs me so much but it does.
I get the "Have a nice day" farewell from store clerks, cashiers, etc regardless of the time of day OR night. Take a look outside people! It's dark! How about trying "Have a nice evening" once in a while. |

When they start, I just put my hand up and say "Please don't address me", then walk away.

What scorches me is when I call a business and say "how are you today?" and they reply like I'm wasting there time. I like to be friendly with people first.
Then If I say , "thanks, Goodbye or even Have a nice day" and they just hang up...Ohhhhh! KT

I'm sure I've told you this before, but my Dad likes this when he comes over from the UK where store staff just seem constantly pis$$ed off with you because now you're there they have to work. He doesn't care that the US staff are not sincere and says "I'd rather be told have a nice day by someone who doesn't mean it, than pi$$ off by someone who does"

I have a favorite cutey teller at my credit union (I wave people in line past me until I can go to her window).
Invariably, when the transaction is complete she'll roll up her eyes and ask "Are we done yet?" to which I reply "Yeah, bicth. Later" which elicits a smirk of a smile from her, then I turn on my heel and leave. I'm thinking about asking her out.

Well...in their defense...when I receive a call from an overly friendly person, I automatically assume "telemarketer" and go into my "ruin telemarketer's day" mode. So, most people at businesses who answer the phone all day may be thinking the same thing.

I have had this discussion with an Aussie friend. She insists that Americans are really big fakes because of these sorts of pleasantries.
I call BS. If I say "have a nice day", I mean it. When I say "thank you", I mean it. I'm not the type to be polite just for the sake of decorum. If I think you should f-off, you going to hear it. But generally I give people the benefit of the doubt, and I do say nice things to them, even if they do not offer any in return. It makes the work a better place. Don't make me go off on some merlot inspired existential/Buddhist riff here........

Usually I will tell people "have a good one" this leaves the person able to decide what will be good for their own situation. If it is someone I care about I will usually tell them to "take care"......

I hear the 'have a good one' around here quit a bit. If my wife happens to be there, after they leave she asks how they know that information about me.
I'm in the trenches when it comes to meeting the public, I greet everyone who walks through the door. Sometimes the conversation goes much further, sometimes not. I never use 'have a nice day'. Jim

My salutations:
"Have a great morning!" or "Have a great day!" -- used before noon. "Have a great afternoon!" -- used from noon to 4:00 or so. "Have a great evening!" -- used from 4:00 or so on.

I think this clearly illustrates places I'd like to live versus places I'd never like to live. I may be a yankee, but I love visiting the South. (Wouldn't mind living there either if I could somehow do it and keep my job.)

How about the "How's it going?" I never use it, because I don't want to hear of their problems. Not because of lack of concern, but I don't want to be nosey.
When I am asked, I always respond "okay." I've been tempted to start into some story of sorrow, just to see how they respond.

I usually answer with a wink and a "I will if you will."
My pet peeve is similar. Hallways greetings that require an answer. "Hi" is good. "Good morning" is fine. "howz it going" is not okay. They don't want to know, and since we passed each other already, an answer requires us both to turn around and stop.
